Open Critique Day #6

Alright! It's time for another Open Critique Day!

As for how this goes, you post a work of yours, finished or WIP (aka work in process, for those who are new to abbreviations), and then others give you critiques on your work.  I do not mind if you post the occasional non-HM picture or piece of writing, but keep in mind that, though there are some, not all of us here are writers or do art outside of HeroMachine. All I ask is that you only post pictures that are your own design and not any that copyrighted or based off of copyrighted characters. As for pieces of writing, I’m not sure about whether fan fiction is allowed, but for right now, just in case, don’t post fan fiction either.

Also, again, if you post a work, it is highly recommended that you also give someone else a critique.

I don’t believe this is a copy righted character, if it is then feel free to delete my post. I am not satanic or anything, this idea just came into my head so I thought I would try to create the character.

  2. Linea24 says:

@TOOL: Don’t worry, I did a little bit of research, and it turns out that you’re perfectly fine. As for critiques, it looks good overall, but the only thing I would do would be to change the color of the tentacles so that they don’t blend in too much with the wings.

  3. Herr D says:

Rather than supreme evil, this resembles something ‘off-off-Broadway’ from the pantheon with Vishnu and Ganesh. I mean, that pantheon has, like, 330 million gods or so.

That sort of thing is usually depicted with jeweled or gold-plated symbolic items in each hand or tentacle. Lovecraft would have something shadowy or people screaming in the background. I’m thinking he should be holding a lipstick and a crescent wrench. But that’s just me, and I don’t know what you were going for.

  4. Skoul says:

@TOOL: Creepy picture! I agree with Linea24, the tentacles do blend in slightly, also I think Earth’s water should be a shade lighter.

Without further ado, my alien head. I have uploaded 2 images, the second is cropped because I haven’t given it a body, though I don’t think it needs one. Regardless, that’s where the critiquing comes in:

I know I’m somewhat late to the party, but if there’s anyone still looking here, I’d like some critique on the work below, in particular on a few points: The pose, the belt, the insignia, the color scheme and anything else you feel like it…..

@Skoul: Love what you’ve done with it. It would be awesome to see what you can do for a body. I would maybe change that planet for something else (I was going to suggest transparent rings but I played with it and it would require very extensive work to achieve that effect)

@TOOL: I don’t think I can add to what Linea and Herr D said, they were pretty much what I’d say (and I looked before I read their comments). 😉

Thanks for the comments guys. This character is usally depicted on an amulet or in statue form. I was trying to bring it to life. From what I have seen and understand it is suppose to be part man, woman, pig, goat, demon, with a splash of oddity. Normally the wings are angelic but I wanted to go darker. Sometimes it is depected with some tpe of amulet over the stomach or a mouth in a seated position wearing like a robe or baggy pants. I found one that shown it with these long tentacles with mouiths at the end of them for its bottom half. There is a companion that is in the ballpark of that idea but I was unsure how to recreate that so I went with squid. It was hard to decide on color pallate because the statues and amulets are very bronze, metalic, or dark. If anyone would like to take a shot at their remake I can get you the code for the character. I would love to see all your ideas.

@Worf: I’d be interested in a small knife in her hand for a second strike at those who can dodge the kick.

@Skoul: Where did you get a picture of Dave? Very nice. I would suggest a bit more hardware protruding visibly.

  8. Skoul says:

@Worf : Nice Pose! The edges of the belt overlap on the thighs which doesn’t look quite right to me, maybe try re-sizing them? Also the way the insignia has been masked it looks like it has been folded between her breasts, and therefor you’re no seeing all of it. You could maybe flip the insignia to have the longer point facing down or use slightly different breasts that aren’t so pronounced. Those are the only two criticisms I have, otherwise it’s a great picture. 🙂

Here is a revised version of my picture. @Worf I’ve tried to make the planet’s rings as transparent as possible, and I’ve given it a body as per your advice.

  9. Worf says:

@Skoul: Me likey! Elegant solution to the planet problem. Also, I feel as if your alien is about to look at me in a very threatening way. Good job.
