Yeah, I figured it be something like that… And rightly so, it’s not fair if one person has a head start over another. Makes a lot of sense!

I know zypping takes ages, but I think you get a lot of satisfaction out of it at the end, particularly by looking at the image before and after you zypped it, and comparing the two.

Don’t I know it… just spent a good 3 hours on one picture. I think it’s worth it though! Check out my gallery thread to see it. And you’re right, there definitely is a certain satisfaction to getting it done. :)

Yeah, no problem. I’ll upload a text file of the face too if you’d like (but I’m on my ipad at the moment). So basically it’s just a normal head, but squashed vertically slightly. Then I used three masked circle insignia for the three rounded corners of the chin, and then squashed-into-a-line square insignia to join them up. That’s the outline.

The rest is just masking the left over bit of the head/covering with skin coloured rectangles, and positioning the facial features so it looks like he’s looking up the way. Not many haircuts work, so I just went for a basic one that happened to. Nothing fancy there!

Anyway, hope that helps. That seems to be one of the really good things about this forum, a proper willingness to share knowledge and experience. Glad I could add a small (very small!) drop into the ocean!

Right. Back to final year lasers and optic systems. Fun stuff.

Next up, The Villian. He likes to call himself ‘The Potentate’, but for me to do so would be pandering to his egocentric god-complex, so I’ll just call him James Neilson. He’s able to communicate with any technology that uses the EM spectrum which allows him access to pretty much anything he wants, in the world. There’s this thing called the internet, see. I don’t know if you’ve heard of it…

He worked at a facility in Switzerland producing bio-technology that could give the user superhuman abilities, but one evening he found the security was down, and couldn’t resist grabbing a power for himself. Having always looked to machines as the friends he never had, James became a technopath, changing the course of history forever.

See, he’s the source of all of the other character’s abilities, having sent the power generators to each of them, and hundreds more. Though always arrogant, the power pushed him over the edge, and when his new-found hedonism failed to satisfy he realised he wanted companions on ‘his level’, not mere mortals, and set his plan into action. He would bless these frail creatures with power from above. He would bestow them with his merciful gifts. How could they not love him in return? How could they not worship?!

(Sorry for turning your thread into an argument Weilyn. Can’t wait to see more of your work.)

I love this place. That’s what constitutes an argument?! Man. You’re all very civilised. :P

As for the Scrooge, picture, weilyn, it looks amazing. Like other people have said, you’ve really nailed the expression on his face. He looks haunted…

Thanks folks. I’m not very happy with the zypping on the mask, looks weird. Still, I can change that later. I’ll do one without the mask next. Shows some of his backstory…

Right, next character. His name is Benedict Smith, or Ben, and he has the ability to basically set himself on fire without being burned. I’ve got a whole mechanism of how it could work scientifically, but for now, I’ll just add in the picture. First time I’ve tried editing the pose by masking clothing in half, like for the 3/4 view, and I’m quite happy with it. Also first attempt at zyping (is that what it’s called?). Was looking through AMS’s thread, and it was a massive inspiration! You, my friend, are skilled. :)

Also, HeroMachine keeps moving my picture over to the right whenever I export it, so it’s half off screen. Any idea why that is?

Haha! Well, she was originally in her first year at uni doing English Lit, but when this happened, and she learned to control it, she did transfer to anatomy! It’s funny. I’ve got all this background worked out, and the outlines of a plot, but can never find the motivation to write anything. Come on Jonathan!

Possibly one of the grosest powers I’ve seen, but with really cool possibilities, she could turn her skin into a rainbow, or glow in the dark, or even have a colour for every emotion.

Yeah, that’s exactly what I was thinking. As well as being an expert at disguising herself, she could use tattoos as a way of silently communicating with people, hypnotise people (yes, really, check out this video of the cuttlefish), and, obviously, have the shock factor described above. If that wouldn’t stop someone in their tracks, I don’t know what would.

Thanks for all the encouragement, folks, I really appreciate it. I’ll maybe post a couple more tonight. They won’t be quite as inventive as this one, but it’ll introduce you to some of the characters!

Hi, I’m the Soupster, or Jonny, either works. In my final year at Uni studying Engineering, and currently using HeroMachine as a convenient little procrastination tool. I’ve had a superhero type story rattling around in my head for a while now, so I briefly used HeroMachine in the summer to get some characters on paper, as it were. Just come back to it now, and redoing some of them to take into account improvements to the story. I’ll put some of them up online soon, so watch the Art gallery section!
