With great pleasure, I present Round Two of Friday Night Fights 3, featuring the following fantastic fights:

As a quick review, there are four head-to-head contests this week. You can vote once in each matchup for your favorite. The winner of that fight moves on to face the winner of the next bracket, so the first-place finisher in the Asder-headlessgeneral poll will meet the winner of the Martian Blue -PapaKrok match in week 3.

Good luck to our Elite Eight! Note that you can click on the image in the poll to see it full-size, and that once again results will be hidden until the polls close next Friday at 1 a.m. Mountain Time.

Friday Night Fights 3: Consolation Round 1

As you can see, there are some fantastic Martial Artists whose teams unfortunately did not make it into the top 16. But never fear, you can still see and vote for your favorites! No stories in the consolation rounds due to time and space constraints, but the images speak for themselves.

Good luck everyone! You can vote for your top five, but only once. Click on an image to see it at its largest size.

Friday Night Fights 3, Round 1: Martial Artists

With great pleasure, I present Round One of Friday Night Fights 3, featuring the following fantastic fights:

As a quick review, there are eight head-to-head contests this week. You can vote once in each matchup for your favorite. The winner of that fight moves on to face the winner of the next bracket, so the first-place finisher in the Kaldath-Asder poll will meet the winner of the borntobealoser-headlessgeneral match in week 2.

Good luck to our top 16! Note that you can click on the image in the poll to see it full-size.

Friday Night Fights 3, Play-In Round: Gadgeteer!

With great pleasure, I proudly kick off the play-in round of the third HeroMachine Friday Night Fights contest! We once again have some fantastic character portraits; I hope you enjoy seeing them as much as I did.

As a quick review, here's how all this works. You can vote for up to 16 of these entries, once per day from now until next Thursday at midnight Pacific Time. That means you could vote for your top 16 up to 7 times if you come back every day. Why? Because we want visits, that's why! Get your friends to come as well, because if there's one thing we like more than visits, it's visits from new people.

Next Friday, the top 16 vote getters will square off in a series of eight one-on-one, head-to-head matches, while the remainder will all compete all in one big group for a consolation prize.

The challenge for this edition was to come up with a team of five characters, all unified by some sort of common costume elements like the original X-Men or the Fantastic Four, so that each member stands out as an individual while also clearly belonging on the team. Each team had to have a Gadgeteer, a Mentalist, an Energy Projector, a Mentalist, and a Martial Artist. First up: Gadgeteers!

Good luck everyone! And remember -- vote early, and vote often.

META: FNF3

I'm working on getting the first "play-in" round for Friday Nights 3 assembled and posted. It's a lot of work so it might be a little later in the day, but I wanted you to know it was coming. There are some fantastic entries in there, I promise it'll be worth the wait!

Only two days left for Friday Night Fights entries!

Don't forget, you must have your Friday Night Fights entries in to me by midnight this Thursday!

Rick 'em, rack 'em,
Rock 'em, ruck 'em,
Get out there and really ... TRUCK 'em!

That was a motivational cheer, by the way. I'm wearing a mini skirt and wielding pom poms but no way am I posting a photo.

Son of Son of Friday Night Fights!

Remember those triplets you imagined dating all at the same time, and how awesome that was? Or how about that triple-scoop sundae at the ice cream shop -- awesome, right? Good things come in threes, my friends, which makes this announcement even more fantastic:

Friday Night Fights 3 has arrived!

That's right, the time has come again for an all-out, knock-down, drag-out fight pitting your creativity directly against other HeroMachine faithful in a week-to-week slugfest.

Here's how it works.

You have two weeks to come up with five HeroMachine creations. Starting on Friday, September 23, I will post all of the "Play In" entries in one big cage-match poll. On Friday, September 30, the top 16 vote getters will face off in a series of head-to-head matchups in traditional tournament bracket fashion. On Friday, November October 7, the eight winners of each bracket will face off in another round of head-to-head matchups, and so on until we have one overall winner.

Everyone has a shot at getting into the tournament. Who actually does will be decided by the community at large, removing me as the gatekeeper.

Which brings us to the subject of "Theme". Your challenge in this Friday Night Fights is simple:

Create a Classic Five-Member Super Team With Unified Costume Designs

The concept here is that you're assembling a super team long the lines of the original "X-Men" or the "Domino Dynamo Five", but who should share some sort of identifying team identity. Maybe they all have the same colors, or share a logo on the belt or chest, or have some sort of common fashion design like a high collar. Something so that when you look at them in a group, you can clearly tell they're all on a team and not just super-powered people who happened to be caught standing next to each other.

In terms of the team members, they should fit into the following five broad character archetypes, all of which must be present on your team. I'll use the X-Men as examples.

  1. Gadgeteer (Forge, for example);
  2. Martial Artist (Beast, for example);
  3. Energy Blaster (Cyclops or Gambit, for example);
  4. Mentalist (Jean Grey or Professor X, for example);
  5. Brick (Colossus, for example).

That's also the order the contest will go in -- Gadgeteer is the play-in round entrant, followed in order by the rest, one per week.

Here are the rules:

  • By the close of business on Thursday, September 22, you must provide to me via email (afdstudios@gmail.com) five character images created via HeroMachine 3, that meet the following criteria. Note that your entry must include all five characters; incomplete character sets will be disqualified and will not be eligible for entry later on.
    1. Characters must include a Gadgeteer; a Martial Artist; an Energy Blaster; a Mentalist; and a Brick;
    2. Images must be in JPG or PNG format;
    3. No outside manipulation by any image editor other than HeroMachine 3 except for basic cropping;
    4. Each submission must also include a brief description of the team name and concept the characters appear in, and a brief bio of each character.
    5. Please name the files with yourname-archetype-charactername.jpg/png. For example, Kaldath's Brick might be "kaldath-brick-Basalt.png". That just helps ensure that I get the right characters in the right week for the right person.
  • On Friday, September 23, all qualified entries of the Gadgeteer archetype will be posted on HeroMachine.com in a single poll.
  • On Friday, September 30, the top 16 vote-getters in the Gadgeteer poll will face off in a series of head-to-head match-ups featuring the Martial Artist entries, with the #1 vote getter being matched against the #16 vote getter, #2 going against #15, and so on.
  • On Friday, November October 7, the eight winners of each Martial Artist contest will again face off in a series of head-to-head match-ups, this time featuring their Energy Blaster entries. Brackets will not be re-seeded at this time; we're going with a traditional bracket set-up this time around.

    The eight entrants who did not advance in the tournament will also have their Energy Blaster entries featured in an all-in cage match, with the winner receiving their choice of any HeroMachine 3 item they like.

  • On Friday, November October 14, the four winners of each Energy Blaster match-up will face off again in a series of head-to-head contests, this time featuring their Mentalist entries. Brackets will again be re-seeded according to overall vote totals from the previous week.

    The twelve entrants who did not advance in the tournament will also have their Mentalist entries featured in an all-in cage match, with the winner receiving their choice of any HeroMachine 3 item they like.

  • Finally, on Friday, November October 21, the last two contestants standing will clash with their Brick characters, with the top vote getting as of Friday, November October 28 being the overall victor, joining the previous FNF winners Kaldath and Imp in the Ring of Honor, and receiving a custom color character sketch of whatever they like (within reason!) by Jeff Hebert. The runner-up will receive a custom black and white character sketch.

    The fourteen entrants who did not advance in the tournament will also have their Brick entries featured in an all-in cage match, with the winner receiving their choice of any HeroMachine 3 item they like.

Hopefully that makes sense. To clarify a bit, here is the bracket, along with each week's character (not including the "Gadgeteer" play-in round):

If you have questions, please speak up in the comments. And good luck!

FHF2 Runner Up Prize

DiCicatriz and I have finished his prize for coming in second overall in the last Friday Night Fights. Here's the character description and visual I was sent:

FNF2 Consolation Prize 1

So, I owe AJW (the winner of the first Friday Night Fights 2 Consolation Prize) an apology. First, it's taken me a really long time to do his prize. Second, he hasn't gotten to approve it yet.

The reason is, of course, that I have a bad habit of making stuff up as I go along. In this case, I never really defined what a "Sketch of the Day" sort of prize -- which is what AJW chose -- would involve. In my mind I meant it as more of a "Draw Hulk smashing a tank" kind of a thing, and not a custom character sketch. Usually sketches of characters you make up are reserved as Grand Prizes. But I never said that, so he asked me to draw his own creation, specifically this guy:

But this left me in a bit of a pickle. How could I differentiate "custom character illustration" from "a Sketch of the Day" style drawing, so I retained some value to the Grand Prize?

What I finally decided to do was to compromise.

Usually with a full on character sketch type of prize I am in close contact with the winner, getting approval on at least one rough draft before doing more complete versions, then getting approval before calling it all "done". This lets the winner have a lot of control over exactly how the character looks, what they're doing, how they're dressed, background elements, etc.

Instead, I'm defining the SOD style drawing as "Jeff gets to draw it however he wants and you have to live with it." Which is why I owe AJW an apology, because I didn't tell him any of this ahead of time, on account of I just decided it about an hour ago.

So AJW, here's your prize, and since I didn't give you any warning, if you want to substitute an HM3 item instead, that's fine, just let me know. But, I hope you like it anyway!
