Poll Position: The villain’s the thing

Last week we took a look at who your favorite comic book super-hero is, someone who may or may not be considered "the greatest" by some segment of fandom, but who nonetheless holds the premier spot in your heart. Shockingly, Batman won.

This week I want to ask you the same question, but about villains:

{democracy:179}

Remember, this isn't about who the baddest of the bad-asses is or who the greatest villain EVAR is -- it's about your personal favorite, the one who you maybe like against all odds and even knowing maybe it's kind of stupid. But that's your guy! Last week the ones you all added were mostly very good, so I'll once again leave that option open this week. I appreciate in advance your continued self-editing!

Discussion to follow ...

Character Contest 62: Fantasy Warrior

Normally we'd be having a caption contest this week, but I need to add the HeroMachine 2 list of "sample characters" into the HeroMachine 3 Templates, and I want you all to be the ones to design those instead of me. Here's how the list looks in HM2:

So this week, your challenge is to tackle the first of those categories, the Fantasy Warrior. Here's how the male version looked:

I'll be picking two winners from the submissions, one male and one female. The winners will need to send me the text string for their characters so I can include them in the HM3 Templates, whereupon they'll be available for everyone to load up "live", as it were. So if you're not comfortable having your creation permanently featured in that way, then you should avoid submitting anything this week.

Note that you still own the character concept and copyright, I just have the right to show it within the confines of the HeroMachine.

You don't have to (or even want to, necessarily) recreate this exact look. Your goal is to come up with the coolest, best-looking template that people can use as a starting point for making their own "Fantasy Warrior", something that a beginner could load up and learn from. To that end you're probably going to have to keep these a lot simpler than you're used to, because a new person trying to figure out why and how you've used a head to substitute for a leg isn't going to cut it.

I'll ask that you use only the first, "Standard" male or female body in the default pose. Try to avoid using the "multiples" setting if at all possible (clearly, with things like ears you're not going to be able to do so).

Good luck! You don't have to post your text strings yet, I'll only ask the winners for that.

The rest is the same as usual -- no limit on entries, link directly to your image, contest ends next Monday, etc. etc.

Character Contest 61 Winners?

First, thanks to everyone who entered Character Contest 61. We had some fabulous images, and I sincerely appreciate your willingness to share your creativity with everyone.

Second, I had a very tough time deciding on the final winner this week. I'll go into the reasons at the end of the post, but suffice it to say that literally as I am typing this, I still haven't decided. Before I do, I thought I'd just post all of the Finalists, and then make my decision after seeing them all on the page at the same time.

Sharing Day, nerd rage edition

I need a break from Open Critique Days (they'll return next week), but in the meantime I thought it would be fun to have another Sharing Day! We've talked before about geek moments that got you sad or weepy, but today I wanted to talk about nerd-dom's dark underbelly: rage.

Here’s the deal:

You can ask me any question you like about whatever you like, which I will answer either completely truthfully or not at all (in which case you can ask something else). I say that because, come on, there are some things no one should have to know.

But you can only do so if you answer the following question about yourself (note that you don't have to ask me anything, if you'd rather not, but I'd still be interested in your answer):

What's the angriest you've gotten over a piece of geekery, whether it be an RPG session, computer game, movie, novel, or what have you?

Here's my answer for that one:

I think I've mentioned this before, but to this day I still get angry over "Superman III". It was such a desecration of an institution I love that I could feel my face getting flush, my hands clenching into fists, and an uncontrollable urge to find the producers and punch them in the face. Non-geeky friends sometimes ask me why I'm not planning on seeing a given super-hero movie, and "Superman III" is why. When you love something so much, seeing it done poorly is much more painful than just sitting through a random bad movie.

I'm getting pissed just thinking about it, almost thirty years later! What an awful, putrid, offensive train-wreck of a movie. I think the entire Superman movie franchise still hasn't overcome the unholy stench of that film splashed all over the character. Bastards.

Now it’s your turn -- let the stories of anger spill forth!
