Contest 21 Prize: Captain Thorn

Socrates and I have finalized his prize for winning Caption Contest 21. Here's the great description Socrates sent me:

As for my prize, I'd like for you to do a picture of my longtime roleplaying character Captain Thorn. He's sort of a World War One/Victorian era British adventurer, refined yet savage at the same time. I made a picture of him using heromachine which is fairly accurate which can be found at http://freewebs.com/captainthorn/captainthorn.jpg (the pants aren't really right though)... his hair is steel gray but whitening at the temples due to age, cropped short, his skin dark and sunbronzed and weathered with age, never without a five o'clock shadow and a cigar in his mouth. His clothing is basically safari gear, adventure type garb with a cowboy-style gunbelt and holster. He's roughly forty-five or so http://tristram.wikispaces.com/space/showimage/facemaker.jpg is a pretty good depiction of what he looks like. always has a sort of shiteating grin on his face.. sort of a cross between Indy, Doc Savage, and James Bond with a little Crocodile Dundee thrown in there. A shot of him firing a Webley pistol would be just great

I actually ended up doing two different versions of the illustration because I couldn't decide which I preferred. I did this one first, which I liked:

But then I decided that I really wanted him to be fighting a big cybernetic gorilla. So that's what I did:

Remember kids, and this is an important tip for any of you parents out there too, everything's better when there's a cyborg ape involved. You can write that down.

If you want to win your very own custom illustration of whatever you like, put on your thinking cap and head over to Caption Contest 23, going on now!

Caption Contest 22 Winner!

With many heartfelt thanks to the wonderful Johanna of "Comics Worth Reading", our celebrity co-host and judge, we have a winner for Caption Contest 22, and it is ... DJ!

contest22-winner.jpg

DJ wins a custom black and white illustration of whatever he or she likes (within reason)! Congratulations, and a hearty thanks to everyone who entered, particularly the judge's runner-ups/Honorable Mentions:

  • The Grizz: For the last time…I AM NOT A POKEMON!
  • Runt82: Man, this Earth-sized treadmill is tough.
  • Frankie: "I've gotta find a new exit for my Megazord."

I've noticed these three on the Honorable Mention a lot, and although The Grizz and Frankie have won in the past, I feel like Runt82 is coming on super strong. So everyone out there be on notice, you're going to have to bring your A game to beat these guys! Luckily Caption Contest 23: Maximum Haberdashery is already going on, so head on over and take a crack at winning your own prize.

Again, thanks to Johanna, who did a great job both picking the image and judging. If you're not currently a reader of "Comics Worth Reading", you should definitely check it out, the team there does a great job.

Caption Contest 23: Maximum Haberdashery!

Haven't you ever wondered what goes through the mind of one of Jack Kirby's characters as they dress up in whatever outlandish outfit Jack designed for them? Well now's your chance to find out! Come up with the best caption for the comic book panel below and, if your entry is selected, you’ll win your very own custom black and white illustration of whatever you like (within reason)!

caption23c.jpg

Be sure to note in your entry which balloon gets what dialog. For instance:

Balloon1: By Odin, the women at church this week will have to admit that my hat is best! And if not ...
Balloon2: I BLAST THEM!!

As always, the rules are simple: Only three entries per person, put your dialog in the comments to this post, and keep it relatively clean (as in, appropriate for a broadcast TV sitcom).

Good luck everyone!

Contest 20 Prize: Dr. Camelot!

Rob Rogers and I have finalized his winning prize for Caption Contest 20. He chose one of the main characters from his excellent novel, "Devil's Cape" (on sale now, go get your copy if you haven't already, it rocks!), named "Doctor Camelot":

drcamelot-web.jpg

This was a fun one to do, I don't usually have an entire novel of source material from which to draw. Rob gives great direction and feedback, too, which also makes things both easier and more fun. Hope everyone likes it!

And don't forget, you too could win your very own custom black and white illustration if your entry is selected in Caption Contest 22!

Caption Contest 22: It's Manga time!

Our celebrity judge and co-host for this week's Caption Contest is none other than Johanna Draper Carlson, of "Comics Worth Reading" fame! Many thanks to Johanna for coming up with the panel for our contest this time around; since she's been instrumental in opening my eyes to what manga (Japanese comics, basically) has to offer, I asked her to pick a good panel from that world, and boy did she deliver:

contest22b.jpg

Johanna will also help judge the winner after all the entries are in, so don't be afraid to go over to her blog and leave some nice sucking-up style comments! Flattery might not work, but then again, it might.

The rules are the same as always:

  1. Keep it clean, appropriate for a broadcast television prime-time show;
  2. Make your entry in the comments to this post;
  3. No more than three entries per person.

The funniest entry (as judged by Johanna and me) will win a free black and white custom illustration of whatever they like (within reason) by professional illustrator Jeff Hebert (that's me!). So put on that funny cap and get to work! The contest ends next Monday night / Tuesday morning.

(Note: The contest is now closed and Johanna is deciding on the winner. Check back later today for the announcement!)

Contest 19 Prize: Callavera!

We've finished the prize for Caption Contest 19, won by HeroGallery. We decided to do one of his HeroMachine creations, Callavera (seen here). The first rough "pencil" sketch looked like this:

calavera-rough.jpg

HeroGallery requested some changes, specifically "could you made him stand, and one gun is pointed at the viewer and give him an angry expretion [sic] too". So it was back to the drawing board (well, drawing mouse pad anyway) and we finally settled on this version:

It's not too late for you to win your own custom black and white illustration of whatever you like thanks to Caption Contest 21, going on now!

Caption Contest 21: Big Green Mama

It’s time once again for you to put on the Funny Cap and come up with the best caption for the comic book panel below. If your entry is selected, you’ll win your very own custom black and white illustration of whatever you like (within reason, I ain't redoing the Sistene Chapel Ceiling with super-heroes!) from professional illustrator Jeff Hebert! Here’s this week’s challenge:

As always, the rules are simple: Only three entries per person, put your dialog in the comments to this post, and keep it relatively clean (as in, appropriate for a broadcast TV sitcom).

Good luck everyone!

Contest 20 Winner!

The winner of the "EvilDM" Pulp Caption Contest is ... Rob Rogers!

caption20-winner.jpg

Honorable Mentions were:

Bixlord: Without the lamentations of the women, it’s just not the same.
HalLoweEn JacK: I’d light a match before going in there, if I were you.
Bixlord: Taking over California will be easier than I thought.
Charles Gramlich: Not having to say you’re sorry? Priceless!
Radioactive Giant Robots: Suck it, Trebeck.

Many thanks to everyone who entered, it was quite a turnout! And one more huge tip-o-the-hat to co-host/judge Jeff Mejia of EvilDM and the "Legends of Steel" role playing game. Great job, Jeff, and thanks for playing along!

Contest 14 Prize: Fortress

Jester and I completed his prize for winning Caption Contest 14! Here is the description he sent me:

He's about ten feet tall, and has a slightly broader chest and shoulders than the Heromachine image. The helmet he's wearing was surprisingly close to my initial vision of him, but it would be nice if you could shave off that... tower-looking thing on the top, remove the spikes and shorten the "tusks" coming off of his cheeks. Also, I'd like to change the spikes on the shoulderpads into studs, and get rid of the chain connecting them.

I'd like the insignia tweaked abit if possible; it would be really neat if you could make it look like the design was etched into his chestplate, rather than having a picture of a castle on his chest.

His right gauntlet is a little tricky... His giant ball-and-chain mace-thing is actually attached to it, and it contains a forearm-mounted mechanism that can "reel" the chain back in if his whirls the chain or tosses the ball. So his right gauntlet should be kind of bulky and mechanical, if you can kind of picture what I'm trying to describe.

As for his pose... It would be neat if he was sort of sideways to the veiwer, his shoulder thrown back as if he was going to swing foward and stab someone with the giant spikes on his sheild (which, coincidentally, is strapped on to his armored left arm). The "mace's" chain should kind of be dangling and twirling, as if he had just released the mechanism in his gauntlet, allowing the chain to drop. He should aslo be gripping a length of the chain, to keep the mace from hitting the floor. Her sould be glaring at the veiwer, his eyes (which are dark; ignore the white-eye look in the HM image) barely visible beyond the eye-holes in his helmet.

And here's the HeroMachine character he created as a guide:

Finally, after the jump is the illustration we settled on as his prize.

Caption Contest 20: Pulp Edition

This week's Caption Contest is co-sponsored by "The EvilDM" (warning: some content not quite safe for work), Jeff Mejia, creator of the fantastic sword & sorcery / movie pulp adventure RPG system "Legends of Steel". He selected the following Conan panel as our jumping-off point this week. So after you come up with the funniest caption for it, thereby winning your own custom black and white illustration of whatever you like, head on over to Jeff's place and check out his great gaming commentary.

caption20.jpg

As always, here's how the contest works. Put your best funny caption that would fill the word balloon in the comments below, up to a maximum of three entries. Keep it relatively clean (i.e. suitable for a prime-time broadcast TV sitcom, only funnier). And that's about it! Here's an example:

Maybe next time I'll just fill out the comment card, but that meal really sucked ...

Good luck everyone, make the Two Jeffs (and Robert E. Howard!) proud.
