Caption Contest 65 Winner!

I am pleased to give you the winner of Caption Contest 65, Gero!

contest65-winner

This is much funnier if you're steeped enough in Bulletlore to know that Bulletgirl IS the police chief's daughter. I laughed out loud reading it, though, so nice job Gero! I also got a kick out of these Honorable Mention entries:

Matt:

  • BM: Bulletgirl, have you noticed that we have huge seashells on our hea–
  • BG: Shhhhh! I think I can hear the ocean.

Firecracker:

  • BM: I’m telling you Bulletgirl … Rock beats Booger everytime!
  • BG: NoseBullets!

NGpm:

  • BM: The line must be drawn here!
  • BG: Why not over there?

There weren't as many entries this time, so I think I need to work harder to find some really bizarre, fun panel, like the one with the guy spraying machine gun fire while explosions came out of his butt. Good times.

Thanks to those who did take the time to submit their funny lines! Gero wins either a portrait of himself or any item he chooses for the final HM3 version, so congratulations again.

Captioning skills in the wild

Finally, all the practice you've had coming up with funny captions here at HeroMachine will pay off in the real world! Well, the real world of the funny pages, anyway.

One of my favorite comic strips, "Non-Sequitur" by Wiley Miller, is running a contest for the funniest verbiage to go on the sign in this scene (click for a larger view):

I'm not sure what you win beyond wealth and fame beyond the dreams of avarice, but it seemed like something you all would both enjoy and excel at. So go forth and be witty!

FNF1: Don’t forget to stuff the ballot box

Just a reminder, you can vote for your favorites in "Friday Night Fights" once per day, every day, until Friday, so if the ones you like best aren't doing as well as you would like, head on over and vote again, and tell your friends to do the same!

Friday Night Fights, Round 1!

I am pleased as punch and giddy as a schoolgirl to announce the first round of the first ever HeroMachine Friday Night Fights! Below you will find eight head-to-head matchups featuring never-before-seen titans of the Super Hero genre. Choose which one you like best in each match to decide which creator moves on to Round 2 next Friday!

You have until midnight, Thursday, November 26 to cast your vote, and to exhort your friends to do the same. All Round 1 Winners will get their choice of either a portrait of themselves, or any item they like, to be included with HeroMachine 3's final release.

Good luck, everyone, and spread the word far and wide throughout the Internets to come and vote! Click on any of the actual images to see them in their larger size.

Finally, some housekeeping details ...

  • I had eighteen actual entrants, so since I hadn't announced any sort of selection criteria ahead of time, I had to unfortunately go with the first sixteen submitted. The remaining two will be guaranteed as pot in the next competition, assuming we do this again.
  • Matchups were decided in inverse submission order, so the first one submitted got matched up with the last one, the second submission got matched up with the second-to-last one, etc.
  • All of these details are definitely open for discussion and change next time around, assuming we do this again.
  • I also want to figure out something to do with all of the submissions that won't have the chance to be seen because the creators got knocked out in later rounds, so any ideas on that are very much welcome.

Once again, good luck to all, and thanks very much for your extraordinary creativity!

Caption Contest 65: Bulletcharades

Come up with the best replacement dialog for this Bulletman panel and you'll win either a caricature of your gorgeous mug OR an item of your choice to be included in the final HeroMachine 3 version!

The rules are simple:

  • Leave your entry or entries in the comments to this post;
  • No more than three entries per person;
  • Keep it clean (appropriate for late-night broadcast TV).

That's even easier than falling down! I'll announce the winner next Tuesday. Make sure in your entry you indicate who is saying what, like so:

Bulletman: I think I might've crushed Bulletroach!
Bulletgirl: No, I think I snorted him in this nostril -- gross!

Good luck!

Character Contest 21 Winner

Lots of great entries this week, thanks to everyone who entered! I've selected a few after the jump to feature as Honorable Mentions before getting to the overall winner, but I think the level of performance this week across the board was very high. Just to recap, this was the contest where you had to produce an illustration based on a randomly generated character name.

Friday Night Fights Deadline!

Remember, your deadline for e-mailing me your four entries for the Friday Night Fights Tournament is tomorrow, Wednesday, November 18, so if you haven't done so already, be sure to get your submissions in!

Friday Night Fights

Comic books are all about two sides fighting it out, and that kind of head-to-head battle has been sorely lacking here at HeroMachine.com. But no more! Because starting this week you'll have your chance to duke it out with each other in our new contest feature, "Friday Night Fights"!

Here's how it works. Starting next Friday, November 20, sixteen challengers will square off in a set of eight head-to-head battles. The highest vote-getter in each match will move on to the next round, again vying against one competitor for top vote-getting honors. We'll go four total rounds, going from sixteen challengers to eight, to four, and then to the finals matching the two bracket winners against each other:

fnf-bracket-blank
  • To enter, create one and only one image for each weekly theme -- super-hero, fantasy, sci-fi, and open (meaning it can be whatever you like) -- and email the four images (or a link to them) to Jeff Hebert at afdstudios@gmail.com by Wednesday, November 18!. Make sure I know which image is for which week and remember to email them, do not post them in the comments!;
  • None of the submitted characters can have been submitted to a contest on HeroMachine.com before; you can only enter one set of characters, so choose carefully!
  • If there are more than sixteen people who wish to enter, I will pick what I think are the strongest sixteen for the contest;
  • When your character's match is open, tell your friends to come and vote vote vote! Each person can only vote once per day, but can vote every day of the week if they're so inclined;
  • Each match will last for one week, with the winner being the top vote-getter of the two as of that Friday;
  • The winner of each match will move on to the winner of the match from the appropriate bracket game;
  • The final four will get to choose either a portrait of themselves or an item of their choice to be included in the final HeroMachine 3 program. The overall runner-up will receive a custom black and white character portrait of whatever they like (within reason), and the overall winner will receive a custom color character portrait of whatever they like (again, within reason).

I would like to thank my buddy John for coming up with this idea in the first place, and then further helping me refine it. Thank you Mr. Hartwell!

I'd also like to tip the hat to Bahlactus for starting the original comic-book Friday Night Fights. They're very different from this one, but any time you have super-hero types duking it out online, I think you need to warm the cockles of your heart (wherever those are) with thoughts of him.

Good luck, everyone who decides to enter!

Character Contest 21: Randomawesity

Random is not just a by-word here at HeroMachine Global Headquarters, it's a way of life. To honor that commitment, your challenge this week is to design a character from the name given you by the "Ultimate Game Name Generator" . You can try multiple times for a good name, but you have to use one given by them.

I of course have no way to detect cheating so we will be operating under the confines of the Honor System. Cheaters will be beaten with a wet noodle til collapse. Of the cheater, not the noodle because come on, how long would that take?

So, on to our rules!

  • New characters only, not one you have laying around that you think will definitely win.
  • Character must be built to fit with the name generated by the "Ultimate Game Name Generator", and the name must be provided in the post.
  • All entries must be made as comments to this post, between now and next Tuesday, each comment containing a link to an image of the character (or multiple links to your multiple characters) hosted on a publicly accessible web site like ImageShack, the UGO Forums, PhotoBucket, or whatever.

That's it! No limit on the number of entries this week, so let 'em rip. It would also be fun to see in your post which settings were used to generate the name, although that's not a requirement.

Whoever has the best entry as judged by the capricious whim of Jeff Hebert will win either a portrait of their head or any item they choose, to be included in the final HeroMachine 3 program.

Good luck everyone!

Caption Contest 64 Winner

Thanks to everyone who entered "Caption" Contest 64. To review, this one was a bit different, you had to do what I do with the Daily Random Panels and come up with a funny headline for the panel in question:

greenmask-3-1940-getitup

The following Honorable Mentions did it particularly well:

  • Danny Beaty: How can I when you’re pointing a loaded gun at me!
  • Tim: Three little words to make a conversation awkward.
  • Hammerknight: You know the Economy is bad when heroes read for parts in porn movies.
  • the creator: why employers cancel casual fridays
  • Bael: I’ve heard of shotgun weddings, but this is getting ridiculous.
  • PhoenixTalion: Meanwhile, at the Corleone Sperm Bank…
  • Montana Player: Inner monolouges gone wrong.

Which leaves our winner, who I think not only nailed the entire concept of what the Headlines are supposed to be, and not only perfectly captured the essence of this incredibly random panel, but also made me laugh right out loud ...

TheNate: Study: 99 Percent of Superheroes Not Bullet-Proof

Well done, Nate and all the Honorable Mentions! He'll get to choose either a portrait of himself or any item he likes for inclusion in the final HeroMachine 3 program.

We'll have a normal Character Contest coming up in a bit. Thanks again to everyone who took the time to enter!
