Character Design Contest ♯102 (Christmas Trees) Winner

Well, it seems that after having a few close polls over the last couple of contests, it's back to business as usual now. That means, it was a walk over, with the winner thanking near as makes no difference half the vote. And you can't really say that Cliff and his Solstice Tree didn't deserve it. So congrats Cliff (hope you're feeling better now btw), please speak to dblade about your prize, and thanks to everyone else who entered. The CDC's will be returning after the new year, see y'all then.

Creators Club 2015 Volunteers?

I just thought I'd throw this one out there, just so everyone is prepared. When January comes around, I'll be looking to get another Creators Club poster organised.

For those of you who aren't in the know, the Creators Club poster is a community project where one of the members of the community (previously myself, Atomic Punk and Hammerknight) have come up with a theme for everyone to follow (Men In Black, Chibi's and Westerns), and then people create a self-portrait of themselves fitting to that theme. All of the self-portraits are then sent to the organiser, who then puts them all together in one big poster that showcases the community that year. It's not a challenge, it's just a bit of fun, you don't have to be a Power User to participate, you just have to use the site and follow the submission rules for the poster.

Now why am I telling you this when it obviously isn't January yet? Well, as I said, each of the previous Creators Club posters (apart from the 1st and 2nd ones, which were both done by HK) have been done by different people, and I was hoping we could continue that trend. So, if you want to volunteer to come up with a theme and put the poster together, this would be the place to do it. You will have to have people email you their entries, rather than having them posted on the blog, because the final product is meant to be a surprise for everyone else involved, so it would be better if people couldn't see what everyone else has done until the poster is ready to be shown. You wouldn't have to put the whole poster together in Heromachine, you can use photoshop or paint or similar to do that, but obviously all of the entries will be 100% Heromachine.

If no-one is interested in doing it, then I do have a few ideas myself that can work, so we can have a poster, but it would be more fitting for a community project to be organised by a community member, rather than one of the mods (again). If you're interested, comment below saying you're interested and send me an email at jr19759@hotmail.co.uk saying what your theme idea is. I won't be deciding on which person and theme to go with until the new year, so you have time to think of a totally awesome theme.

Anyway, hope you guys have some awesome ideas for me.

JR out.

Character Of The Week: Vampyrist- Effigy

I originally wasn't planning to do a COTW this week, I figured most people would be too busy with festive pursuits to have time to spare, especially considering its Friday. However, it would seem Vampyrist has other ideas. I nip on to the forums for a quick look, to see if anything has been posted whilst I was having my dinner and this is what I was greeted with.

Vampyrist is one of those classic 'machiners (not a term I tend to throw around lightly) who have a style that is truly their own, much like AMS or dblade, you can try and copy it as much as you like, but you'll never get it exactly right, it will never look as good as what he does. And this is as fine an example of the breed as I have ever seen.

If we just set the obvious aside for the moment, we'll kick off with something that has always impressed me about Vampyrist's work. He always seems to do very minimal shading at first glance, you notice a few sports of highlighting on the pants, the glow from the flames that is reflected off the leg, and you don't really think too much more of it. Then you look again and you notice the very subtle shadowing on the left foot, then the chin and the stomach and then the arm and chest. His subtlety with shading on his characters always gets me. It shows you don't have to use masses upon masses of light and shadow to get the result.

And now that that's out of the way, we can move on to the obvious. Masking the skeleton onto the flame effect (*wheels out COTW slogan board*)- simple but so effective. Now this is where you use masses and masses of light and shadow to get the result. I'm not even going to bother trying to count the layers of colour here, it would be pointless, but you have to give Vamp massive props for how good this looks. The fire looks so real and alive, you can feel the heat, and the black, almost charcoal look, of the bones in the flames contrasts so wonderfully against the vivid colour engulfing them. Best examples, just look at the right hand. And that right eye looks positively evil (as I'm sure was the intent). If people are still umping and erring over what to nominate for the Hall Of Fame (nominations are still open btw), you could do a lot worse than to nominate this.

Note: Obviously there won't be a COTW next week, I doubt much will be popping up on the forums next week and anyway, I'll be too busy to write it. Though you can of course expect a review of the Doctor Who Christmas Special on Thursday.

No Open Critique Day This Week

Open Critique Day will return January 9th, 2015.

Happy Holidays!
