Poll Position: Unsuperman

One of the more irritating customs of the comics genre is that nothing is permanent. If your favorite character or supporting cast member dies, just wait a few issues and he or she will be back, one way or another. They play the same trick with powers, taking them away and adding them over and over again, so if you follow a character long enough you end up in a constant fugue state of deja-vu, knowing you've seen that story arc before.

That remains true even for the Big Guy himself, Superman, who's been through the death-no powers-new powers-back to the old powers loop plenty of times, particularly in the recent past. But I got to wondering what it would be like in a fantasy fantasy world where Superman permanently had one of his major powers deleted:

SOD.199 – Henchman

Caption Contest 80

A little different direction this week, but if you can come up with the best, funniest dialog in this Archie panel, you'll win your choice of any item or portrait to be included in HeroMachine 3's full release:

The rules are simple:

  • Your entry or entries must be left in a comment (or comments) to this post;
  • Keep it clean, appropriate for late-night broadcast television;
  • Get your entry in by next Monday, when I will pick the finalists for everyone to vote on.

That's it! So put on your Jughead-style thinking cap and let the jokes fly! No limit on entries this week, but please be a good self-editor and don't post everything that crosses your mind -- only put up the good ones!

SOD.198 – Weighty matters

An epic fail weekend as I did not post a Sketch of the Day on either Saturday or Sunday. But, better late than never -- here's the one for Saturday.

If you couldn't tell, it's Friar Tuck sitting on a Sheriff soldier.

Character Contest 39 Dinomarine Team!

I could not have been more pleased with the excellent turnout for the "Dinomarines" contest, you all really outdid yourselves. And I appreciate Jack Zegler reminding me of one of my favorite Calvin & Hobbes panels, proving some ideas are timeless:

One of the challenges when I came up with this idea was that I didn't have any particular origin or overall theme in mind for just what in the heck a "Dinomarine" was. It was immensely gratifying, therefore, to see a number of great ideas along those lines, but one in particular stood out and I think should be the "official" backstory to our team. It's from Galactic Ketchup and explains who these guys are and why they exist:

HM3 Prize Items

I've been working on the backlog of contest prizes for the last week or so, and have a couple that I completed but forgot to post about. So here goes! These items are all now available in the HeroMachine 3 Alpha.

First, MartianBlue's great concept for a dragon helm, located in Headgear-Standard (Character Contest 34 - Cavalier!):

SpiderCow2010 requested a "generic city skyline" for the Background-Sky set for Character Contest 31 - Weapon:

I never heard back from TopHat about approving his prize for Caption Contest 70, so I am unilaterally declaring it done! For the life of me, I can't remember why I have the first glove you see but regardless, it's in now. Bonus! These are both in GloveLeft/Right-Standard:

Finally, Meg wanted a Kalidah from the "Wizard of Oz" books for her Caption Contest 35 victory, now in Companions-Standard:

For the next couple of days I will continue to work on prizes while Mark is fleshing out the Rifles set, and then I'll have to move on to the Mech Edition.

Congratulations again to all the winners, and thanks as well for coming up with these neat prize ideas in the first place, then waiting so patiently for me to get to them.

Caption Contest 79 Winner!

Caption Contest 79 was won by one vote, and the winner is ... Jack Zegler!

Jack wins his choice of either an item or a portrait to be included in HeroMachine 3. Congratulations!

For the curious, the runner-up by one vote was the also very funny SteveM:

DinoMarine finalists coming up later today, and another Caption Contest as well. Thanks for playing along, everyone!

"Despicable Me" review

Short Version: A thoroughly enjoyable, light, animated summer family story that doesn't break any new ground, but does provide an amusing hour and a half of harmless diversion.

Long(er) Version (spoilers ahead!): Continue reading
