Hammerknight did a ton of work, putting together a “basics” guide on how to use HeroMachine 3 for the beginner. I’m going to break this up into several weeks, starting with a brief tour of the controls.
Thanks Hammerknight!

I’ve been working on the backlog of contest prizes for the last week or so, and have a couple that I completed but forgot to post about. So here goes! These items are all now available in the HeroMachine 3 Alpha.
First, MartianBlue’s great concept for a dragon helm, located in Headgear-Standard (Character Contest 34 – Cavalier!):

SpiderCow2010 requested a “generic city skyline” for the Background-Sky set for Character Contest 31 – Weapon:

I never heard back from TopHat about approving his prize for Caption Contest 70, so I am unilaterally declaring it done! For the life of me, I can’t remember why I have the first glove you see but regardless, it’s in now. Bonus! These are both in GloveLeft/Right-Standard:

Finally, Meg wanted a Kalidah from the “Wizard of Oz” books for her Caption Contest 35 victory, now in Companions-Standard:

For the next couple of days I will continue to work on prizes while Mark is fleshing out the Rifles set, and then I’ll have to move on to the Mech Edition.
Congratulations again to all the winners, and thanks as well for coming up with these neat prize ideas in the first place, then waiting so patiently for me to get to them.

While rifling through old directories on the hard drive for a separate UGO request, I realized I have an awful lot of old drawings in Flash that could be used in HeroMachine 3. So I put together a “Companions-Humanoids” set for you:

I would imagine some of these can have other items applied to them for further customization, or you can just leave them as-is. For instance, with just a little positioning and scaling and layering you could do this “Charlie’s Angels” remix:

Some of these are prizes from back when you got a custom illustration; if one is yours and you don’t want it in HM3, just let me know.

With profound thanks to Mark Shute, I’m happy to announce that his ItemRight-Rifles set is now live in HeroMachine 3 and ready for outfitting your various dinosaur marines. Woot! More to come in this set, but we didn’t want to limit you unduly with the contest this week. Please do not make requests for Rifles yet, Mark wants a separate thread for that so he can keep track of it, once he’s all done with the ones he’s already got plans for.
Also, I’ve been working on prizes for past contests and have uploaded several, including the following:

At PsyckoSama’s request, I have updated the HeroMachine 3 Alpha to show the hex value for a color swatch when moused over. I also made the box selectable, so after you click the color, you can highlight and copy the hex value in the name box, then paste it into the Custom Color hex box as a base for starting your new color. I’m not sure how helpful this is to most people, but it was easy enough to do and might help alleviate the pain for those who find the color swatch box hard to use for whatever reason.

I’ve just posted 30 new items into the “ItemRight-Miscellaneous” set, bringing the total to 84. Here’s a quick peek at most of them:

Not shown are a spray paint can, a Bible, a nasty-looking grimoire, a blank furled flag, a blank open flag, and a round bomb with fuse.
Hope you like ’em! If there’s something egregious you see wrong or missing, let me know.
Two fairly large non-HM3 projects have come up with UGO, so it may be two weeks or so before I work on new items. I have someone else working on them in the meantime, though, and if he wants I may post a thread for requests.

I’ve just updated the HeroMachine 3 Alpha with the first set of ItemRight-Miscellaneous items, comprising all (I think) of the Expansion and default HM2.5 Miscellaneous items. Most of them have been redrawn, a few are ports from existing sets (cigarette, cigar, yield sign, etc.), but all are now available for your character creation enjoyment. Here are a few of the new options:

Now that I have converted all of the existing items, I’ll start working on your suggestions in that last thread. Thanks for those by the way, there are some really good ones! The set currently has 54 items in it, and I’d anticipate adding another 30 or so. I’ll start working on those this afternoon.
Let me know any problems you find with these and I’ll get on ’em. I know there are some patterning issues where the pattern fills odd spaces, but I haven’t been able to fix it yet.

OK, I am finally settled in Colorado, and although my internet access situation is still in flux (meaning, it sucks but I am working on it), I have the computer and tablet set up and have started drawing items for the ItemRight-Miscellaneous set. Please let me know in the comments specific items or types of items you would like to see, keeping in mind that I am going through the HM2 Miscellaneous set and the Expansion to port the relevant objects over.
Thanks in advance for your ideas! As usual, requests with links to specific images are the most helpful.

I’ve just posted eight new Tops-MaleFantasyArmor items to the HeroMachine 3 set:

I had planned to do more on these, but the file’s already the fifth largest out of everything so far, behind only the BodyAlternate, Fonts, Companions, Auras, and Floors, and I am reluctant to balloon this thing up too much. I feel like the major sorts of armor are pretty well represented at this point — lots of plate and leather, and a fair amount of “other”, and while more is better, I think it’s probably enough. I am bored with drawing them, frankly, and I haven’t seen anything in the reference suggestions so far that screamed that it just HAD to go in.
So, barring anything huge you feel like is missing, I’m going to move on starting next week, once I’m all the way moved to Colorado. I’m open to suggestions as to what the next set ought to be. So far “rifles” has gotten a lot of push, so that’s the leader at this point. If you would rather see something else first, by all means pipe up in the comments.
I haven’t been pushing the items very hard for the last month or so, and I apologize for that. Once I’m settled in at the new place, I want to make item generation once again the top priority, and try for another massive, sustained push for a couple of months to really flesh things out.
