    Meanwhile at the same time, but in another reality, events take place which will change this world forever…

    Monday, May 4th, 1891 – Meiringen, Swiss

    After the final contfrontation with his archenemy Sherlock Holmes at the Reichenbach Falls where he supposedly found his demise when he plunged into the depths, Professor Moriarty was found with shattered bones and a damaged face, after hitting the rocks at the bottom of the cascades, by his accomplice Colonel Sebastian Moran, who managed to salvage his severely injured partner in crime and bring him to a sanatorium where Moriarty was treated.

    Believed to be dead to the rest of the world, Moriarty slowly recovered from his worst injurys in a swiss sanatorium while being in a coma for over 3 years and when he finally awakened, he realized to his horror that he was now cripled and paraplegic. Since his crime syndicate was crushed by his nemesis Holmes in the meantime, he used his still superior criminal intellect to start a new criminal organisation that will later become know as the global operating “Network” – a sort of a job center for thieves, killers, mercenaries and whatnot.

    But there was still the problem with his health. He wasn’t getting younger and his physical condition deteriorated in the following years so much that he was even willing to fall back on unconventional methods to prolong his life. One of this methods included the work of german scientist who already had experimented with transplantations some decades earlier. When searching for his scientific journals Moriarty eventually encountered Viktor Frankenstein’s very own monstrous creation “Frank” who would oppose him to prevent his “fathers” work to fall in the wrong hands.

    In search of allies in his battle against Frankenstein’s monster Moriarty eventually rallied more infamous monster of its time and founded a group called “Monsters Society”. With their help, he managed not only to get possession of said documents, but also to collect some powerful ancient artifacts from around the world. Through the combination of magic and science Moriarty was finally able to overcome his physical limitations and become even more powerful than ever.

    Renfield was a 59 year old zoophagous maniac who suffered from delusions which compelled him to eat living insects, spiders, birds, and other creatures in the hope of obtaining their life-force for himself. When Count Dracula met him as an inmate at the lunatic asylum overseen by Dr. John Seward he offered to provide Renfield with an endless supply of food if he worshipped him. But when confronted by Mina Harker Renfield suffered an attack of conscience and attempts to fight Dracula who in turn severely injured him. Shortly after he died Renfield was bitten by Dracula and turned into a Ghul, an undead creature who feast on corpses. After the death of the vampire Count Renfield became a long-standing servant of Dracula’s son, “The Nightstalker”.

    Powers:

    Similar to a vampire, the Ghul possesses superhuman strength, speed, stamina, agility, reflexes and some sort of healing factor due to his undead nature. But unlike a real vampire he doesn’t feed of his victims blood, but rather of their flesh – preverably when they are already dead. In turn he can only shapeshift into myst but is also much less vulnerable to silver, wood, sunlight and religious icons than a common vampire would be.

    MR. HYDE

    Dr. Henry Jekyll was a man of fifty who occasionally felt he was battling between the good and evil within himself and had spent a great part of his life trying to repress evil urges that were not fitting for a man of his stature. In an attempt to mask this hidden evil within his personality he created a serum that transformed him into the smaller, younger, cruel, remorseless, evil Hyde. As time had gone by, Hyde growed both in power and size and after taking the potion repetitively, since it was Hyde’s violent activities that gave him the most thrills, Dr. Jekyll no longer relied upon it to unleash his alter ego. Eventually, Hyde growed so strong and violent that Jekyll became more and more addicted to his alter ego in his “need” to unleash his inner demons. This of course also drove him to attack and murder random people without apparent reason, making him a hunted outlaw throughout England.

    Powers:

    Dr. Jekyll can transform himself at will back and forth into a huge, powerful being which possessed superhuman strength sufficient to lift about 41 tons, advanced musculature that generates considerably less fatigue toxins during physical activity than the musculature of an ordinary human, a body that is much harder and more resistant to conventional physical injury than the body of a normal human, and an accelerated metabolism that allows him to rapidly heal from mild to moderate injuries faster than a normal human. As Mr. Hyde the effects of the aging process is slowed down drastically which provides him with an extended lifespan. Although well over 80 years of age, Mr.Hyde retains the health, appearance and physical vitality of a man in the physical prime of his life.

Soon there were rumors that forced him to leave the chair and go as a military advisor to London. In the metropolis, he built up an extensive criminal syndicate, in whose center he sat like a spider in its web” registering the trembling of each of the countless threads. Holmes made him responsible for the organization of half of all crime in London, and “nearly all that is undetected.”

    Powers:

    Professor Moriarty’s most dangerous weapon is his intellect. He is one of the top mortal minds on the planet and specializes in physics, robotics, cybernetics, genetics, biochemistry and even magic. His potential in the mystic arts comes from several ancient artefacts and learning lost Dark Arts from masters all over the world. He is considered one of the most powerful practitioners of sorcery but considers his scientific abilities to be more important and uses magic primarily to enhance his technologial creations. His cybernetic improved super-genius class mind works in the same way as an organic computer with unlimited storage capacity, only much faster, and is able to perform multiple tasks at once without losing focus on any of them by allocating a partition of his brain to each task.

    THE WOLFMAN

    The young American student Jack Weston was visiting his maternal great-uncle Talbot MacKenzie in Scotland when he foolishly decided, despite clear warnings of the villagers, to take a walk in the highlands during a full moon night. Wandering alone through the darkness, equipped only with an oil lantern, he quickly became uneasy when he heard a howl and he just started back to the village when the full moon came out from behind the clouds. At the same moment the noises got steadily closer until he was finally stopped by a supernaturally large animal that attacked and bit him. Barely surviving the mauling, Jack was taken to a hospital in London by his uncle, where he surprisingly quickly recovered from his severe injuries and woke up three weeks later. But when the next full moon rised, Jack realized that he was attacked by a werewolf and that heself now was cursed with lycanthropy.

    Powers:

    Over the years Jack Weston learned to control his curse and can now transform himself into a supernatural human/wolf hybrid through sheer force of will at any time while still retaining his normal intellect. During a full moon, however, he transforms in a more animalistic version of a werewolf and completely loses control. In his intermediate form he possesses superhuman strength and is able to lift about 1 ton; superhuman levels of stamina; enhanced agility, balance, reflexes, speed and bodily coordination; and superhumanly acute senses of sight, smell, and hearing similar to those of an actual wolf. The Wolfman’s claws and teeth are extremely sharp and tough, and his body is capable of completely regenerating massive tissue damage such as bullet wounds, slashes, punctures, blunt force trauma, and severe burns without so much as a scar in a short amount of time. As a “real” werewolf Jack Weston has a special vulnerability to objects or weapons composed of silver due to it’s mystical purity.

    THE GILL-MAN

    One of the last surviving members of a race of amphibious humanoids, the “Gill-man” was only known in local legends of a “man-fish” living in the Amazon Rainforest. That was until he was one day captured and taken away from his hidden family by an American adventurer who took him to the states and sold him to P.T. Barnum for his cabinet of curiosities. It was there, where Moriarty found and freed him, granting him the creatures absolute loyality.

    Powers:

    The Gill-man is fully amphibious, capable of breathing both in and out of the water and possesses superhuman strength as well as large, webbed hands with sharp claws on the tip of each finger. His scaly skin is extremely tough, which combined with a fast acting healing factor, allows it to survive wounds which would be fatal to humans, such as gunshots.

    THE INIVISIBLE MAN

    Griffin was a brilliant young university medical student with a psychopathic streak who discovered a formula that could make a human being invisible. But once he performed the process on himself he was unable to reverse it and wandered invisibly the streets of London, struggling to survive out in the open, unseen by those around him. After stealing some clothes, including a trenchcoat and hat, he wrapped his head in bandages and covered his eyes with large dark goggles to make himself visible again and took up residence in the village of Iping, where he tried to reverse his experiment with the assistance from a tramp named Thomas Marvel. To bankroll his experiments he resorted on burglary but was soon robbed himself by Thomas who he pursued to to the town of Port Burdock, where he ran into his old schoolmate Dr. Kemp who alerted the police and rallied the people of Port Burdock in order find and overcome Griffin. After being seemingly killed by navvies, the invisibility weared off in death, and Griffin’s corpse became visible again. However, as it turned out later, Griffin was able to make the fleeting Thomas Marvel, whom he then administered his serum and with whom he exchanged his clothes, after which Marvel was confused with Griffin by the villagers and died in his place.

    Powers:

    Griffin is just plain invisible, making people seeing through him, but still somehow able to direct enough undistorted light to his eyes to retain his full range of vision. In addition to that he learned over time that he can also make other objects temporarily invisible by touching them.

    THE WALKING MUMMY

Entombed alive and cursed to rest immobile but conscious for centuries Kharis was eventually revived three thousand years later when despoilers entered the tomb of the Princess. After accomplishing his tast to hunt down and kill all those who desecrate Ananka’s tomb he realized to his surprise that he continued to “live” and was now free to do whatever he wanted. But what does a rotting immortal do with the rest of his endless life? Well, he vowed revenge on his torturers and went on a quest for their reincarnated souls as well as any of their descendants to make them finally pay for what they’ve done to him.

    Powers:

    Despite millenia of inactivity and decay Kharis possesses magically fortified musculature and skeletal structures, granting him superhuman strength and stamina. His tissues are also reinforced through his course which makes them much harder and more resistant to conventional physical harm than those of normal humans. Also, while he’s indeed vulnerable to fire, it is just impossible for him to be killed through any physical means.

    THE NIGHTSTALKER

Born in 1468 in SighiÈ™oara/Romania (back then Hungary), Vlad IV. was the favorite son of his father and turned into a vampire at the age of 19. After his fathers demise at the hands of Jonathan Harker and Abraham van Helsing, Vlad jr. became the king of all vampires. Out for revenge on his fathers murderers he moved to the Carfax Abbey in London, England and ultimately killed van Helsing’s wife during the birth of her daughter, Abigail, who was thus born a dhampir and would later become Vlad’s greatest nemesis.

    Powers:

    Like every vampire, the Nightstalker is capable of transforming an individual into a vampire by biting them and possesses superhuman strength, speed, stamina, agility, reflexes and some sort of healing factor due to his immortality or rather being undead. He is also able to hypnotize others by gazing into their eyes and to shape shift into (sometimes human-sized) bats, rats, a wolf, and mist. Vlad is furtermore a very powerful magician who can summon and command lesser vampires, undead, packs of wild dogs, bats, and rats. But also like all vampires Vlad has a number of special vulnerabilities, including that he must ingest fresh blood in order to maintain his vitality and being highly “allergic” to silver, wood, sunlight and religious icons.

    When the Travellers arrived in Earth Zero’s London of the year 1891, they decided that it would be best if H.G. Wells would first consult his counterpart in this reality in order to obtain possible clues for their search for the Mata’Nui while the rest of the team would search for references in other places.

    But at the very moment when he reached the house of his “twin”, he was intercepted by a completely dilapidated, dirty man in odd-looking, ripped clothes, staring at him with a wild look behind even odder glowing red goggles as he began to seemingly incoherent talking to him.

    “H.G.! Oh my God, am I glad to see you here! You were right – I got it all completely wrong and now he has managed to acquire the Eye of Horus. We have to stop him from also getting the Eye of Ra, or the world as we know it will be doomed.”

    “What? What the hell are you talking about? And who are you, anyway?”

    “Don’t you recognize me? It’s me – the Walker. Wait a minute! What date is it?”

    “Today is Monday, May 4th”.

    “No, I mean, what year is it?”

    “Is this a joke?”

    “WHAT YEAR IS IT???”

    “Calm down! It’s 1891. Why?”

    “Damn it! Of course you don’t know me, we haven’t yet met in this time period. How could we anyway – I’m only born today. Is this a coincidence? Whatever, unfortunately it takes a few more years until we’ll meet for the first time. At least from my point of view.”

    “Don’t tell me you are also a time traveller!”

    “What? What do you know about time travel? You shouldn’t know anything about that for the next four years.”

    “I guess you’re confusing me with this realities H.G. Wells. Sorry to disappoint you, but I am not him. I’m from a parallel world and came here on a search for an alien race that lives hidden on this earth.”

    “Oh dear, a dimension jumper. That explains a lot. Guess I didn’t confuse you after all then. Wait! This alien race you’re talking about – are those the Mata’Nui?”

    “You know them?! That’s splendid! Then you can lead me to them – my world needs their help against a common enemy.”

    “Now it’s me who has to disappoint you. My only contact with this species was by a computer, which I have to thank that I have to carry out such confusing conversations over and over again. Long story…”

    “Well, I think I know very well how you must feel. Time travel is a complicated thing. But perhaps our meeting is no coincidence. Maybe I’ll find a pointer to the Mata’Nui if I first help you with your problem? What is that anyway – something about an Egyptian artifact?”

    “Oh, believe me you can’t help me on this matter – at least not your present self. But then again, considering the information I have now, I guess you already did help me in some way. Just not today, but rather in the future. Precisely in 25 years from now in New York to be exact. Huh, another May 4th – what are the odds? Anyway, if I understand this correctly, that will also be the first time that we meet from my point of view. Man, I hate these time travel paradoxes…”

    “Well, I guess I’ll see you in 25 years then.”

    At the “same time” on the other side of the English Channel:

    Friday, August 13, 1915 – near Munich, Bavaria (Germany)

    After his lost battle against the Monsters Society in his “fathers” former laboratory at the university of Ingolstadt in Germany, Frankenstein’s Monster had found refugee in an old abandoned abbey near Munich where he recovered from his injuries when a mysterious scruffy men in ragged clothes and with an old musket on his back entered the ruins. Hidden in a dark corner he studied the odd man who seemed to search for someting when suddenly the men turned around and stared directly at the spot where the monster was hiding.

    “You can come out now, I know you’re there.”

    “Who are you? What do you want from me?”

    “People call me “the Walker”. I’m here to help you – and ask for your help in return.”

    “You don’t know what you’re talking about. You don’t know me.”

    “Of course I do, Frank. Can I call you that? Frank? I know you don’t have a real name, but Frank somehow sounds appropriate for Frankenstein’s so called “Monster”.”

    Frank slowly stepped out from his dark corner and studied his opponent suspicious.

    “How do you know about me? Most people think I’m just a character in a novel.”

    “Well, to be honest I thought that too once. But as I had to learn the hard way, this world is stranger than most people think possible. Take me for example – did you ever think that there could be a man who travels through time to fix historical events that have gone wrong?”

    “You are a time traveler? That explains how you knew where to find me.”

    “Huh – now I’m somewhat disappointed. I didn’t think you would swallow it that easy. I’d already prepared ​​myself for lengthy explanations.”

    “Not much unlike you I have seen many strange things in the 127 years that I have now roamed this world. And what exactly is it you think you could help me with?”

    “Well, in fact I think we can help each other. After all, it is about a common enemy.”

    “I guess you’re talking about Moriarty?”

    “Bingo!”

    “Bingo?”

    “A word you’ll probably learn in about 11 years which means that you’re right. Anyway. Yes, it is Moriarty who I need your help to fight.”

    “Why?”

    “Well, unfortunately, the attainment of your father’s research documents was only a small piece of the puzzle in a much bigger scheme by Moriarty, which could mean the end of the world as we know it. If we want to save billions of lives, we have to stop him.”

    “That sounds pretty ominous. And how would this mutual aid, of which you are talking about, look like?”

    “As you may already have noticed by now, you don’t stand a chance against the combined power of Moriarty’s Monsters Society – and neither do I. But with a little help of friends? So, what do you think of joining – or rather founding – a team of adventurers?”

    “Umph. Never been a good team player.”

    “Well, then it’s time to change that. I think we should start our recruiting tour in London.”

    “Why? Who is there?”

    “Ever heard the name Van Helsing?!”

    Origin:

    Created from body parts of several corpses by the mad scientiest Viktor Frankenstein, who was obsessed with studying outdated theories of science that focused on achieving natural wonders and had developed a secret technique to imbue inanimate bodies with life, “Frank” was immediately repudiated by his “father” after his reanimation. Hopeless and saddened from rejection, the monster disappeared and spent a year living near a cottage, where he learned to speak by listening to a family living there and taught himself to read with a lost satchel of books he had discovered. After an unfortunate encounter with the family, he became afraid of people and fled to Geneva, where he approached his creator and craved that Frankenstein create for him a female companion like himself. Viktor reluctantly agreed and together they traveled to England where Viktor pretended to work on a second being on the Orkney Islands. But at the first available opportunity he betrayed his creation and fled the Island. Once again left in the lurch by his “father”, the so called monster followed Viktor back to Geneva and arrived just in time for Viktors wedding with his adoptive sister Elizabeth. But when confronted by the monster to get an explanation for his acts, Viktor used Elizabeth as a human shield and throw her in the monsters arms who accidentally broke her neck when he tryed to catch her. Horrified and mad with anger over Viktors actions the monster pursued him to the North Pole, where he found his father, nearly frozen and emaciated, dying aboard a ship that was entombed in ice. Mourning over Frankenstein’s body he vowed to kill himself on his own funeral pyre so that no others will ever know of his existence. But as he endures cold and heat much easier than normal people his suicide attempt failed and in the following decades he wandered restless the world in search of a home and people that accepted him for what he is.

    Powers:

    Frank’s physical strength and durability is enhanced to levels far beyond the human body’s natural limits and, being created through artificial means, he is effectively immortal since he is isn’t technically “alive”. He does not age beyond his current form and despite the fact that he isn’t invulnerable and can indeed be physically injured, he is also able to rapidly regenerate damaged or destroyed tissue and heal injuries such as bullet wounds and severe burns within minutes to a few hours. He can even heal a severed limb by holding it in place long enough for the damaged connecting tissue to regenerate.

    Obviously, the Walker can move forward and backward in time. He also sees possible futures, and when he detects a threat to the timeline he gets automatically pulled to the corresponding point of time in order to take steps that counters this threat. He also has the irritating, and mostly subconscious, ability to sense the presence of latent and manifested mutations in the genetic code of person’s who are in close proximity to himself and to jump-start or evolve their superhuman powers.

Serving in the French Foreign Legion during the First World War, he was badly wounded in fighting near Belloy-en-Santerre in 1916 and a few years later he was the first time confronted with supernatural forces while investigating a mysterious crypt in an ancient abandoned cemetery with his Harley Warren who died during these events. In the following years Carter had many ancounters with the supernatural world and became access to a vast, alternate dimension that can be entered either via dreams. In the Dreamlands he became a king and by passing through it he could reach other alternate realities and parallel earths, one of them being a world where a powerful alien race called “The Old Ones” lived hidden on earth for billions of years.     Solomon Kane is sombre and gloomy man of pale face and cold eyes who wandered the world of the late 16th/early 17th century with no apparent goal other than to vanquish evil in all its forms. After decades of adventures that took him from Europe to the jungles of Africa and back he found his final destiny in 1612 in colonial Massachusetts at a village called Salem when he followed a lead to the lost colony of Roanoke. Once arrived in Salem he heard the legend of a witch that lived in the nearby woods and was allegedly responsible for the vanishing of three young girls. Solomon took up the pursuit of the putative witch, and eventually led the men of Salem to a cabin deep in the woods where they encountered a young beautiful herb woman that lived alone in reclusion. The men took her to the village and after a very short trial she was declared guilty of witchcraft and sentenced to death. Although he was not really totally convinced of the guilt of the woman, Solomon watched idly by as she was finally burned at the stake. But this inaction to which he owed the curse of the burning woman who condemned him to “restlessly wander the earth to all eternity solely in the hope of redemption from his sins on the Judgment Day”. It took him just a few more decades to realize that he was now immortal…

    Powers:

    Due to the curse of the “witch”, Solomon is immortal in the sense that he is resurrected after each death by external causes. That also means that he can’t day of natural causes since he is immune to all known Earthly diseases and infections and doesn’t age beyond his current form. But that doesn’t make him invulnerable and so every lethal injury leaves a mark on him when he rises from the dead. He is also immune to any form of magic.
