Anime Talk: Ranma 1/2

This weeks “Anime Talk” will be a short review of the of 1989 anime series “Ranma 1/2”.  An adaption of the of 1987 manga series of the same name and is what is considered to be a harem anime.  What is harem anime you might be asking ? In short a harem anime is basically an series with one main character, typically male that finds himself surrounded by at least three often more beautiful female characters that have romantic interests in him.

Ranma 1/2 follows the adventure of a 16 year old boy named Ranma Saotome who has been studying martial arts under the tutelage of his father from. Ranma is a highly skilled martial artist but he does have one major problem, during a training session in China Ranma and his father each accidentally fell into a magically cursed pool of water.  The result of the accidentally immersion  is the cursed waters  is that whenever Ranma comes in contact with cold water he is transformed into a girl, and needs hot water to transform back into his natural form. Ranma’s father Genma Saotome is similarly cursed in such that when he comes in contact with cold water he is  transformed into a giant panda.

The series begins with the Saotome’s in their alternate forms fighting each other in the streets arguing about an arranged marriage Genma made with his friend Soun Tendo to one of Soun’s three daughters Akane Tendo who as fate would have it hates “boys” meaning males her age, Ranma being no exception. The entire series revolves around Ranma’s desire to break the curse, while attending high school with his fiance. During the course of the series Ranma and Akane become closer while at the same time maintaining the that the both still do not care about each other. The relationship of our two love birds are further complicated by the need to keep Ranma’s secret and by the fact the Ranma is pursed both in him male and female forms by many other suitors which makes Akane jealous even though she denies feelings for him.

All in all I have to say Ranma 1/2 is a fun action filled  series that keeps things light and humorous. In my opinion it is a must see Anime that is one of my personal favorites.

HM3: Female Facial Features Now Added

I’ve just updated HeroMachine 3 with support for three new sets of items, female versions with properly positioned and sized ears, eyebrows, and noses. Mouths and eyes already had such sets published, but until now you had to manually tinker with the others to get them to fit.

Let me know if you see any weirdness. Hopefully this will make it faster and easier to create your female characters.

As usual, you may need to clear your browser cache (note, do NOT clear Flash cookies or you’ll lose your saves!) if the new options aren’t immediately visible in the set selection drop down list.

Poll Position: DC vs Marvel

DC vs Marvel

This weeks poll position is a simple one, though one that is likely to be heated. I want to know which of the big two is your favorite, DC or Marvel Comics!

Personally I will have to go with Marvel, though out of my top five superheroes the top three are from DC. All in all I feel that Marvel is the more believable universe so that is why I have to say “Make Mine Marvel!”

Howdy Partner. For this weeks contest I want you to design me a mash up of the Wild West genre and another genre of your choosin’. HM3: Standard Female load working

With sincere apologies for taking so long on what was, at the end of a day, a very easy fix, I have updated HeroMachine 3 so that when you pick the “Standard Female Load” option on the start screen, you actually get a female and not a glowering male warrior. What you now get is this:

new-female-standard

Note that while the Standard Male appears in black and white and nude, the female has color and items. That’s because a lot of the female items don’t go in the right place or aren’t positioned properly to fit on the standard female body. In order for the rotation, scaling, and positioning to hold, I have to have an item actually present on the canvas. That way when you change it to one you actually prefer, it’s in the right spot. Also too, colors are nice.

All of this is temporary (for certain very long values of “temporary”, as history has shown to my embarrassment) until I get all the items converted, duped, and/or recreated so they’re in the right spot by default. As time has gone on I’ve realized I will have to abandon my original plan of loading up standard items that are rotated on the fly to be right, and instead will have to just create whole new female sets where everything’s in the proper place without fiddling with it.

Anime Talk: Western Bastardization

Robotech_wallpapers_3

This weeks Anime Talk I want to discus the Western Habit of taking an Anime series and then severely altering  it but editing out scenes, and or completely changing  the dialog so that the series is no longer anywhere near what the original source material was. One of the biggest offers of this is series known as Robotech. What we know as Robotech was originally three separate and unrelated anime series Super Dimensional Fortress Macross, Super Dimensional Calvary Southern Cross, and  Genesis Climber Mospeada. These three Anime were bought buy the company that made Robotech and were nearly completely rewritten and meshed together.

There are many other examples of this happening also,  The Original Voltron ( Originally named Beast King GoLion in Japan ) was another series that was heavily rewritten for the original, and The Anime Sailor Moon was edited to turn it from a Teenager and Young Adult show  into a kiddie show on Western tv.  I an an anime fan find this to be a bad thing and the only reason I can think of for it to be happening is that I think that the predominate point of view in western culture  is the cartoons are for kids, that adults wouldn’t want to watch them and so they must be edited and changed to remove any of the adult themes and stories. What do you all think about the Bastardization of Anime for the western Market ? Do you think it is a good thing, a Bad Thing, or does it just not matter to you ?
