Pop Quiz: Ruffles

Happy Saturday, folks! Your one-day quick-fire challenge is:

Make something using this item from Neckwear!

It could be a hat, or a broach, or a pterodactyl ... Ahem. Anything, really, just so long as whatever you come up with incorporates the item into the final illustration. One caveat, though -- you can't use it as Neckwear.

You only get one entry -- that's right, just one! So make it your best. Most of the other rules are the same as for a regular contest, but instead of a whole week I'll announce the winner tomorrow evening (since I'm getting this post up a bit late).

  • All entries must be in JPG or PNG form (BMPs are too big), posted to a publicly accessible website (like ImageShack, PhotoBucket, the UGO Forums, whatever);
  • Entries must be made as a comment or comments to this post, containing a link directly to the image and the character name;
  • Please name your files as [your name]-[character name].[file extension]. So DiCicatriz, for instance, would save his "Bayou Belle" character image as DiCicatriz-BayouBelle.png.
  • Please make the link go directly to the image (like this) and not to a hosting jump page (like this). Here's a quick-start guide on how to do that for various image hosting services.

The winner will receive their choice of either one item or one portrait to be included in the final HeroMachine 3 release, or one Sketch of the Day style drawing where you pick the subject and I draw it how I like.

Good luck!

Caption Contest 123: Not for Teacher

Your challenge this week is to come up with the best replacement dialog for this comics panel (courtesy of the Mighty God King):

The best entry (as judged by yours truly) wins the author's choice of either any item they like or any portrait to be included in HeroMachine 3′s final release, or a custom black and white “Sketch of the Day” style illustration (you pick the subject, I draw it however I like).

All entries must be left as a comment (or comments) to this post. Keep ‘em clean (appropriate for a late-night broadcast TV show), but most importantly, keep ‘em funny!

No limit to entries, but please, self-edit and only put up ones you genuinely think are good!

Pop Quiz: Hammer Shield Time!

Happy Saturday, folks! Your one-day quick-fire challenge is:

Make a shield!

You could go for a classic Medieval battle shield, a far-future photon protector, a super-heroic Captain America style barrier, or anything else you can think of. But it has to be just the shield, no character or background or anything.

You only get one entry -- that's right, just one! So make it your best. Most of the other rules are the same as for a regular contest, but instead of a whole week I'll announce the winner tomorrow evening (since I'm getting this post up a bit late).

  • All entries must be in JPG or PNG form (BMPs are too big), posted to a publicly accessible website (like ImageShack, PhotoBucket, the UGO Forums, whatever);

Character Contest 92: Soldier

All give some, some give all.

Ordinarily I'd follow up last week's Character Contest with a Caption Contest, but given that it's Memorial Day in the U.S., when we honor those in our military who have sacrificed their lives, I wanted to do another design contest, this time on the theme of "Soldier". We're not talking about the solo barbarian with the giant two-handed sword, or the general with glittering medals, but those in the trenches who do the grunt work, in the tradition of "Sergeant Rock" and "The Unknown Soldier". Men, women, robots, aliens, animals, orcs, whoever they are, these are the individual weapon-wielders who go with teams of their fellow soldiers where they're ordered and do their best to make it back alive.

The person with the winning entry as selected by our expert panel (i.e. me) will win their choice of a) a portrait to go in HeroMachine 3, b) an item to go in HeroMachine 3, or c) a custom black and white "Sketch of the Day" style drawing (also by me). The rules otherwise are the same as always:

  • All entries must be in JPG or PNG form (BMPs are too big), posted to a publicly accessible website (like ImageShack, PhotoBucket, the UGO Forums, whatever);
  • Entries must be made as a comment or comments to this post, containing a link directly to the image and the character name;
  • The image cannot have been used in any previous HeroMachine character design contest;
See this post on how to get the direct link for most sites.
  • All entries must be in by next Monday, when I'll choose a winner.

No limit on entries this week, so knock yourselves out. Just make them good!

And a sincere thank-you to anyone out there who has a loved one who gave their all while wearing the uniform. We can never thank you enough.

Pop Quiz: Setting the Scene

Happy Saturday, folks! Your one-day quick-fire challenge is:

"Rocky Background" by AMS

Make an environment or setting!

In other words, I just want the area where a character might be seen, but without the character. You can get some great ideas from the UGO Forums' Custom Backgrounds topic or the somewhat less-populated HeroMachine forum on the same subject if you need examples. Like the Fortress of Solitude without Superman, or a forest glen without the fairy, or a computer without a fat bald geek sitting at it writing this ... here ... paragraph. Hm.

Anyway. You only get one entry -- that's right, just one! So make it your best. Most of the other rules are the same as for a regular contest, but instead of a whole week I'll announce the winner either tonight or first thing in the morning.

  • All entries must be in JPG or PNG form (BMPs are too big), posted to a publicly accessible website (like ImageShack, PhotoBucket, the UGO Forums, whatever);
  • Entries must be made as a comment or comments to this post, containing a link directly to the image and the character name;

Character Contest 91: The Phantom ________

Note: Phantom Stranger is already taken so don't do it!

I'm going to try something a little different this week with our own HeroMachine version of Mad Libs. You'll have to fill in the following description for your character, replacing the blanks. For instance, the name is "The Phantom _______," so you'd replace the blanks with a word to name your character. You might go for "The Phantom PIRATE" or "The Phantom NINJA" or "The Phantom CHIPMUNK."

So here's your description. You don't have to do any of these except the character title, but it would be fun to play along if you are so inclined:

The Phantom _____!

Straight from the pages of _____ Comics, it's the _____-spangled adventurer! Along with sidekick "_____ the _____ Wonder ", racing through _____ City on the astounding _____-mobile, you won't believe what you see!

  • Please make the link go directly to the image (like this) and not to a hosting jump page (like this). If you see "preview" or "rotate" somewhere in the link you're probably doing it wrong.
  • All entries must be in by next Monday, when I'll choose a winner.

No limit on entries this week, so knock yourselves out. Just make them good!

Pop Quiz: Companion Dress Up

Happy Saturday, people! Unless you're on the other side of the world in which case it's already Sunday. If so, drop us a line and let us know what the world is like in the fuuuuuuuture ... Ahem.

Your one-day quick-fire challenge is:

Dress Up a Humanoid Companion!

In other words, make a character illustration like you normally would, only the body has to be one of the items from Companion-Humanoids. You can do a little or a lot, but the Companion has to be the main character.

You only get one entry -- that's right, just one! So make it your best. Most of the other rules are the same as for a regular contest, but instead of a whole week I'll announce the winner either tonight or first thing in the morning.

  • All entries must be in JPG or PNG form (BMPs are too big), posted to a publicly accessible website (like ImageShack, PhotoBucket, the UGO Forums, whatever);

Caption Contest 122: BLAM BLAM BLAM!

Your challenge this week is to come up with the best replacement dialog for this comics panel:

The best entry (as judged by yours truly) wins the author's choice of either any item they like or any portrait to be included in HeroMachine 3′s final release, or a custom black and white “Sketch of the Day” style illustration (you pick the subject, I draw it however I like).

Pop Quiz: Mother's Day

Tomorrow is Mother's Day in the US of A -- wait, is it Mother's Day in other countries, too? I'm so parochial! -- so your one-day slightly-more-complicated-than-usual quick-fire challenge is:

Show us what a super-hero (or super-villain!) would give their mother for Mother's Day!

My mind boggles at the possibilities. Also, just because my mind is generally in a boggle-ish state.

You only get one entry -- that's right, just one! So make it your best. Most of the other rules are the same as for a regular contest, but instead of a whole week I'll announce the winner either tonight or first thing in the morning.

  • All entries must be in JPG or PNG form (BMPs are too big), posted to a publicly accessible website (like ImageShack, PhotoBucket, the UGO Forums, whatever);

Character Contest 90: Fifth Anniversary Random Edition

This was the most random thing I could find on the Internet. That was safe for work.

We haven't done a "random name" character contest in half a year, so I think it's about time we revisited this always-fun concept.

It's pretty straightforward and a great way to stretch your creative muscles.

Whoever comes up with the best character based on a random name generated by Seventh Sanctum Superhero/Villain Name Generator will win a) his or her choice of either any item they like to be included in the final HeroMachine 3 version; b) a portrait to be included in the final HeroMachine 3 version, or c) a "sketch of the day" style custom drawing where you pick the theme and I do the drawing however I like. The rules are fairly simple:

The person with the winning entry as selected by our expert panel (i.e. me) will win their choice of a) a portrait to go in HeroMachine 3, b) an item to go in HeroMachine 3, or c) a custom black and white "Sketch of the Day" style drawing (also by me). The rules otherwise are the same as always:

  • Go to the Seventh Sanctum Superhero/Villain Name Generator and choose "10" from the number of names to generate. Leave the other selection boxes at their default and hit "Generate". Your character(s) must be based on one of these generated names. Try your best to limit yourself to one spin of the wheel instead of generating names over and over till you get one you like!
  • All entries must be in JPG or PNG form (BMPs are too big), posted to a publicly accessible website (like ImageShack, PhotoBucket, the UGO Forums, whatever);
  • Entries must be made as a comment or comments to this post, containing a link directly to the image and the character name;
  • The image cannot have been used in any previous HeroMachine character design contest;
If you see "preview" or "rotate" somewhere in the link you're probably doing it wrong.
  • All entries must be in by next Monday, when I'll choose a winner.

No limit on entries this week, so knock yourselves out. Just make them good!
