Character Contest 44 – Nature Winners

We had a huge response for Character Contest 44 - Nature, thank you all so much for the inspiring work you put into this! I had a tough time deciding on an overall winner out of the many Finalists that all had something special about them. So without further ado, here they all are, with comments on why I thought each deserved to be in the mix for the win.

If you don't see yours here, it's not that it wasn't good, I just had a lot of great ones and could only pick a handful. So keep trying, I know I speak for everyone else when I say it's a lot of fun seeing each other's work each week.

Pop Quiz Prize: Ms. Marvel

I drew the wrong version of Ms. Marvel, Carol Danvers, for Myro as his prize for winning the first Pop Quiz contest (designing a fantasy sports logo). So I did a second one, and you get to see both -- lucky you!

Character Contest 44: Nature

(Elemental contest winner "Fire Satyr" by Andre.)

I wanted to open it up a little to give you more creative freedom this time around, so your Character Design Challenge for this week is to come up with the coolest looking Nature-based character. Ideas that spring immediately to mind are druid or ranger types from fantasy games; weather-control steampunk scientists; lycanthropes or other animal-based human hybrids; elemental characters who control wind, fire, air, water, etc.; classic mythological nature spirits like dryads, fauns, satyrs, or wood nymphs; plant-control villains like Poison Ivy; and many many more that would never occur to me, I'm sure.

A character like Superman would not be a good entry because he's not tied to nature in any way. You could say that since Wonder Woman can fly on air currents she is related, but that would be incredibly lame and you would lose. Zatanna can affect nature with her magic, but that's more of a side-effect rather than the central organizing theme of the concept. Again, lame and a loser.

The Human Torch, on the other hand, would qualify, and certainly Storm from the X-Men or the Red Tornado from DC. You get the idea.

Here are the rules:

  • All entries must be in JPG or PNG form (BMPs are too big), posted to a publicly accessible website (like ImageShack, PhotoBucket, the UGO Forums, whatever);
  • Entries must be made as a comment or comments to this post, containing a link directly to the image and the character name;
  • The image cannot have been used in any previous HeroMachine character design contest -- we had an "Elemental" contest and an "Animalia" contest a while back, for instance, and I don't want repeats of stuff you already did for those;
  • Please name your files as [your name]-[character name].[file extension]. So DiCicatriz, for instance, would save his "Bayou Belle" character image as DiCicatriz-BayouBelle.png.
  • If possible, please make the link go directly to the image (like this) and not to a hosting jump page (like this). If you see "preview" or "rotate" somewhere in the link you're probably doing it wrong.
  • All entries must be in by next Monday, when I'll choose a winner, who will receive his or her choice of any item, or a portrait, to be included in the final HeroMachine 3 program.

The link location thing is really starting to be an issue as my internet connection continues to simultaneously both suck and blow, which ought to be impossible but isn't. When I have to load up the DeviantArt shell page to see your image, for instance, it takes a really long time. A couple of weeks ago it took me literally three hours to download just the first half of the entrants. I finally had to lug my wife's laptop to the town library and put them all on a flash drive. Painful. If I can just right-click on the link and save the image directly without having to load the jump page from the hosting site, at least I can queue them all up and walk away while it does its thing.

So yeah, I hate to be a hard-ass about this, but it's getting to that point. On DeviantArt, for example, there's a "Save This Image" button over on the right side of the screen, the URL that thing gives you is the one you ought to post. On PicasaWeb, you can right-click on the image and get "Copy Image Location" and again, that's what you'd want to post.

OK, enough scolding and rules, let's get creative! No limits on entries, so knock yourselves out, I'm really looking forward to this one.

Good luck and thanks in advance for sharing your imagination with the rest of us!

Caption Contest 84 Winner!

The winner of Caption Contest 84 is ... Larkin!

Other entries I thought particularly amusing were:

  • Gargoyle323: “Starfruit gives me the weirdest gas!”
  • Gargoyle323: “No matter how hard I try,I just can’t make exclamation and question marks pop up. All I get are these lame stars.”
  • Gargoyle323: “Supergirl… Wonder Woman… Black Canary… No, I get stuck being Farting Star Girl!”
  • Dudemeister: I’ll tell you what that smell is – it’s what happens when 99 cent bean burritos meet a twenty dollar bill.

Apparently I was in a Gargoyley mood.

Congratulations to Larkin, who wins his or her choice of any item, or a portrait, to be included in the final HeroMachine 3 release.

Pop Quiz 1 Winner!

Thanks to all of you who played along on this most excellent Sunday of American style smash-mouth NFL football with the "Design a Fantasy Sports Logo" Pop Quiz Contest! My fantasy team (the Gotham Dark Knights) did fairly well, and has an 11 point lead heading into Monday night's game, where my fantasy opponent has the San Francisco defense going up against my own Frank Gore. My hopes of crushing his hopes and dreams remain high, which makes me a gleeful little bald man.

There were some very funny entries, including a few team names I wish I'd thought of. To wit, I thought the Bizarro Spectators, Barsoom Jeddaks, Lorien Arrows, Boston Stranglers, and the Latverian Doombots were all fantastic teams. I might have to expand my fantasy outings next year so I can steal ... er, borrow ... one of those titles, they're just great.

When it came to the actual logos, there were severral that I thought were pretty good from Gargoyle323, Atomic Punk, Blue Blazer, Jack Zelger, and Myro:

Just like with the Kurgan, though, there can be only one, and definitely my favorite both for the team name and the actual logo illustration was Myro's "Latverian Doombots":

I love that cute little Doom hood and face on the heraldic body, that's awesome. I could totally see that on a helmet or jersey. Hell, I'd probably buy one!

So congratulations to Myro! Let me know what you'd like for your custom black and white character sketch -- what character and what they should be doing -- and I'll put it on The List.

And thanks to all who entered, this was fun! It made for a good distraction while Peyton Manning was ripping my heart out in the first half. All those weapons and he just HAS to throw touchdowns to the two guys on my fantasy opponent's team. Jerk.

Pop Quiz: Sports logos!

In honor of the Saturday "Things I Love" post I missed, we're having a pop quiz today: What does Jeff love?

The NFL!

Where do you come in?

It's the REAL pop quiz -- for today only, the best sports logo built with the HeroMachine wins a custom black and white character sketch by yours truly! It could be one (and ONLY one!) of your personal characters, or an established one, whatever you like, just like you walked up to a pro at a convention and paid for a sketch.

The rules are the same as for a regular contest, except for the time frame:

  • All entries must be left as a comment (or comments) to this post and should include the full name of the team in question (i.e. "The Gotham Dark Knights");
  • Entries must be in JPG or PNG format from any HeroMachine version (no editing in a third party program like PhotoShop, except basic cropping), posted as a link to the image on some publicly accessible web site (PhotoBucket, ImageShack, the UGO Forums, whatever);
  • The contest will end at some point tonight, when I am taking a break from my massive orgy of NFL consumption;
  • The goal is to design a logo for a fictional sports team, so you don't need to do a character wearing it, just the logo itself.

That's it, good luck everyone with our first ever one-day-only pop quiz! No limit on entries, so knock yourself out.

Character Contest 43 Winner!

Without further ado, I present first the Finalists, then the overall winner, of Caption Contest 43 - Laborer!

Come up with the funniest replacement dialog in this random comics panel and you win not only everlasting global fame, but the chance to choose any item or portrait to be included in the final HeroMachine 3 program!

Just leave your entry or entries (no limit, but be a good self-editor) as a comment (or comments) to this post by next Monday and you're good to go.

Oh, and remember to keep it clean, appropriate for a late-night broadcast television program.

Good luck everyone!

Caption Contest 83 Winner!

Lately I've been putting the Caption Contest Finalists up in visual format for you all to vote on one as the winner. But this week, I just thought one was so clearly the best, I'm going with it. Character Contest 43 – Laborer

In honor of the American holiday of "Labor Day", your character creation challenge for the week is to come up with a character who in some way incorporates the concept of a laborer, your basic person who works with their hands and tools in some ways. Ditch diggers, brick layers, construction guys, assembly line workers, the people who go out and toil away in the hot sun getting their hands dirty.

Only in this case, they do it with super powers.

Some examples from the comics would be "The Absorbing Man", who has a demolition ball and chain as his weapon, or the "Bulldozer", or even the horrible "Truk".

The rules are the same as always:

  • All entries must be submitted as a comment to this post;
  • Each entry must have a link to a publicly accessible web site (i.e. the UGO Forums, ImageShack, whatever) where the image of your character is posted;
  • The contest ends next Monday, whereupon I will choose an overall winner, who receives his or her choice of either any item they like, or a portrait, to be included in the final HeroMachine 3 version.

Good luck, everyone!
