HM3: Cape fronts

I am still plowing through HM2 sets that need to be converted to HeroMachine 3. I've just posted the new version of the old "Coats-CapeFronts" set, which can now be found in "ShoulderRight-Capes". Here they are:

Holler in the comments if you either see something wrong, or if there are specific items you'd like to see added. Requests with links to an image of what you want are the most helpful, but please make it specific -- if I want to do a Google Image Search for "Capes" or "Cloaks" so I can get twelve dozen pictures I will do so. Limit yourself to no more than three requests, otherwise I'm going to mentally mark it as "spam" and move on.

That sounds harsh. I don't mean it that way, it's just that sometimes too much is worse than nothing at all. So only request things you really want, I think I have a pretty solid set already and am not looking for general reference, just specific items likely to be of interest to lots of different people to flesh it out.

Sketch blogs

I wanted to highlight a couple of the "daily sketch" type blogs that inspired me to start my own "Sketch of the Day. Or Every Other Day. Week. Whatever, Quit Hassling Me!" category. Shockingly they're even less consistent about publishing than I am, but it's still so much fun to see a new sketch pop up in my news reader. I find it inspiring. Something about freeing the artist from the production schedule, of having to illustrate a story, makes for a very rewarding process. And sketches instead of full-blown illustrations capture a sense of whimsy and raw imagination it's hard to find in other places.

First up is "bletchskog", the daily sketch site of "Hector Plasm" and "Invincible" artist Nate Bellegarde. Here's one example I particularly enjoyed:

It's inked, while most of his sketches are done in pencil, but I think he was able to retain that dynamic and spontaneous feel even so. Which is harder to do with ink than you'd think.

Next is former "Invincible" artist/co-creator Cory Walker's "scatchblag". Again, these are mostly black and white pencil sketches, though Cory goes in more for Supergirl costume designs and tends to have a little more wide-ranging a selection of subject matter than Nate. He also is able to capture more serious, somber moods, as you can see in this one:

Finally, Cliff Chiang's site doesn't do a "Sketch of the Day" thing but he does post a lot of character sketches and such that achieve much the same effect. I particularly enjoy the convention sketches these guys post, those are a lot of fun. I can't imagine how he cranked this out at a convention along with all the other commissions and still had it turn out so spectacularly well:

All three of these sites are emphatically "Things I Like" and I hope you will, too.

Giakacious!

By a runaway margin, we are apparently a lot more heroic than one might have though after heaving up one's guts AFTER the last fight was over. We've gathered our wits together and decide to charge in and help the ugly, endangered little children.

You sprint towards the wagon. People are running everywhere in panic as the Kraan make their attack, carrying their poor victims off into the darkening sky. A large Kraan is hovering above the wagon and three snarling Giaks drop from its back onto the startled horses. You must fight them or leave the wagon and run to the safety of a nearby farmhouse.

I like what Worf said at the last decision point, that even if we die we will go out yelling KRRRAAAAAAAN! But don't let that say you.

SOD.211

I don't think anyone's noticed, but I'm way behind on these. Sorry -- I'll do my best to catch up over the weekend. In the meantime, enjoy this disgusting spectacle that makes me simultaneously ashamed and giddy like a school girl.

Lone Wolf. Or Rabbit. You decide.

Our feelings of human camaraderie have prevailed -- or possibly we just wish to be surrounded by more human shields in the event of an attack -- and we have decided to seek out the company of the refugees fleeing along the road.

The people look tired and hungry. They have come many miles from their burning city. Suddenly, you hear the beat of huge wings coming from the north.

'Kraan, Kraan! Hide yourselves!' the cry goes up all along the road.

Just in front of you, a wagon carrying small children breaks down, its right wheel jammed in a furrow. The children scream in panic.

[polldaddy poll="3583503"]

Now this is where the rubber meets the road! Or the wagon wheel gets in a rut. Or the foot falls in a puddle. Whatever, look, we've got a clear choice here -- run like a rabbit or stand like a lion? I'll just note that Hercules wore the skin of a lion, but not a rabbit. However, they never made a movie called "The Rabbit King" either. They did make "Watership Down", though, which was pretty awesome. Am I rambling? Focus, Jeff, FOCUS!

In any event, look at this kids before you make your decision:

First of all, those children are clearly possessed by Satan. What they need is not a Kai Warrior but a good exorcist. Can there be any doubt the one on the right is eating her mother right now? I think not. And the baby is at least half caterpillar, which is just disgusting.

So really, the choice is whether to run away and hope to fight again, or stand up to an invading group of flying badasses in order to save the spawn of the devil. At least partly human hell children, admittedly, but hell spawn nonetheless.

So what'll it be, and why?

HM3: New chainmail pattern

I just updated the main HeroMachine 3 applet with a new pattern, meant to look a little more like chainmail:

It's the last pattern in the "Patterns" tab. Let me know if you would like any tweaks to it. I don't plan on adding any more patterns, each one increases the file size by 10% or so.

Nature Insignia update

With help from the nice commenters on the last post, I've added the following items to Insignia-Nature for HeroMachine 3. Thanks guys!

HM3: It's only natural

I'm happy to announce that the "Insignia-Nature" set of items for HeroMachine 3 is now live. In addition to almost three pages of nature-themed items from the Insignia-Standard set you've already seen, I've added another three pages of all-new entries as well:

Hope you like 'em! If you think I missed some items that ought to be there, or if you see a glitch of some sort, by all means let me know in the comments.
