We have a fair number of folks knowledgeable about ancient mythology 'round this here blog, so I thought it might be interesting to see what you'd think about this question of comics brought to life:
You can look up more information about these various groups of gods on Wikipedia or this nifty site called "Godchecker.com". My thoughts, such as they are, after the jump. Also, some of these are still (more or less) active in the world today, with actual followers and everything -- I certainly mean no disrespect to anyone out there who believes the gods of the given pantheon already really exist. I am referring instead to them as they might play out in a comic-book, super-hero sense, and not in any way to disparage how they are actively worshiped today.

The character design contest for this week is a bit more involved than usual, but here goes.
Your challenge is to build a character in any HeroMachine version that would fit into the category of either "Hunted" or "Hunter". At the end of the week, I'll pick an equal number of superior designs from each category to go into a poll. Whichever group gets the most overall votes at the end of a week will be the winner, giving each of the finalists their choice of either any item or their own portrait to go into the HeroMachine 3 final version. The member of that group who gets the most votes will instead receive a custom black and white character sketch of whatever they like (within reason).
Here in bullet form are the rules:
Next Monday, I will post a poll containing the same number of finalists from each group, and you'll be able to vote for as many as you want. The "team" with the most overall votes will win for each contributor an item or portrait to go into HeroMachine 3, except for the overall vote winner, who will get a free custom black and white character portrait;
Hope that makes sense! You can do characters from fantasy, sci-fi, super-heroes, cartoons, whatever you want. I do prefer that

Thank you to everyone who entered Caption Contest 69, there were some really great submissions. I've selected the six I thought were funniest (and which fit in that balloon), put them into the image, and set up a poll so you can vote for the ones you think are best. The winner will be the one with the most votes come next Monday.
Good luck to the six Finalists!

The winner of Character Contest 26: Golden Oldies is ... Jake and his Minuteman redesign!
Jake wins his choice of either any item or a portrait of himself to appear in the final version of HeroMachine 3. Congratulations! It was a great looking illustration.
I also tip my hat to Gero's Spy Smasher and Kyle's Ms. Scarlet, as they were the next runners-up.
Thanks to everyone who entered!

I stumbled across a new website of photo reference for comics artists, so I picked this photo to give it a whirl. For me, this is an example of how photo reference can rob your illustration of life, making them feel too stiff and static. Part of the artistry of drawing super-hero or action comics is knowing what to exaggerate, what parts of the anatomy to enlarge or shrink or bend or twist into arrangements that are hyper-realistic, heightening the drama and impact of the scene. When you're tied too tightly to a photograph, you lose that ability.
The key is to use photo reference as a guide to how some specific bits look ("Oh, so THAT'S how the pinkie lies when holding a sword from that angle") and not tracing it wholesale.
