Characters Of The Week: djuby- Opal & Lapis

Usually, when it comes to talking about djuby's work, you'd be expecting a lot of talk about costumes, right. Well this week neither of the characters featured are clothed (as far a I can tell), but it's alright because the pictures are headshots. And the reason why they're being featured is because, well, just look at that shading. The hair on Opal is beautiful and the facial shading on both (but particularly Lapis) is stunning. It shows just how much you can add to a fairly simple picture by adding a bit of well thought out shading.

Character of the Week: Candruth- Manhunter

Oh, it's Candruth again. Anyone else surprised? Nope. Me neither. And honestly, can anyone blame me for picked Candruths work when this is the quality she puts out consistently?

Character Of The Week- Anorhil

*sigh*

I thought we had quite a good run of featuring different people each week for COTW. Unfortunately, Candruth has decided to show up again, so it means back to business as it was earlier this year, because it's so hard not to pick her work when doing these posts. Her shading and use of colour are almost unequalled. This week had no shortage of excellent pictures from members of the community, but this one just stood out.

Character Of The Week: ExtremelyEPIC- Heavy Unit Turtle Shell

There were quite a few amazing pictures posted this week, but I have to give this weeks nod to ExtremelyEPIC for this masterclass on how to do atmosphere, lighting and taking constructive criticism. Originally this picture was much darker, which is a staple of EE's work, but after a number of comments point out this fact, he went back and lightened the picture and, I think we can all agree, the final version is stunning. You could imagine this being a bit of concept art from some sort of epic video game like Gears Of War. The character just exudes menace, thanks in most part to his hunched pose a glowing red eyes, which is emphasised by the stormy background and superb use of lighting. So not bad for someone who's been AWOL since March.

Character Of The Week: Vectorman316- The Judge

You know what really sets apart great pictures from good pictures?

It's what you do with the details really. For example, adding clawed nails to a set of hands that would normally have standard nails, just so it adds a bit more menace. Of you can add a bit more highlighting to an energy effect, just to make it look more natural. You could add an effect to the background so it makes it look like there's a city rising from mist or it's being viewed through frosted glass. You know, little things. The little things make a picture.

Character Of The Week: Candruth- Malai

Welp. Do I even need to explain this? It's Candruth, what do you want me to say? It's all about the shading. Because no-one shades like Candruth, no-one.

Character Of The Week: CantDraw- Demoness

CantDraw-Demoness

Ok, so I think this is the first time I've actually featured CantDraw on COTW, which is amazing. But here we go, I'm doing it this week. As I'm sure everyone is aware, CantDraw has one of the most interesting and unique visual styles of anyone in the community and this is a fantastic example. Both incredibly cartoony (looking at the, ahem, exaggerated proportions) and psuedo-realistic (LOOK AT HER FACE!!!!) complimented by one of the best shading techniques out of any 'machiner. Best bits? Err, the face, the right hand, the face, the shading, the face, the right hand and the face. Yeah, thats about right. Oh and such power in the pose. She's just like "yeah, I'm going to kill you and there's not a damn thing you can do about it. And have I mentioned how much I love her face. That expression is ice cold. It's actually the first time I've seen the chin up head used effectively in a manner that looks natural and not awkward in any way.

Do I even need to explain this one?

I didn't think so.

Character Of The Week: Anarchangel- Aerial

Ok, first things first, sorry there wasn't a COTW post last week. There wasn't a huge amount posted on the forums last week and that, coupled with a lack of time on my end, meant that I wasn't able to do one. As for this week, well, still not a huge amount in terms of stuff that was posted (so I won't be doing an Also Awesome), but I do have a bit of time, so here it is. And this week we are once again featuring Anarchangel, and, if I'm being honest, I'm a bit disappointed that I'm having to feature this on COTW rather than in the contest poll, because for whatever reason, double A hasn't entered it. No idea why. The costume is, as usual, really nicely designed, a few rough joins on some of the patterns around the neck and chest area but nothing too major. The pose really gives off a floating, free vibe, enhanced by the blowing capes. And I like the lightness of the colours as well, white and gold always work well together, especially on a character with a mystical, light style.

Character Of The Week: Stulte- The Floating Archipelago & Honu Po O Kea

There are some members of this community that only seem to have one setting, that setting being "wow". We all know that Stulte is an absolute master at world building and fantasy-realism design work and that is plain to see in the second of our two featured pictures today. But the first one. The first one. Just… The colours, the shading, the use of items, the atmosphere, just… wow is the only word I have right now. As for the second picture. Well the shading is something else. My only gripe is, how is something that big floating like that? It does not compute.
