Pop Quiz: Hammer Shield Time!

Happy Saturday, folks! Your one-day quick-fire challenge is:

Make a shield!

You could go for a classic Medieval battle shield, a far-future photon protector, a super-heroic Captain America style barrier, or anything else you can think of. But it has to be just the shield, no character or background or anything.

You only get one entry -- that's right, just one! So make it your best. Most of the other rules are the same as for a regular contest, but instead of a whole week I'll announce the winner tomorrow evening (since I'm getting this post up a bit late).

  • All entries must be in JPG or PNG form (BMPs are too big), posted to a publicly accessible website (like ImageShack, PhotoBucket, the UGO Forums, whatever);
  • Entries must be made as a comment or comments to this post, containing a link directly to the image and the character name;
  • Please name your files as [your name]-[character name].[file extension]. So DiCicatriz, for instance, would save his "Bayou Belle" character image as DiCicatriz-BayouBelle.png.
  • Please make the link go directly to the image (like this) and not to a hosting jump page (like this). Here's a quick-start guide on how to do that for various image hosting services.

The winner will receive their choice of either one item or one portrait to be included in the final HeroMachine 3 release, or one Sketch of the Day style drawing where you pick the subject and I draw it how I like.

Good luck!

    You mean, here or on the forums? I guess that’s possible. Is there a reason why?

    Correct, only shields. No characters.

    Heyla!

    This shield comes from a tribe where they attached their “kills” to their shields. The shield is used during war time to show how fierce the Warrior is.

  11. TOOL says:

    I updated a version of this I made some time ago, and I have some back story on the idea I had for this piece. I chose this shield because it is a symbol of defense for me not only for my country because of my career but for being the defense of my own family. The blue represents the infantry in which I served. The white cross symbolizes God and my christian faith. The crown of thorns is for His son Jesus who endureded the pain of the price for our sins. The Red is for the blood that was shed. The White dove is for the holy ghost. The rifle is for duty and my service to our military. The sword is a symbol of strength and my family heritage. Lastly I put my family name upon a banner below in military script. I like it a lot how it came out and I hope you do too.

    First time entering, WOOHOO!
    No particular symbolism for myself here, just wanted to make a neat piece of heraldry. (Note: the Latin is just my inexpert and haphazard playing around. It may not make any sense to anyone besides myself.)

  16. Myro says:

    Sure, we’ve all used the term while gaming, but has anyone actually considered what it would be like carrying a “meat shield?”

    I’m not going to lie. This might be pretty gross.

    Sadly, this is the only idea that popped in my head today.

  17. Nick Hentschel says:

    A little treat from Greek mythology: AEGIS, the shield of Zeus, upon which the head of the Gorgon Medusa was mounted. (On Facebook page.)

  18. logosgal says:

    Never fully understanding what’s going on, but always there when the plot demands, whether protecting a bad guy’s escape or taking the bullet for a main character: The Human Shield!

    …which was surprisingly hard to convey with “just the shield, no character or background or anything.” 🙂

    I not make an fantasy or sci fi shield. My work is a tribute for my well hated but in my heart deep loved country. This is the Coat of Arm of hungary. Why i choose this because i think this is a cool coat of arm, and very deep meaning of this for every hungarian. I not make perfect work, because some place there is a little pictures, icons, and i have no time and inspiration to do.

    Here is the meaning of the symbols. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coat_of_arms_of_Hungary

    And thank for all fellow american, because the United States save the Holy crown of Hungary and give back for my country in the 1970’s.

    P.s. for the hungarians who check this.
    Remélem a magyarok nem sértődnek meg, hogy ezt csináltam szerettem volna tisztelemet kifejezni az ország felé ahol élek, és büszke vagyok az országunk címerére.

    I included some face, but I think it would be kinda confusing if it wasn’t present.

    Surprisingly, this wasn’t too popular with the army.
