Friday Night Fights 3, Round 1: Martial Artists

With great pleasure, I present Round One of Friday Night Fights 3, featuring the following fantastic fights:

As a quick review, there are eight head-to-head contests this week. You can vote once in each matchup for your favorite. The winner of that fight moves on to face the winner of the next bracket, so the first-place finisher in the Kaldath-Asder poll will meet the winner of the borntobealoser-headlessgeneral match in week 2.

Good luck to our top 16! Note that you can click on the image in the poll to see it full-size.

Character Contest 73: Virgo

This week's Character Design Challenge is a bit late according to the Zodiac calendar, but nonetheless it's time for Virgo!

Yes, your challenge for this week is to design the coolest character image possible with the theme of "Virgo". You could design something reminiscent of famous virgin warriors in history like Diana or Artemis, or you might design a spacecraft named "Virgo", or you might draw inspiration from the historic origins of the name:

In classical mythology two prominent figures associated with the constellation are Erigone and Astraea. Astraea was the Roman goddess of justice and the administration of law. Sickened by the wars of men, she was the last of the celestial beings to leave the earth for the heavens and is often depicted with the wings that allowed her angelic ascension to the stars. It is said that Zeus placed her amongst the stars as the Virgo constellation along with her scales of justice to depict the constellation Libra.

Erigone was the name by which the first century astrologer Marcus Manilius referred to the constellation. As the sign of the harvest, Virgo held strong connections with the time that grapes were gathered for the production of wine and Erigone represents an aspect of this association. She was the daughter of Icarius, who received the secret of wine making from the Wine God, Dionysius, and was murdered by peasants who believed they had been poisoned by his wine. Erigone was led to discover his body by their faithful dog and hanged herself in grief. The gods were moved to pity over the tragedy and transported the family to everlasting glory in the heavens : Icarius became BoĂśtes, Erigone became Virgo, and the dog Maera, the constellation Canis Minor.

The person with the winning entry as selected by our expert panel (i.e. me) will win their choice of a) a portrait to go in HeroMachine 3, b) an item to go in HeroMachine 3, or c) a custom black and white "Sketch of the Day" style drawing (also by me). The rules otherwise are the same as always:

  • All entries must be in JPG or PNG form (BMPs are too big), posted to a publicly accessible website (like ImageShack, PhotoBucket, the UGO Forums, whatever);
  • Entries must be made as a comment or comments to this post, containing a link directly to the image and the character name;
  • The image cannot have been used in any previous HeroMachine character design contest;
  • Please name your files as [your name]-[character name].[file extension]. So DiCicatriz, for instance, would save his "Bayou Belle" character image as DiCicatriz-BayouBelle.png.
  • Please make the link go directly to the image (like this) and not to a hosting jump page (like this). If you see "preview" or "rotate" somewhere in the link you're probably doing it wrong.
  • All entries must be in by next Monday, when I'll choose a winner.

Good luck everyone! No more than five (5) entries per person this week, folks, so make 'em count. I think this is one of the tougher signs to do, so I look forward to seeing who can nail it. Although that's probably a poor choice of words ...

Caption Contest 108 Winners

We had a lot of great entries for Caption Contest 108 (Talk Like a Pirate Day). As usual, I've gone through and picked out the ones I thought were the funniest for your enjoyment:

  • Dan Gonzalez: Whaddaya mean the Village People auditions were yesterday!?!
  • alphaalpharomeo: I have Davey Jones Locket
  • Rick: Raid! Pilfer! Makeover!
  • ams: All you can eat shrimp? Set sail to the Red Lobster, maties!!
  • Frevoli: Hand over the Black Pearl! It’d go great with my white gold earring
  • Frevoli: All me movies be rated arrrrrh!
  • Big Mac: I’ll be taking your treasure AND your booty, YARRGH!
  • Vampyrist: Flower Power, bitches.
  • The Atomic Punk: Shiver me timbers and minnie me pearls!
  • Knighthawk: I like big boats and I can not lie!
  • Rendu: Hey, everybody! It’s ‘Talk Like An Office Worker Day’ Let’s all enjoy free donuts in the break room!
  • Galactic Ketchup: Tis I, Captain John Swallow!
  • Sutter_Kaine: Arr! I be barred from coming within 20,000 leagues of an elementary school!

Out of those very strong contenders, I had to pick just one to be the overall winner. It was a tough call, but ultimately I went with ... Knighthawk!

Rendu was a razor-close finisher as well, but I just couldn't get the dialog to fit in the balloon without looking really tight.

Congratulations to Knighthawk and all the other Finalists!

Friday Night Fights 3, Play-In Round: Gadgeteer!

With great pleasure, I proudly kick off the play-in round of the third HeroMachine Friday Night Fights contest! We once again have some fantastic character portraits; I hope you enjoy seeing them as much as I did.

As a quick review, here's how all this works. You can vote for up to 16 of these entries, once per day from now until next Thursday at midnight Pacific Time. That means you could vote for your top 16 up to 7 times if you come back every day. Why? Because we want visits, that's why! Get your friends to come as well, because if there's one thing we like more than visits, it's visits from new people.

Next Friday, the top 16 vote getters will square off in a series of eight one-on-one, head-to-head matches, while the remainder will all compete all in one big group for a consolation prize.

The challenge for this edition was to come up with a team of five characters, all unified by some sort of common costume elements like the original X-Men or the Fantastic Four, so that each member stands out as an individual while also clearly belonging on the team. Each team had to have a Gadgeteer, a Mentalist, an Energy Projector, a Mentalist, and a Martial Artist. First up: Gadgeteers!

Good luck everyone! And remember -- vote early, and vote often.

META: FNF3

I'm working on getting the first "play-in" round for Friday Nights 3 assembled and posted. It's a lot of work so it might be a little later in the day, but I wanted you to know it was coming. There are some fantastic entries in there, I promise it'll be worth the wait!

Only two days left for Friday Night Fights entries!

Don't forget, you must have your Friday Night Fights entries in to me by midnight this Thursday!

Rick 'em, rack 'em,
Rock 'em, ruck 'em,
Get out there and really ... TRUCK 'em!

That was a motivational cheer, by the way. I'm wearing a mini skirt and wielding pom poms but no way am I posting a photo.

Caption Contest 108: Aaaarrrrr!

Because I wanted to give everyone considering a "Friday Nights 3" entry an extra week to work on their submissions (remember, due Thursday!), and in honor of this being "International Talk Like a Pirate Day", we're running another Caption Contest this week instead of a character design challenge.

Thus, your scurvy challenge this week, ye salty sea dog, is to come up with the best replacement dialog for this comics panel or be keel-hauled!:

I don't know what kind of ship he's on with that pink skull emblem but I feel sure we'll find out.

The best entry (as judged by yours truly) wins the author's choice of either any item they like or any portrait to be included in HeroMachine 3′s final release, or a custom black and white “Sketch of the Day” style illustration (you pick the subject, I draw it however I like).

All entries must be left as a comment (or comments) to this post. Keep ‘em clean (appropriate for a late-night broadcast TV show), but most importantly, keep ‘em funny!

This week we have a cap of no more than five (5) entries per person, so make 'em your best!

Caption Contest 107 Winner!

Wow, we had a lot of very funny entries for Caption Contest 107, thank you all for sharing your humor and wit! Here are some of the entries I thought represented the best replacement dialog for this panel:

  • ams: Objects may appear closer than they are!
  • Panner: Trapped in knife factory, send help!
  • Trekkie: Look out, there’s a knife heading towards you!
  • Gero: “What am I supposed to write here? Won’t he be dead when it hits him?”
  • McKnight57: Duck!
  • Frevoli: Iron Skull couldn’t see the point of dagger mail… then it hit him.
  • Frevoli: If undeliverable, please throw at the head of:
    Postmaster Dave
    231 CherrywoodLane
  • TopHat: Hey, could you give this knife to Daredevil for me? -Love, Bullseye
  • Sutter_Kaine: Using his uncanny reflexes, the Iron Skull manages to intercept the knife that would have otherwise missed him by several feet!
  • TheNate: EDITOR’S NOTE: Before the invention of Sticky Notes, mobsters used Stabby Notes.
  • TheNate: The mob delivers a sharply written reply.
  • the creator: ‘You have been poked’ regards, the Facebook team.
  • mashlagoo: Dear Friend, I am Prince Abdullah Saud. I have recently acquired money in the amount of $100,000,000.00 USD due to the death of my father. Because of a stipulation in his will, I need your help…
  • Bael: I was well accustomed to weapons bouncing off my head, but a note? That would have raised my eyebrows, if I had any.
  • Skybandit: “We have hostages and demand (continued on next knife)”
  • dblade: “Lucky for Iron Skull, there were a few indisputable truths in the universe: Paper covers Rock, Rock smashes Scissors, and Skull shatters Dagger.”

I thought the variety of approaches on this one was great, with some doing an "editor" style aside, others actual dialog from the character, and still others the actual text of the note. Good stuff!

I had a hard time picking a winner, so I ended up falling back on my old stand-by: Which ones made me laugh out loud the first time I read them? And the answer to that was ... Frevoli!

I counted two excellent puns and a cool new concept, "Dagger Mail". I can't wait to get my first letter. Also, ironically Frevoli's prize for his last Caption Contest win, and today is International Talk Like a Pirate Day! That's gotta be some kind of karma.

Anyway, Frevoli, let me know what you'd like for your prize, congratulations to the Finalists above, and thanks to all the others who entered but who I couldn't paste in due to space constraints. That was a fun one!

HM3: Female Profile Heads

Finishing up Kytana's contest prize, I've just added the following two female heads in profile to the Head-Female-Standard set:

Note that I've left the eyes totally blank, so you can use the separate pupils and eyeballs from the Eyes-Standard set to make her look whichever way you want.

Replacement Prizes 2 List 1

As voted on by you, the astute and powerful HeroMachine users, I am starting work on the first set of the second round of Replacment Prizes. The following contest winners' prizes are now forfeit to the larger community. Their loss is your gain!
