Character Design Contest ♯139 (Colourful) Winner

Interesting result this week. Our winner was actually the one entrant I was unsure about putting on the poll and not only did they win, they dominated the poll. And it was their first entry into a contest if I’m correct. So congratulations to Tracy111 whose Blue Bell owned this weeks poll. Well done Tracy and to everyone else who entered.

Pop Quiz – Music, Music, Music!

edisonphonograph

On September 26, 1908, “The Saturday Evening Post” ran the first ad for the Edison Phonograph.

Your challenge this week is to come up with a machine, instrument, or character/creature that creates music.

There is no prize. There is no poll. The winner is chosen by me.

You only get one entry so be creative, and above all else, have fun!

All entries must be in JPG or PNG form (BMPs are too big), posted to a publicly accessible website (like the HeroMachine forums,ImageShackPhotoBucket, or whatever);

  • Entries must be made as a comment or comments to this post, containing a link directly to the image and the character name;
  • The image must be new and designed specifically for the Pop Quiz;
  • No copyrighted characters please – they will be deleted.
  • Please name your filesas [your name]-[character name].[file extension] before you upload it. So DiCicatriz, for instance, would save his “Bayou Belle” character image as DiCicatriz-BayouBelle.png.
  • Please make the link go directly to the image(like this) and not to a hosting jump page (like this). See this post on how to get the direct link for most sites.

This contest will close at 9pm Eastern on Sunday, September 27th.

Character Of The Week: Yin- Hathor

Those of you who pay close attention to the Also Awesome section of this post every week will be familiar with the name of this weeks featuree. Yin is almost always there, but has never actually had a COTW nod until now, and to be honest I couldn’t exactly explain why. It’s certainly not through lack of skills. But this week she pulled a blinder with this rendition of the Egyptian Goddess of Motherhood and the Sky. I mean just look at the shading on the dress. For once I don’t actually have words for how beautiful and natural it looks. And I adore the lintless insignia patterns Yin uses for backgrounds. It is a great signature effect and really makes her work stand out and catch the viewers eye. Then you have the actual construction of the costume. The head piece is fantastic, the dress simple and magnificently patterned and the transparent sections really add that extra something to make it even more special. And the expression, so regal. Kids, quick tip, this is how you get COTW. Do something this good. Because this is as close to perfect as you can get.

No Open Critique Day this week

I’m sorry guys, but, as it says in the title, there isn’t going to be a Open Critique Day this week. I’ve just recently had surgery, and I’m still recovering.

I should be better by next week, though.

Power User Profiles: Suleman

So, as promised, Power User Profiles are coming back for a short run. Don’t expect this to be very regular, on a weekly schedule or anything, I’ll be posting these as soon as one of the people I’ve contacted gets back to me, though I’ll try and have them up on a Tuesday like they used to be.

Anyway, this weeks featuree, what to say about him. Well, personally, I’d say he’s probably one of the most overlooked creators in the community. His work isn’t all that flashy, but his poses are always excellent, his shading atmospheric and his costumes manage to tread that oh so fine line of being visually appealing and believably functional in real life. Whether it be fantasy, oriental crime or wrestling, his work is never short of fantastic. Which isn’t bad for someone who claims they don’t know what they’re doing. So ladies and gentlemens, please welcome to the Power User club, Suleman.

Character Design Contest ♯140- Getting Emotional

Okay guys, going all kinds of throw-back here, well, for me anyway. On the suggestion of Sabrina on last weeks CDC suggestions blog post, we’re going to revisit the theme for what was my third contest in charge of the CDC’s. What I want you guys to do is create a character or abstract piece that represents an emotion. It can be any emotion, so joy, fear, anger etc. but you can only portray one per picture, unless you’re doing ambivalence, in which case, good luck.

As per usual, no limits on entries and the contest will close at midnight Saturday (blog time). Please read the contest rules before entering, have fun and good luck.

Rules for posts, contests, and challenges that I am hosting: Original characters only, no copyrighted characters, no characters based on copyrighted characters, no characters based on RPG’s or other games. The characters must be your own design and not based on any character that might be copyrighted in any way. I have the right to delete any post that I believe crosses this line without warnings. Only post characters that you have either created for this contest specifically or you know for certain have never been entered to a contest before. If you aren’t certain, don’t enter it, because I’m not going to go back through all of the contests and check.

HM3: Headbanging Good!

HM3_Items_092015

Whiz Bang presents the winning items from Poll #001. Ocean Master Helmet (well, it’s kind of masky if you ask me) and Ant Man Helmet. You can find Ocean Master in Headgear/Fantasy and the Ant Man Helmet in Headgear/Military. I also created some ears using the Ocean Master artwork. These can be found in Ears/Standard. In addition I made a bishop hat (perfect for evil priest concepts), a crown-like headpiece ( I designed this for my villain character, Sovereign), and another piece that reminds me of an eraser head (I’m sure the Machinists will find some use for it). The bishop hat and crown piece can be found in Headgear/Fantasy and the eraser/stump hat can be found in Headgear/Modern. I’ve also included the Japanese mask that I made for Weilyn. I hadn’t pointed out that this had gone live when I first uploaded it weeks ago so I included it with this post. It can be found in Headgear/Mask.
