Character Contest #H02 “Cryptozoology” Winner

This turned out to be a hard contest to judge, all of the entries were great. It took a while for Isia and I to narrow it down to just one winner. Following are all of the entries in no certain order.

And the Winner is:

Congratulations to Vectorman316. Good job to all of the entrants.

p.s. I hope you like the Comic Book pages.

Character Contest #H02 “Cryptozoology”

"Cryptozoology" the study of creatures whose reported existence is unproved. Big Foot, Loch Ness and many more have been around for years, I want you to show me what you think they look like. No limit this week. Have fun and show us the Monsters.

Winner of Character Contest #H01

All of the entries were very good, but I can not make all of them the winner. There was one that stood out, and captured the meaning of the contest. I give you the winner of my first Character Contest: Worf.

P.S. I hope by next week to have all my ducks in a roll, and I will make my post a little fancier.

Character Contest #H01 “Robotic Duo”

For my first challenge I would like to honor the famous duos both past and future. There has always been a straight man and a funny man teamed up to bring a smile to our faces. Abbott & Costello, Laurel & Hardy, C3PO &R2D2, and Twiki & Dr. Theopolis are a few of the most famous duos out there. Your challenge this week is to create a Robotic Duo.

With the help of my wife Isia, I will be judging the contest with a different eye. We are not looking for fancy bells and whistles or elaborate backgrounds. I'm looking to see if the character really fit the theme of the contest?

I’ll pick my personal favorites when the week is over.  The rules otherwise are the same as always:

  • All entries must be in JPG or PNG form (BMPs are too big), posted to a publicly accessible website (like the HeroMachine forums, ImageShack, PhotoBucket, or whatever);
  • Entries must be made as a comment or comments to this post, containing a link directly to the image and the character name;
  • The image cannot have been used in any previous HeroMachine challenge;
  • Please name your files as [your name]-[character name].[file extension] before you upload it. So DiCicatriz, for instance, would save his “Bayou Belle” character image as DiCicatriz-BayouBelle.png.
  • Please make the link go directly to the image (like this) and not to a hosting jump page (like this). See this post on how to get the direct link for most sites.
  • All entries must be in by  Saturday, when I’ll choose my personal favorites.

Limit two entries this week.

P.S. I forgot to add that dblade will be offering prizes to the winners.
I would like to thank him for the offer.
Here is how the prizes will work:

1. At the end of each month I will have a poll that includes the weekly winners for that month.
Everyone will then be allowed to vote for the best design of that month. That winner will be
the prize winner for that month.
2. Each quarter of the year (every three months) the monthly winners will be placed in a poll for
everyone to vote for the best design for the quarter. The winner will be the prize winner for
that quarter.
3. At the end of the year, the four quarterly winners will go head to head in a vote off for the
best design of the year. The winner will be the prize winner for the year.

Because it is the last month of this year we will only be having the weekly winners going up
for the monthly prize.

All prizes will be between the winners and dblade.

Character Design Challenge: Squire Random of Randomberg

If this isn't random, I don't know what is.

We haven't done a "random name" character contest in six months, so I think it's about time we revisited this always-fun concept. It's pretty straightforward and a great way to stretch your creative muscles.

Go to the Seventh Sanctum Superhero/Villain Name Generator and choose "10" from the number of names to generate. Leave the other selection boxes at their default and hit "Generate". Your character(s) must be based on one of these generated names. Try your best to limit yourself to one spin of the wheel instead of generating names over and over till you get one you like!

It would also be fun to post your list of ten when you get them, just for grins.

I'll pick my personal favorites when the week is over, with the one I like best being featured in the right column for the week. The rules otherwise are the same as always:

No limit on entries this week, so knock yourselves out. Just make them good!

Character Challenge 103: Zombies Scary Stuff

I am not a huge zombie scary stuff fan, but since it IS Halloween, I figured we might as well give it a whirl.

So your challenge this week is:

Create an awesome zombie!

Make Something Scary!

It could be a shambling zombie or a spooky ghost, a cackling witch or a disgusting pirate. Take a classic kids' Halloween costume and give it the really scary treatment. I'll pick my personal favorites when the week is over, with the one I like best being featured in the right column for the week. The rules otherwise are the same as always:

(ETA: Apparently people hate zombies, so I changed it to a generic Scary Stuff Halloween type challenge.)

Character Challenge 102: Speedster

Super heroes have certain kinds of archetypes, and one of the classics is the speedster. You know what I'm talking about, it's folks like The Flash, Jessie Quick, Whizzer, and Quicksilver.

So your challenge this week is:

Create an awesome speedster character!

Character Design Challenge 101: Gamma Madness!

via Redditor Skitchbot.

When I was in high school, one of my favorite RPGs was "Gamma World", a post-apocalyptic setting where you could get the most random and bizarre creatures you've ever imagined. Playing a three-eyed human-plant hybrid with psychic powers and a bird leg growing out of his back was pretty much de rigueur. It was about as surreal as a game could get, and it's what inspired me for your character design challenge this week:

Create an awesome character portrait based on a randomly generated Gamma-World NPC via this great web site. Include the text description you're given in the comment where you post your image link!

You will get ten random character descriptions, from which you can choose one or all. I'll pick my personal favorites when the week is over, with the one I like best being featured in the right column for the week. The rules otherwise are the same as always:

Character Design Contest One Hundred!

The very first Character Design Challenge/Contest was held on April 21, 2009, more than three years ago; it's a little stunning to me that it's been going on for three years. Wow. The theme on that initial foray was the randomly chosen word "Capstan", and the winner was the legendary Imp:

I bring it up now because after all this time, we are at the One Hundredth Edition of this bi-weekly exercise in creativity! That's right, 100 times I've thrown out an idea and you all have owned it, coming up with awesome image after awesome image.

I wanted to do something special to commemorate this centennial edition, so here goes:

I want to see your best HeroMachine work of all time.

Every person gets one, and only one, entry, with the exception that it cannot have won a challenge before (to keep it fair). You can have entered in a contest in the past, though, it just can't have been the overall winner.

I want this to be as much a gallery of your awesome work as it is a contest, a celebration, if you will, of your creativity and artistic vision. I am sure I will be blown away as always.

Next Monday I will put all submissions into a big huge poll that everyone can vote on. The following Monday, the top five vote-getters will each win a custom character sketch, drawn by me, of the winning character. That's five, five, FIVE winners, people!

The usual guidelines for submitting entries apply, of course:

Character Design Challenge 99: Wingin' It

There's no WAY I'd take this case!

Your Character Design Challenge this week is to create the most awesome illustration possible featuring any item from the Backplane-Wings set. You could create an angel, or a bird-themed character, or a sea-faring monarch with teeny tiny wings on his ankles (as if anyone would believe that!), or a big flying mech, or an aircraft, or a sadistic vampire in his bat form, or anything else you can think of so long as at least one Wing item is present in the illustration.

I'll pick my personal favorites when the week is over, with the one I like best being featured in the right column for the week. The rules otherwise are the same as always:

  • All entries must be in JPG or PNG form (BMPs are too big), posted to a publicly accessible website (like the HeroMachine forums, ImageShack, PhotoBucket, or whatever);
  • Entries must be made as a comment or comments to this post, containing a link directly to the image and the character name;
