Ok guys, as with last year, it’s time for our Character Of The Year contest. The idea is very simple, I take all of the CDC winners from throughout the year and put them into a number of polls. Who goes in which polls is decided using a Random Name Selector, so I have not control over who goes where. The winners of these polls after a weeks worth of voting then get put into a final poll that will run from next Sunday until Christmas Eve, where the winner will be announced and put into the Hall Of Fame (I am aware that two of these CDC winners have already been entered into the Hall Of Fame, so obviously if they win they won’t get entered again, we’ll just go with who ever gets second place).
Anyway, without further ado, lets get started.

That’s right, singular this week. We actually had an outright winner this time…. I know, amazing isn’t it. Two people did run away with this poll from the start, between them accumulating 70% of the votes between them. But our winner was always in a clear lead and it was obvious who was going to win from when the votes started coming in. And I’m ok with that, because it gives me a chance to say something that hasn’t been said in a couple of years. And isn’t it ironic that, to round of the triumvirate of version challenges, the person who wins the HM3 challenge is none other than Zyp, for his redesign of Melmo44’s Phaeya. congratulations Zyp, please speak to dblade about your prize, and well done to everyone else who entered, not just this challenge but all three of the version challenges, it’s been great fun.

It’s funny, I always try to feature different people for CotW, just so I’m not repeating myself. However, I’m spectacularly bad at it, as I’m sure those of you who remember the original run will know. But it seems there is one person who I just can’t stop featuring, as this will be their 3rd or 4th time getting CotW.
Ok, I will say straight off, this isn’t as good as the last of Candruths works we featured on CotW, but that one was a masterpiece. But I have to feature it, simply for the same exact reason I always feature Candruths art, the flipping’ attention to detail on the shading and highlighting. If I could just draw your attention to the wrinkles around the nose and the mouth. Look at that lighting, really properly look. You have the base purple skin colour, then you have a slightly lighter violet colour, then that cream colour for highlights. Add the black shadow shading and then you have another purple to accentuate the contrast in colour (though this could be a mixture of the lighter purple and the black, but it looks to me like another colour). Most people just have base colour, highlight colour, shade colour, done. But obviously not Candruth. And then you have those eyes. Not only are they superbly creepy, but they also seem to have at least 5 different colours in there for shading and highlighting (green, cream, pink, very light purple, white and a darker purple) added onto the base colours. Honestly, Candruth does more shading on her characters eyes than I do on my whole characters. And that’s saying something. And just when I think I can stop going on about the shading, I see the neck. And the shadows on the hood, making it melt seamlessly into the background. God, so good.
Oh, and does anyone else think Star Wars when they see this picture, or is it just me?
Alright! It’s time for another Open Critique Day!
As for how this goes, you post a work of yours, finished or WIP (aka work in process, for those who are new to abbreviations), and then others give you critiques on your work.  I do not mind if you post the occasional non-HM picture or piece of writing, but keep in mind that, though there are some, not all of us here are writers or do art outside of HeroMachine. All I ask is that you only post pictures that are your own design and not any that copyrighted or based off of copyrighted characters. As for pieces of writing, I’m not sure about whether fan fiction is allowed, but for right now, just in case, don’t post fan fiction either.
Also, again, if you post a work, it is highly recommended that you also give someone else a critique.
