Ninjas vs. Vampires. Need I say more?

Somehow my cinematic radar completely failed to register this film, which I feel certain is destined to be a classic:

Finally a movie that gets at some of the hard questions in life! If George Clooney had turned into either a ninja or a vampire in "Descendants" I could see how he'd be nominated for an Academy Award. After all, if movies can't make us think, then what good are they?

Which is where you come in to help solve this epic dilemma that has stumped philosophers throughout the ages. Which is it, and why?

No, not that! Anything but THAT!

Character Contest 86: Better get me a bucket

I'm envious of all the great entries in our last contest so I'm going to be a glutton and combine the last two Seven Deadly Sins into one. You know the drill by now -- create something cool using the concepts of gluttony or envy. You might do a green-eyed temptress or a huge fat ogre or Jabba the Hutt getting eaten by a green-eyed temptress. The sky's the limit! Then we don't ever have to do these again.

The rules are the same as usual:

  • All entries must be in JPG or PNG form (BMPs are too big), posted to a publicly accessible website (like ImageShack, PhotoBucket, the UGO Forums, whatever);
  • Entries must be made as a comment or comments to this post, containing a link directly to the image and the character name;
  • The image cannot have been used in any previous HeroMachine character design contest;
  • Please name your files as [your name]-[character name].[file extension]. So DiCicatriz, for instance, would save his "Bayou Belle" character image as DiCicatriz-BayouBelle.png.
  • Please make the link go directly to the image (like this) and not to a hosting jump page (like this). If you see "preview" or "rotate" somewhere in the link you're probably doing it wrong.
  • All entries must be in by next Monday, when I'll choose a winner.

The person with the winning entry as selected by our expert panel (i.e. me) will win their choice of a) a portrait to go in HeroMachine 3, b) an item to go in HeroMachine 3, or c) a custom black and white "Sketch of the Day" style drawing (also by me).

No limit again this week, knock yourselves out.

Good luck, everyone!

Character Contest 85 Finalists!

Although I'd prefer to do the old-style, all in-line images for our Character Contest 84 Finalists with commentary for each, the constraints of the day job mean I have to keep doing these galleries. I hope you'll take the time to click through these wonderful Finalists to get a sense for how awesome they are.

Without further ado, here are your Finalists from Atomic Punk, Barbario, BekK22, Cliff, Dangerfish, Diazmydiaz, Felipe S. Card, Gendonesia, Headlessgeneral, Jack Zelger, Jessica, Joel, Kaldath, Kaylin88100, Kingslaughter, MaDPac, Marquis Samedi (times three!), Myro, Papa Krok, Rhinoman, Roccopi Cuccurullo, Skybandit, Tarkabarka, TOOL, Vampyrist, and Wrinkley Walrus.

As for our winner, I had a very tough time making a decision. From Jack Zelger's Western-flavored mood piece with the great environment to Skybandit's hilarious Dwarf Vader to Rhinoman's delightfully proportioned Tinker to Papa Krok's always awesome work on Mage Mech to Myro's militant Fairy to Gendonesia's great elfin sniper (great background/rooftop on that one) to many more, I had an embarrassment of riches.

But I have to pick one and only one as the overall champion. So this week I went with ... Marquis Samedi's Mechadragon:

I love the Trekkie-style robot treatment, done beautifully here with a crazy mix of items. The anatomy looks very convincing and the energy effect totally works. The grayscale-and-green color treatment pops off the page and gives the whole composition a lot of oomph. I thought this was among the best thematic treatments of the contest concept and was a beautiful illustration in its own right.

So congratulations to Marquis Samedi and many, many thanks not only to our other outstanding Finalists but to everyone who entered for sharing with us your creativity and courage.

META: Oops, I broke it again

My apologies, but when I put in the new Google Ads banner and the Hall of Fame "featured character" graphic, I apparently broke the site by forgetting to put a closing anchor tag in the link.

It should be working fine now.

Sharing Day, Being Kind Edition

Being invulnerable or super fast or hyper-intelligent or shooting laser beams out of your eyes makes being a super hero a lot easier. But we all have more commonplace heroes in our lives who have come through us in all kinds of ways. So this week's Sharing Day topic is:

What is the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?

If you like, in return for answering my question to you, you may ask a question of me on any topic and I'll do my best to answer honestly and completely. Just leave your reply (and question, if any) as a comment. The goal is to learn a little more about our community and to put some positive vibes out there on this Spring Break-like Friday!

As for me and my answer to this question ... On a professional level, I would have to say the distinction goes to the Chief Editor at UGO, Chris, who allowed me to take control of HeroMachine back from them so the community of creators -- all of you out there -- could continue using it and sharing your imaginations. I still can't quite believe the generosity of spirit and dedication to the highest ideals of the geek community that took. Thanks, Chris, you are the man.

I look forward to hearing from you about the acts of kindess you've experiences in your life, personally or professionally!

I guess being shot in the head IS pretty bad …

Stuffing the bunny, if you know what I mean

Have you ever been a stuffed bunny out on a date when suddenly you realize your companion is a brain-lusting zombie? I think we all have, because in addition to the horrors of dating many of us started our latest Choose Your Own Adventure last week with "Zombocalypse Now"!

When last we left our intrepid Velveteen Lothario, we were deciding whether to try and stick it out with our date or flee to the bathroom. In the finest Lone Wolf tradition, we cut and run:

Ah, the age-old CYOA conundrum, whether to flee for help or stay and fight. Luckily we don't have an irritating "Try and dodge the oncoming biker truck" skill and you haven't had to rely on your friendly neighborhood blogger to roll any dice. It's just pure intellectual brainpower ... oh crap. We're hosed.

Have at it, my little duckies, make your choice and defend yourself in the comments.

I wonder what horny stuffed bunnies shout as they charge into battle with the undead?

On purpose?!
