Ok, so we’re back to having less than 100 vote turn outs are we? Great (sarcasm). But one good thing is that this weeks poll was insanely tight. I mean, second place was 3 votes off first, with third being only one point behind second and fifth only being sixteen votes behind first. So no runaway winner this week (for most of the week it was practically a three way tie for the win, which would have been quite something). But the person who did eventually come out on top was DiCicatriz for his interpretation of Xochipilli from Aztec mythology. Congrats DiCi and well done to everyone who entered.

Pop Quiz – Pretty Woman

On this day in 1964, Roy Orbison released his hit song “Pretty Woman”.

Your Pop Quiz challenge this time around is to create an image of a pretty woman…walking down the street…in 1964.

There is no prize. There is no poll. The winner is chosen by me.

You only get one entry so be creative, and above all else, have fun!

All entries must be in JPG or PNG form (BMPs are too big), posted to a publicly accessible website (like the HeroMachine forums, ImageShack, PhotoBucket, or whatever);

Entries must be made as a comment or comments to this post, containing a link directly to the image and the character name;
The image must be new and designed specifically for the Pop Quiz;
No copyrighted characters please – they will be deleted.
Please name your filesas [your name]-[character name].[file extension] before you upload it. So DiCicatriz, for instance, would save his “Bayou Belle” character image as DiCicatriz-BayouBelle.png.
Please make the link go directly to the image(like this) and not to a hosting jump page (like this). See this post on how to get the direct link for most sites.

Character Of The Week: Vampyrist- The Orion

You know, I say time and time again that I can never tell exactly how much work Vampyrist puts into his shading because it all just looks so natural and seamless. Well this one is much the same, mostly helped by the fact that a huge chunk of the shading here is so stunning you aren’t paying much attention to the rest. Vampyrist is a master of glow effects and in terms of energy effects I’d say he’s probably the best there is. Just look at the fore-arms here and tell me I’m wrong. And there’s excellent use of items, male-alternate arms used to create a rougher skin texture really adds to the character. So, yeah, pretty impressed by this one.

Pop Quiz – Winner!

Very happy to say we got seven entries this week! Well done all! Sadly, due to a wonky link, I was unable to view EW44’s entry, so we are left with six pieces.

First up, Blunt Object’s Cheetah Shadow which features a very cool costume design and a great colour combination.

Next is Vampyrist’s Flaming Mask; well thought out costume and interpretation of the flaming mask feature.

Ruffblade’s Diamond Flame is very nicely highlighted and the diamond hand and forearm are standouts. Has a real Golden Age feel.

Professor Ice by lordgrimm has a real Silver Age look to it, and the helmet, neck and chest pieces are very cool.

Dreadyacht’s The Time Hourglass is wonderfully quirky, and I love the way his look is cobbled together.

And Herr D’s Skeleton Orchid battling a feline onslaught is imaginative, light hearted and the composition is great!

And the winner this week is…

Roughblade for Diamond Flame. There is something about this, perhaps the retro feel of the character, that had me going back for a second and third look. And while the costume itself is quite simple, it is nicely realized and contrasts the work on the “diamond” areas in a very interesting way.

Character Design Contest ♯136- Winging It

Anyway, basically the idea here is you create a character that has wings. It’s that simple. Doesn’t have to be a humanoid character mind you, but it has to have wings. (Quick tip, there’s a pegasus in the companions section that has some really nice wings, so take a look at what masking you can do with them if you feel so inclined as to not use any of the backplane wings). Oh and the wings don’t have to be your standard angel configuration either (from the shoulder blades).

Have fun, and if you get stuck, just wing it…

As per usual, no limits on entries and the contest will close at midnight Saturday (blog time). Please read the contest rules before entering, have fun and good luck.

Rules for posts, contests, and challenges that I am hosting: Original characters only, no copyrighted characters, no characters based on copyrighted characters, no characters based on RPG’s or other games. Character Design Contest ♯134 (Itemised) Winner

Having a hidden result seems to still be working for the voting turn out. And this week was a blinder. Two people ran away with it from the start (and when I say ran away with it, the person who came second got 20 more votes than third, fourth and fifth combined) and eventually finished with only 3 votes separating them. And surprisingly, it wasn’t the guy who created the items used in this contest that won. It was someone who, to the best of my knowledge, hasn’t won a CDC before. That person being Ubiquitous Pixel, who won with his Refulgent Beetle. So congrats UP and well done to everyone who entered.

Character Of The Week: Ubiquitous Pixel- The Villain

You know, it’s very hard to write this post sometimes, because you end up repeating yourself a lot. In the case of this weeks pick, there are a few flaws (not shading the shoes, wonky eyes, oddly positioned swords) which are of set by some excellent bits (posing decisions like the slight tilt of the head, the torn clothing, the shading) to make a picture, which whilst not perfect, is certainly good enough to be at the top of this weeks list.
