Character Contest 16: Progression

We're all familiar with the way characters are "revamped" from time to time, with their original costumes and character backgrounds being radically revised to suit a more modern audience. The most classic cases came when DC took its stable of pre-existing "Golden Age" characters and ushered in a new "Silver Age":

Your challenge for this week -- and it is going to be a challenge, I readily admit that -- will to be the same. Give us two designs for the same character concept, one that was (supposedly) introduced in the Golden Age and then its modern reinterpretation. You can either post the images separately, or put them together like I did above.

You have one week, starting today and ending next Tuesday. All entries must be left as links to an image or images in the comments to this post, and all images must be 100% HeroMachine-generated. The winner will get to choose either any item he or she wants, or their caricature, put into HeroMachine 3 for all to see and love.

Good luck everyone, I look forward to seeing what you come up with!

Caption Contest 60 Winner!

I am happy to announce that the winner of Caption Contest 60 is ... Niall Mor!

The other entries that I thought were particularly good this week were:

  • Hakoon: Ok, ok, I’m sorry. You have a lovely tan.
  • Hammerknight: “I do”
  • Ben Trafford: “Jocasta? But I thought you were a -good- guy?!”
  • Danny Beaty: My head isn’t the only thing she shaved!
  • marx: I believe you about the dolphins, but really, I’ve NEVER been able to see those 3-D posters, no matter how I focus.

Those were all original and good takes that I'd not have thought of, so hats off to you guys. Extra bonus points (not currently redeemable for anything) go to Ben Trafford for "Best Comic Book In-Joke". I also really liked Halloween Jack's version of the lubricant joke, but didn't think it was appropriate for the space. Funny, though!

As the winner, Niall gets to pick either any one item or a caricature of his face to be part of HeroMachine 3's final release, so congratulations to him!

I'll also take this opportunity to note that if there's a pistol you really really wanted to go in (say, the Desert Eagle, which I still don't see making a separate slot for since there's something very very close already), winning a contest is the best way to go. So start thinkin'!

Thanks to all our entrants, and good luck with the next one, which should be posted shortly.

Caption Contest 60!

You have a mission -- replace the blank dialog in this comic book panel with your own funnitude and win the right to choose any item you like (within reason) or a caricature of your head to be included in HeroMachine 3!

That's it! You have one week -- next Tuesday I'll announce the winner right here at HeroMachine.com.

Character Contest 15 Winner

We had a great set of entries for Character Contest 15, and I want to thank everyone who took the time to put together a character. I appreciate your talent and your willingness to share your creations very much!

After the jump I'd like to present the illustrations I thought were truly exceptional, and of course the overall winner.

Character Contest 15: Knights to Remember

Call him a tank, call him a barbarian, call him a noble plate-clad defender of all that is virtuous, or just call him Bob, whatever his class or character, he's a Fighter. Spells are for weenies, guns for cowards, and faces are made to be kicked, so strap on your Man Pants and design the baddest, toughest, rootinest tootinest Fighter type character you can imagine.

That's right, it's Character Design Contest time again, kids! Come up with the best submission that matches the theme of a Fighter and you'll win everlasting fame and glory. Or at least, the option to have any item you like (within reason) or a caricature of your head included in HeroMachine 3. The rules are simple:

  1. You can enter as many times as you want, but to be eligible, you must leave your entry as a comment to this post, and include a link to view the image on a public web server somewhere (i.e. ImageShack.com, PhotoBucket.com, the UGO Forums, etc.).
  2. No PhotoShopping or other image manipulation allowed with the exception of basic cropping.
  3. You must use some version of HeroMachine for your image.

Good luck! The contest will end next Tuesday, with the winner announced on HeroMachine.com.

Caption Contest 59 Winner

The winner of Caption Contest 59 is ... Danny Beaty!

contest59-winner

You'll notice that all of the Honorable Mentions and Danny's entry as well have one thing in common -- they all consist of a statement that will immediately be followed by plate hurlage. Which makes me laugh, given the expression on her face. Speaking of which, here are those Honorable Mentions!

  • Jose Inoa: “…control? A woman’s place is in the kitchen, right Xena? Xena?”
  • Bixlord: Do a good job and I’ll let you wear shoes.
  • Mike: Dear what did I tell you about getting the red china mixed in with the white china. Now all that china behind you is pink!
  • Oquies: “You do know we have a dish washer right?”

Many thanks to all the fine entries! Danny wins either any one item of his choice (within the bounds of reason) or a caricature of his head to be included with HeroMachine 3. I still owe Danny a custom illustration as well for a previous win, hopefully I can get them all wrapped up sooner rather than later.

I'll be putting up a Character Design Contest in a bit, so be on the lookout for that and YOUR chance to win!

Caption Contest 59: Home … sweet? … home

Put on your Funny Cap boys and girls, because it's time for another edition of the HeroMachine Caption Contest! Come up with the funniest replacement dialog for this comic book panel and you'll win either any custom item you like or a caricature of your face to be included in the final version of HeroMachine 3!

This week we're going for something a little different. Instead of slavering heavily-muscled spittle-festooned uber-monsters firing all manner of projectile weapons, we have a pleasant little domestic scene:

Or is it? Who knows who's off panel speaking, or what he/she/it is saying? That's up to you! As usual, the rules are simple:

  1. Keep it clean, appropriate for a prime-time broadcast network program;
  2. Only three entries per person;
  3. All entries must be left as a comment to this post.

That's it! You have one week -- next Tuesday I'll announce the winner right here on this here spot on the intertubes.

Good luck everyone!

Character Contest 14 Winner!

Our contest this week ended up being almost more of an "environment" affair than science-fiction, which is fine considering I just released those item sets recently. Having said that, the overall winner definitely embodied the spirit of the contest and also made a totally cool looking illustration, so bonus! Read on to see the Honorable Mentions for the week and the ultimate winner.

Character Contest 14: Sci-Fi

We've done "Fantasy" as a character design contest before, so this time let's go for the other Big Daddy category: Science Fiction! Your challenge is to come up with the coolest or best science-fiction-themed character possible, whether that's an apocalyptic death-dealing cyborg or the hardbitten starship captain or the wistfully funny green alien seductress, or anything else you can come up with.

The contest will run for one week, with the winner announced next Tuesday. The person with the best design will win the option of having either their caricature or any one item of their choosing included with the final HeroMachine 3 product. Everlasting fame, how sweet is that?!

Good luck!

Caption Contest 58 Winner!

I am happy to announce that the winner of Caption Contest 58 and his choice of either his face or a custom item to be included in HeroMachine 3 is ... FishPants!

contest58-winner

I had a hard time choosing between this one and the First Runner Up:

  • TheNate: "Gas cloud near my head? Only a blundering fool would miss that."

I think they both did the best job of incorporating Mystery Ninja's line in a way that was funny and not so forced. Ultimately, I went with FishPants because he had a higher joke density -- "Confused Ninja" makes me laugh as much as the idea of this guy calling himself "Blundering Fool", possibly the greatest sidekick name ever.

Other great entries included:

  • Michael: No worries sir he’s my new sidekick, Gassy.
  • Patrick: What makes you think I ate the kryptonite laced bean dip meant for Superman?
  • Whit: Nothing to worry about, boss. The Phantom Broccoli HATES the colour red!
  • Greft: “Yes sir. It took quite a few rolls of duct tape, but the windows are sealed from a terrorist attack.”

Many thanks to everyone who entered!
