Character Contest 6 Winner

Many thanks to everyone who submitted one or more of the 70+ entries to Character Contest 6: Animalia! Before I announce the overall winner, I wanted to highlight those I thought were particularly deserving of an Honorable Mention for one reason or another.

HM3: Two prize items

With thanks to Brambles and Mark Shute, I am happy to announce that I've just uploaded a version of ItemRightBladesTwo for the HeroMachine 3 Alpha that includes their contest winning prizes:

Mark's stone dagger can be used either as a regular knife or, with a rotated handle, an axe head (that's what the extra bindings are for). And those of you who have wanted a scabbard for a while have Brambles to thank for at least this first one. The cavalry sword he submitted was pretty cool looking, I think both it and Mark's Neolithic weapon are fine additions.

Thanks to both of them and congratulations once more! If you've won a contest but haven't sent me your request, make sure you do so at some point.

Character Contest 6: Animalia

Your character creation challenge for this week is going to be a bit more focused than last time: you must create a character (or characters) based on the animal kingdom. That might mean a super chimpanzee, or it might mean The Battling Beaver super-hero, or it might be a space-zombie-fighting intergalactic robot horse, or it might be your take on the Beastmaster, or a fantasy ranger with his wolf companion, or or or anything else you can think of, so long as it relates in some way to an animal. The rules are the same as last time:

  • No editing in anything but HeroMachine (except for basic cropping or sticking a label on it or something);
  • Post a link to your image in the comments;
  • You must use a version of HeroMachine to create your image.

The winner will get to choose either one item or a caricature of their head to go in the HeroMachine 3 final version so they can serve as a model for countless legions of creative people the world over! The contest runs from now until next Tuesday, at which time a winner will be announced.

Good luck everyone, I look forward to seeing what you come up with!

Character Contest 5 Winners

After the jump I have the winners of Character Design Contest 5: Fantasy Edition. That's right, I said winnerS, plural; there were so many great entries (42 different individuals contributed 186 separate illustrations, which is mind-blowing) that I couldn't decide on just one. So I'll be showing you what I consider to be the best examples from five different categories, each of which will win either one item of their choice or a caricature of their head to be included in the HeroMachine 3 program!

Many thanks to everyone who entered; as always, if you don't see one of yours called out here, it's due to lack of space and not a lack of ability or creativity on your part. There's only so much room, after all!

And now, your winners (WARNING: Lots of very large images to follow, users with slow connections beware!).

HM3: More ranged items

I've just made the updated "ItemRightRanged" set for the HM3 Alpha available, which includes a lot of the suggestions from Solander and others, primarily in the "Thrown Items" sort of category. It also includes the prize for our first Character Contest winner, Imp, who requested:

Okay, how about this: a bow that looks like a bat - the arms would be the 'wings', with a kind of webbed look - sort of like a more intricate, stylized Batman symbol.

It's the last item in the set, and here's what the lineart looks like:

batbow2

Congratulations to Imp, and I should get to those other prizes ... soon. Yeah.

Character Contest 5: Fantasy

Although most people think "super-heroes" when they hear "HeroMachine", the world of imagination is much broader than that. Your challenge for this week, therefore, is to design a character from the worlds of sword & sorcery -- barbarians, rangers, halflings, ogres, trolls, dragons, wizards, you name it. You might even do a fantasy-themed super-hero, of course, the sky's the limit, so long as it is in some way S&S related. The rules as always are simple:

  1. You can use any version of HeroMachine you like;
  2. No editing in Photoshop or other image-manipluation programs;
  3. You must leave a link to an image of your creation in the comments to this post, preferably on a site that doesn't require registration.

The winning entry will get to select either one item to be included in the final version of HeroMachine 3, or they can choose to have an illustration of their face included with the program for all the world to use as their own heroic template.

Good luck everyone! I'll judge a winner next Tuesday, the day after I turn 40. So I might need bifocals by then to see all the entries, but by golly-by-gum I'll get it done!

Character Contest 4 Results and Winner

Many thanks to the many entries for the "Angels and Demons" character creation contest! We had 74 entries, which is fantastic, and as in the first three contests the quality was quite high. After the jump I'll display the ones I thought were particularly deserving of mention, and then finally the overall winner. If you don't see yours here it's not that it wasn't good, it's just that I only have so much space. Thank you very much for entering, everyone!

Character Contest 4: Angels and Demons

With thanks to DJ for the idea, our next character creation contest tips the hat to Ron Howard's new film "Angels and Demons". And to honor the author of the original novel, Dan Brown, if you write a story to go along with your image you must make it as full of turgid prose and idiotic plotting as possible.

Sorry, sometimes that English degree can't be restrained.

Your entry must in some way be related to angels or demons, but don't think that means only the big feathery winged dudes or giant red monsters with horns and bat-limbs. Be creative, and above all, make a cool looking character.

The rules are simple:

  1. Make a character related to the contest theme;
  2. Leave a link to the character in the comments to this post, on a site that doesn't require a login to view (although the UGO Forums are fine);
  3. Any version of HeroMachine is fine;
  4. No PhotoShopping.

That's pretty much it! The winner will get to choose either one item to be included in HeroMachine 3, or they can have a caricature of their face added to the program for all eternity.

Good luck everyone!

Character Contest 3: Robot Winner

First, I'm sorry to be so late posting this. It's been such a long day that it's actually tomorrow already. Or something. I hate time travel.

Second, THANK YOU for all the great entries! With almost 100 comments, that was one of the best responses ever, and the quality of the entries was very, very high. If you don't see yours listed as a finalist, that's probably just because I ran out of space, because I could easily have included a dozen more really stellar examples.

Anyway, on with your finalists!

Character contest 3: You, Robot

Your character creation challenge for this week is to craft the best, coolest, most innovative robot the world has ever seen! You might opt for a rolling centauroid tank of mechanized death, or a chipper helper kitchenbot, or a deranged hippie cyborg, but whatever you choose has to somehow fit the concept of "robot". The winner will get to choose either any one item they wish or a caricature of their head, to be immortalized forever in HeroMachine 3.

The rules are simple:

  1. You must use HeroMachine 3 Alpha to create your entry. No other versions of the program, and no Photoshopping, just pure unadulterated HM3 output.
  2. All entries must be left in the comments of this post, as a link to the actual image file for your creation. You can use any image hosting location you like so long as it does not require an account to view.
  3. You can enter as many times as you like but each creation must not have been used as an entry for another contest before.
  4. No previous entries -- it has to be a new creation.

That's it! Good luck everyone; judging will be next Tuesday, May 19.
