Caption Contest 64: Headliner!

We're going to do something a little different for this week's caption contest. Usually I put up a comic book panel with the words whited out, and you have to try to come up with the funniest or best replacement dialog. But this week, you're going to do what I do with the Daily Random Panels -- come up with the best headline to make the comic book panel below perfect:

So for instance, some possibilities I thought of for this one were "This is the worst fantasy ever!"; "How can I with all this pressure and shouting?!"; "Bad days to forget your thumbtacks"; "Bob's Last Day as the Green Masked Bulletin Poster"; etc.

The rules are simple:

  1. All entries must be left as a comment or comments to this post;
  2. Only three entries per person;
  3. Keep it appropriate for a general audience, which I usually describe as something that would pass network censors for a prime-time broadcast television program.

The winner will receive either a portrait of their head or any one item they like to be included in the HeroMachine 3 final version. You have one week, so good luck everyone!

Character Contest 20 Winner

Although it was a smaller turnout than usual (not that I blame anyone -- I certainly wouldn't want a picture of me up on the internet! -- I appreciate everyone who made an entry into our last costume contest, which asked you to put up a HeroMachine image of an actual Halloween costume. In addition to the folks who bravely posted themselves, several people put together excellent composites of other people.

PhoenixTallon posted some very nice adaptions, but my favorite was her "I Dream of Jeannie":

Character Contest 20: Costume crossover

Ordinarily I'd be hosting a Caption Contest this week, but with Halloween I just can't resist. Your challenge for the week is a little more complicated than usual, because we're going THREE DIMENSIONAL! I'm looking for the best HeroMachine recreation of an actual, real-life Halloween costume. You'll need a photo of the costume in question, and then the HeroMachine recreation/update. You could try to go for an exact duplicate, or you could take the basic idea and make it better, whichever you like, but there has to be a real costume your design's based on.

To review, here are the rules.

  • Each entry must consist of two images, one of a real-world Halloween costume, and one of your HeroMachine reinterpretation/duplication of it;
  • Both images for each entry must be posted to an online web site somewhere that I can get to (i.e. PhotoBucket, ImageShack, the UGO Forums, whatever);
  • No more than five entries per person;
  • All entries must be left as comments to this post, with links to the images in question;
  • No editing in PhotoShop or whatnot, except for basic cropping (or putting the two images into one side-by-side, that kind of thing).

The winner will be decided next Tuesday by me, Jeff Hebert, Bald Guy, and will be awarded the choice of either a portrait of their face as a line drawing or any item of their choice, to be included with the HeroMachine 3 full release.

Good luck everyone!

Character Contest 19 Winners

Without further ado, and with many thanks for all those who shared their creations as part of the event, I present the Honorable Mentions and the overall winner of Character Contest 19.

Character Contest 19: The horror … the HORROR!

The season of silly costumes, a year-round affair in these parts, has reached critical mass in the world at large with the advent of that crazy holiday, Halloween! People from all walks of life will, for just this one night, release their inner geek and dress up as everything from the classic sheet-over-the-head ghost to an AT-AT Walker from Star Wars and everything in between.

As the advance guard of the Costume Design Revolution, however, it is incumbent upon us to lead the way, to show the regular citizens of this fine world what is possible. And so your challenge this week is to create the scariest Halloween costume/monster/getup you can using any version of HeroMachine you like.

I'll grant you, people dress up as non-scary stuff all the time for Halloween, but at its core the holiday is supposed to be about being scared. You don't have to go bloody, necessarily, but Tinkerbell ain't gonna cut it. Unless she's actually cutting it, "it" being the horrified neck of one Peter Pan, Esquire, for instance.

So get busy, folks, and make with the horror!

  • You have one week, starting today and ending next Tuesday.
  • All entries must be left as links to an image or images in the comments to this post, and all images must be 100% HeroMachine-generated (any version).
  • The winner will get to choose either any item he or she wants, or their caricature, put into HeroMachine 3 for all to see and love.

Good luck everyone, I look forward to seeing what you come up with!

If you don't know how to do a screen capture, and for some reason are not happy with or can't use the "Save as JPG/PNG" button in HeroMachine 3, Hammerknight put together a how-to for you.

P.S. As a special, rare sneak preview, next week's contest is going to be you submitting a photo of you (or someone you know) in their Halloween costume, along with that same costume rendered in HeroMachine. So if you were on the fence about planning something for Halloween to wear, maybe this will be the kick in the pants you need!

Caption Contest 63 Winner

I am happy to give you the winner of Caption Contest 63 AND the choice of either a caricature or any item they want ... Bixlord!

I liked the idea of corporate villains getting socked by well-meaning but perhaps misguided consumer advocates in tights. Congratulations to Bixlord!

I also wanted to highlight the following Honorable Mention entries which I thought were outstanding:

  • Danny Beaty: Girl, where did you get those bitchin’ thigh highs?
  • johny: lets put a frown on that face!
  • TopHat: “Quit pushing! You’ll get to eat some of the villain after I’m done!”
  • Bael: Excuse Me! Coming through! Clear the men’s room! Taco Hell Emergency!!!
  • Patrick: It’s true … no matter how they look, singers always get the girl!
  • cavalier: “One way or another, I shall win the Bad Costume Contest!”
  • Frankie: “Why don’t you take this Scooby-Doo weregator ghost and chow down on some hamburgers, Jughead. Veronica’s my girl.”

Nice job and many thanks to all who entered!

HM3: Hover chair

I've just updated the Companion-Vehicles set for HeroMachine 3 with Niall Mor's prize for winning Caption Contest 60. It's in two parts, the front and the back, so you can position a figure as if it's sitting in the chair:

Thanks to Niall for picking a great item to be included! And now, on to Texas-OU and the (hopefully) complete domination of the Sooners.

Caption Contest 61 Prize

I've just posted an update to the ItemRight-Polearms set that includes Loki's prize for winning Caption Contest 61. Actually, there are TWO "rune-carved wizard staves" because I wasn't sure the first one was what he was looking for. So Loki, let me know if either of these work for you:

loki-polearms

It's a bit hard to tell, but the second two entries go together. The first has the majority of the staff one color with the globe at the end the secondary color so you can get that magical orb effect. The runes are the secondary color of the last item, the curved stone with the ties so you can attach it to another staff. That way you can have the runes "glow" a different color if you want.
