It looks like the sort of detail that is an important backstory element. Do you have one in mind?

I just can’t even tell you how many virtual time outs I’ve been in . . .

[ahem] A shadow montage of the stunned family at the table might be a nice touch. If done correctly, it might very well illustrate the old saw, “words hit as hard as a fist.”

–I’d have to say that Danni was very wise to set that boundary right away, just as she did. Admirable, good catch. –Maybe building on it would be the logical next step?

@herr d: Thanks man! Where have you been lately? I haven’t seen you around.

So many projects, so little time. I’ve started cocatenating posts, so I may not be as visible. I’m beginning to get back to Zephyr, though.

Any more you do with post #273 you should probably put a copy in the Tips & Tricks or custom items threads. Nice work.

    Now THAT’S a heavy metal-heady pose.

Don’t worry about becoming more like me. You’re safely on the way. The first step IS having your characters take on a life of their own. As long as they never cross worlds without your permission, especially to this one, you’re fine.

My four-year-old, in the middle of me explaining that making other people late is stealing time from them, and therefore worth apologizing for, suddenly declared she’d be Dr. Who when she grew up so she wouldn’t HAVE to be sorry. [prideful 3 seconds of reminiscing] Pretty bright for a four-year-old who hasn’t fully separated the fantasies from reality, but not so good for someone sixteen and learning to drive, right?

Someday you’ll have characters coming alive while you safely operate heavy machinery like me. Laugh I’m confident you’ll get there!

Mortimer planned on being a great adventurer.

He should have planned out a few more details . . .

*Artist’s note: This one took a while. My new job, my story in the Writer’s Room, doing snap-work for Hairy, the regular contests, and adjusting to the kids’ summer routines all slowed me down quite a bit. It’s been underway since the day after the lost temple opening on page 21.

A bit of snap work done for Hairy. Titled ‘Quandary.’

Dee is this great masseuse who has a table not far from my home. Myself and several other people stop by randomly when we can. She has the lightest touch, and can massage a surprising amount of sore muscles at one time. Her hair’s always a mess, and her cigarette breaks are long enough that not everyone likes her. I stopped by one day recently to discover she had both arms in ace bandages. I didn’t expect her to be on the job at all. –You know, I couldn’t even tell a difference?

I was at work the other day when I thought of this. Bending the wrist this way to have the protrusions come out of the radius and ulna should be much more realistic for the long spikes with slight curve. Another advantage would be that the fingers could still be used.
Anyone care to improve on it?

More snap-work. “Glimpse.” I can’t figure out why I haven’t been asked to do this pic before now. It’s of Hairy’s ‘doorknob’ head . . .

. . . yeah, that nap did it. Somehow I imagined her doing Joan Baez folk ballads, but this works. I don’t know whether my speakers actually DID handle both songs at once, or my sleep-deprived state merged them. Either way, the songs sound a LOT better one at a time–take it from me.

I think I just somehow listened to both of them at the same time waiting for the part in English by a female vocalist. Laugh I’m going for a nap now. Good picture, anyway.

    Chapter 13: The Smaller Box

Is THAT what rotten moonshine and stagnant water smells like? That’s just how I imagined it–
“Thank you both,” said Tony, very quietly.
    Are you CRYING? “What’s wrong?”
“I finally will know why my mama and papa died. I will be sure. No more doubt. Of course you realize I must keep this quiet until the right time.”
    “Of course.” said Mike.
“I don’t mind keeping quiet till you’re ready, Tony,” said Jennifer. “But you probably want to call Backington Studios very soon. I could write your information release, and you could get some very good advertising out of this . . . “
“You two can break this story. But not till I say. I don’t care about the publicity. Mr. Crowe is my friend, but his father Tommy ‘The Claw’ was probably the one who killed my parents. I need to — to think about this for a while. Here. Let’s clean up for dinner. This room will take a while to dry out and be safe to sort through.”
Not a mob boss at all. Poor guy. Wait. Tommy was David’s granddad. He went missing the day David turned five. No wonder David is so rotten. His granddad was a $^#@ing hit man! I hope he’s in a shallow grave under the SEWER somewhere.
Both men cleaned up and then wordlessly, automatically put on aprons and garbage bags on one side of their bodies. Then each put on one of a pair of elbow-length rubber dishwashing gloves that Henri brought on a covered tray between the soup and salad. Just as wordlessly, Jennifer slid their steak plates to herself one at a time–I’ve never seen such grateful smiles. All I’m doing is cutting up their steaks so the boys can keep working on their buried treasure.
Jennifer sliced both of Mike’s steaks and two of Tony’s so they could continue taking turns bailing water from the flooded, formerly hidden alcove with the glass dressing sampler basket and a cracker bowl. Even with her hands aching slightly, she couldn’t hold in the smile. Young Mike and Ballast Tony after the treasure–arrrrr! I guess that makes me Long Jennifer with two wooden legs instead of one.

A twitching, greedy, murderous eye on a red-haired face screaming about gold in a small wooden box–

Where did THAT come from? Am I falling asleep at dinner?
    “What’s wrong?” said Mike.
Jennifer pointed into the dark alcove. The three visible crooked stacks of wooden crates barely fit in the space had obviously settled as the bottom crates rotted to pieces over time. All the crates were the same size except for a smaller, darker wooden box on the very top of the middle stack. “I’m thinking the murders weren’t just about some overdue moonshine.”

Pretty good, and, I must say, neat idea for built-in eyelids.

Just out of curiosity, did you use a porcelain doll as a model for your steampunk entry? The face makes me think that. Excellent works, however you’ve managed.

That happened to me too. I checked my vision and everything. Don’t worry. A massive number of mes would sympathize greatly with any minority. The trick would be making sure the mes weren’t wiped out before we arrested the bad guys.
