Kaldath’s Corner: Duane Metal – Learning Japanese With Babymetal

Last week I was laid up in bed with both a very bad cold and some physical injuries which left me very bored! Of course when bored like that I did what I normal do and turned to the internet for entertainment and I stumbled upon a youtube channel that intrigued me. You See I am a huge fan of the Japanese Kawaii Metal group Babymetal, and I also have a desire to learn the Japanese language and this Channel hit on both those desires within me. The Channel name is Duane Metal and he breaks down the lyrics of Babymetal songs in order to teach your the Japanese Language.

*****

Now This channel is not going to teach your fluent Japanese but it is certainly a fun way to get your feet wet and it also helped me understand the lyrics to my favorite Groups songs better! A win, win in my book. So if you are interested in learning Japanese, like Babymetal or both I suggest you give this guy a shot!

Character Design Contest ♯135- Modern Gods

So guys, this week I want you to do a modern take on a God from some form of Mythology. This can take the form of doing a superhero version a-la Marvel’s Thor or doing an everyday version, I don’t much mind which. If you can think of some other way of modernising mythological deities then I’ll be interested to see it, so don’t go asking “is this ok”. Just go with it. Most of you can tell ancient from modern right?

Of course there are some stipulations. 1. No Greek/ Roman Gods. They are obvious, cliche and I plan to do a contest on them at some point in the near future. 2. No Gods from any current major world religions. We don’t want to offend anyone do we, even if offence isn’t intended.

As per usual, no limits on entries and the contest will close at midnight Saturday (blog time). Please read the contest rules before entering, have fun and good luck.

Rules for posts, contests, and challenges that I am hosting: Original characters only, no copyrighted characters, no characters based on copyrighted characters, no characters based on RPG’s or other games. The characters must be your own design and not based on any character that might be copyrighted in any way. I have the right to delete any post that I believe crosses this line without warnings. Only post characters that you have either created for this contest specifically or you know for certain have never been entered to a contest before. If you aren’t certain, don’t enter it, because I’m not going to go back through all of the contests and check.

Pop Quiz Winner!

First of all, I have to apologize for the lapse in the Pop Quizzes so soon after they were relaunched. Like any good teacher, when summer came I ran for the hills; unfortunately the hills I ran to had very sketchy satellite internet, so getting online to do anything was pretty much hit and miss. Next week’s quiz is already in the pipe, so you can expect them on a more regular basis now that fall is approaching.

Anywho…

There were three entries for this week’s quiz…well technically three and a half as dreadyacht did not include a link with his entry.

bluntobject-screamingmimi

First we had Blunt Object’s Screaming Mini/Tamora.

Great detail here. The layers of the dress are very well done, as is the complexity of the bodice/corset. Also the attention to detail in the background is great. The only part of it I would question is that the quiz asked for a modern day version of the character, and this is decidedly period. Still…great work.

Next we had Vampyrist’s Iago.

Vampyrist-HonestIago

Love the character’s description, and the whole duality vibe. The costume is very well done; nice colour contrast with the black, modern, and I really like the chest logo; hard to make the letter “I” interesting, but he did it.

And last, but certainly never least, Nug’s Mark Antony.

This is a stunning portrait. The breastplate details are awesome, and the shading and layered belts are a nice touch. Like Blunt Object though, this is much more a portrait of Mark Antony than it is a modern take on the character. Very well done though.

And so the winner this week is Vampyrist. Please join me in congratulating the winner, and thanks to all who entered…and almost entered.

See you next Saturday!

Character Design Contest ♯134 (Itemised) Poll

[polldaddy poll=”9028046″]

Character Design Contest ♯133 (Great Intelligence) Winner

Well, hiding the poll result seems to have worked. This weeks poll had almost double the votes of last weeks and the top three were separated by less than 15 votes, so it wasn’t a run away victory either. I wouldn’t say that it threw up any real surprises either, because the two pictures I thought would win were the top 2, all be it in reverse order of how I expected them to finish. But anyway, I’m rambling. This weeks winner was Cliff for his entry, Dr Mental. Congrats Cliff and well done to all our other entries.

Pop Quiz – To Be, Or Not To Be…A Hero Or A Villain?

MACBETH

MACBETH

On August 15th, 1057 – Macbeth, the King of Scotland, was killed by the son of King Duncan.

Your Pop Quiz challenge this time around is to choose one of Shakespeare’s classic characters and re-imagine them as a modern day superhero or villain. Add a brief (brief!) description of their powers, or let the image stand on its’ own.

There is no prize. There is no poll. The winner is chosen by me.

You only get one entry so be creative, and above all else, have fun!

All entries must be in JPG or PNG form (BMPs are too big), posted to a publicly accessible website (like the HeroMachine forums,ImageShackPhotoBucket, or whatever);

  • Entries must be made as a comment or comments to this post, containing a link directly to the image and the character name;
  • The image must be new and designed specifically for the Pop Quiz;
  • No copyrighted characters please – they will be deleted.
  • Please name your filesas [your name]-[character name].[file extension] before you upload it. So DiCicatriz, for instance, would save his “Bayou Belle” character image as DiCicatriz-BayouBelle.png.
  • Please make the link go directly to the image(like this) and not to a hosting jump page (like this). See this post on how to get the direct link for most sites.

This contest will close at 6pm Eastern on Sunday, August 16th.

HM3: One for the road…

Had another item lying around – put it in the ‘machine. You’ll find it under “Headgear/Modern”. Moar (damn thats contagious) to come… 😉

Character Of The Week: AMS- Mirage

Ok, first things first, sorry there wasn’t a COTW up last Friday. I’d had a very busy end to the week and I just forgot. Stuff happens sometimes unfortunately, but don’t worry I won’t make a habit of it. Anyway, to make up for it, have some AMSing art. Why? Because he’s the best. Always was, probably always will be. Flash fact. Oh and anyone who says that this face isn’t one of the most beautiful they’ve seen done in heromachine needs to go replace their eyes because they are obviously broken. Same goes for the costume.

Gallery: does anyone really need a link to this anymore?
