Overdoing A Good Idea Much?

So, I’m now officially done with the whole “cinematic universe” thing. When Marvel started it nearly a decade ago, it was fresh and exciting. DC got in on the act because the two companies always copy each others ideas and if the Avengers can do it, why can’t the Justice League. But now, ladies and gentlemen, things have gone too far.

I have just found out that there are two new cinematic universes. The first is the Universal Monsters cinematic universe, which started with 2014’s Dracula Untold and is set to continue with next years Mummy reboot starring everyones absolute favourite Scientologist nut job, Tom Cruise. The series is going to include all of the classic Hammer Horror monsters, Dracula, The Mummy, Frankenstien, The Wolf Man, Creature From The Black Lagoon and it just sounds oh so meh because all the movies are going to take themselves way too seriously and have terrible scripts because that’s what happens when you take classic horror icons and put them into modern films (see 1999’s The Mummy and it’s sequel or Hugh Jackman’s Van Helsing).

Next up is even worse news. Hanna-freaking-Barbera are getting into the act. HANNA-BARBERA of all people are planning to launch their own cinematic universe. It’s going to be cartoon based thankfully, but that’s it’s only redeeming feature. The series is going to start with S.C.O.O.B (which makes me angry to type) which is a relaunch of Scooby-Doo. WHAT IS WITH THAT TITLE??? Are they trying to be cool and edgy or something, because it’s not working. And can someone please tell me why they are doing this. The last time Scooby-Doo was either good or relevant was prior to the introduction of Scrappy-Doo back in the 70’s. The series with Scrappy were terrible, What’s New Scooby-Doo was alright but had lost a lot of the charm and the last series was an abomination, trying to force a relationship between Velma and Shaggy that was seriously cringe-worthy. It doesn’t seem like Hanna-Barbera know how to make a good cartoon anymore. The new film is apparently going to see the gang working for a larger organisation, which gives them some proper reason to go around solving mysteries I guess, but sounds way too Totally Spies for my liking. If you want to know what other icons of your childhood they’re going to ruin, at the moment I believe it’s Yogi Bear, Top Cat and Dick Dastardly.  Which makes me sad.

Ok, rant over. Back to your regularly scheduled Friday.

JR out.

The List: Characters I’d Most Like To See In The Marvel Cinematic Universe

Hi guys, JR here.

Since last weeks worst superhero origins list got a good response, I’m going to start doing a list series  on Tuesdays. I may also try and get another weekly blog post going, but that’s still a W.I.P at the moment. But anyway, this week I’m going to list the 10 comic book characters I’d most like to see appear in an upcoming Marvel movie, why I’d like to see them and how likely it is that we will see them, as well as 5 that I wouldn’t and why.

See you after the jump.

Pop Quiz Winner!

Four great entries this week.

Cliff_PopQuiz_TriplePlay_Rocket_zpsyjygfyli Cliff’came up with some very creative uses for the three items.

Drinkfluid-NoveltyClock_zpsq9cnwxpa Drinkfluid’s clock made great use of the three items with just a few additional pieces.

HerrD-WhenDaveDroveTheHovercraftThruTheCafe_zpsib8fmhrq HerrD came up with a whimsical take on the old bull in a china shop – but in this case it was a hovercraft in a bake shop.

Worf-Warior WomanWorf’s creative masking and item use was very inventive. .

Please join me in congratulating Worf as this week’s winner. The masking of the drum was a real surprise. Great job.

I will post the link to your prize as a message on this page later this week.

See you Saturday!

Friday Night Fights: Qualifying Round- Modern

Hey guys, JR here.

As we got exactly 8 entries, I decided to add an entry of my own so we can do a qualifying round, because it’d suck if everyone did four entries and only three ended up being used.

So, the way this works: all of the first round entries are in a single poll. You can vote for your four favourites each day. The poll will close next Thursday and then the person with the least votes will be eliminated. The remaining eight move on to the next round.

Good luck everyone. Let the fights begin.

EDIT: I’ve added the entries in a large size after the jump. Probably should have done that to begin with, but hey, at least it’s still day 1 right.

Top 5 Stupidest Superhero Origins

Every good superhero needs a good origin story. Batman’s parents where killed in front of him, so he decides to fight crime in his city. Captain America isn’t able to join the US military to fight in WW2 so volunteers for an experiment to turn him into a super-soldier and goes on to fight for truth, justice and the American way. And Thor fights crime because…

Well you can’t have them all.

But some superhero origins just can’t avoid being bad. The original Flash gets his powers by inhaling “hard water vapours” (isn’t hard water basically ice?) and the original Human Torch is actually a robot (negating the Human part of his name). And the less said about how half of the Fantastic Four shouldn’t have actually been anywhere near that spaceship (one being unqualified and the other still being in college) the better. But there are some that are just plain terrible. And here’s 5 of them.

Kaldath’s Corner: The Hamster himself on becoming the Joker!

Greetings Fellow Machiners!

Welcome to another addition of Kaldath’s Corner. This week I stumbled across a bit of video on youtube I thought I’d share with you all for your entertainment. Now this isn’t new as it was originally posted something like 4 or 5 years ago and many of you may have seen it already like I already had, but I felt it worth another watch. With that being said I present to you a little history on Mark Hamill obtaining the roll to voice the Joker on Batman: TAS as present by the Hamster himself!

Character Design Challenge #172- Fairy Tales

Ok guys, for this weeks challenge I want you to redesign a character from a Fairy Tale. Now, if you aren’t sure if a certain story counts as a fairy tale, there is a list here which you can use for reference- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fairy_tales, however please avoid any stories that are listed here as having a publication date of 1945 or later (because these may still be in copyright even if the tales themselves are older. But really, I’m sure you all know what count as fairy tales, Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, The Pied Piper Of Hamlin, all that sort of stuff.

As per usual, no limits on entries this week and the contest will close at midnight Saturday (blog time). Please read the contest rules before entering, have fun and good luck.
