Out of context quotes are terrifying

META: Dragon*Con 2012

I’ll be headed to Dragon*Con starting tomorrow through Monday. If any HeroMachinists will be there, let me know and maybe we can hook up for coffee or somesuch.

And when I say “hook up”, the photo is not what I meant. For the record, I am NOT the one in the bikin.

Chris Samnee's "The Mighty Thor"

Normally on Wednesdays I talk about Bad Super Hero Costumes, but today I want to take a break from negativity to show you what a top-notch redesign can do.

The artist in question is one of my absolute favorites, Chris Samnee. His use of blocks of shadow to give his compositions form calls to mind Mike Mignola, but with a cleaner and more hopeful take to it. I think that blend of stark contrasts and bright designs made him the perfect choice when Marvel decided to create a friendlier version of the classic hero in “The Mighty Thor” last year. They’ve since canceled the title, I believe, which is a real shame.

But let’s take a look at how a truly gifted and thoughtful artist can update a classic look while maintaining the essence of the character.

They don't LOOK gripped by terror

Bucky Barnes vs. Dick Grayson. Who wins?

With thanks to James Wickenden on the HeroMachine Facebook page for the suggestion, this week’s Versus matches up the two men who are (arguably) the greatest sidekicks ever to graduate into full-blown super-herodom. I give you Bucky Barnes (aka “The Winter Soldier”) versus Dick Grayson (aka “Robin”, “Nightwing”, and “Batman”):

I love that both of these men started out as sidekicks to major super hero stars, and that neither has any inherent super powers. They’re just two highly trained, extremely capable, hardened warriors with plenty of high-tech gadgets to back them up. Also, it’s DC versus Marvel, which is always a bonus!

So lay it out for us: Who do you think would win this matchup, and why?

Caption Challenge 128

It’s time for another new Caption Contest! Your challenge this week is to come up with the best caption for this comics panel:

This one is a little different in that you’re not filling in a dialog balloon, but rather coming up with a caption that might appear above or below the image. I’ll pick out some as my personal favorites to highlight in a post next Monday, and then I’ll choose one of those to bear the standard as the “Featured Creator of the Week” atop the right tool bar.

All entries must be left as a comment (or comments) to this post. Keep ‘em clean (appropriate for a late-night broadcast TV show), but most importantly, keep ‘em funny!

No limit to entries, but please, self-edit and only put up ones you genuinely think are good!

Character Design Challenge 98 Results!

Last week we challenged you to redesign lightning-themed Public Domain characters, and you knocked it out of the park once again. I’ve chosen a handful of entries as ones that I personally liked the most, but as always, this is just my own opinion. I highly encourage you to click through all the submissions in the original post to make up your own mind, then let me know if I picked wisely or poorly, and which you like as your own Top Gun.

With that, here are my personal favorites of the week:

Pop Quiz 24 Results

We had some great entries in our Rag Doll Pop Quiz, and here they are:

Those are all great, but among my very favorites were Atomic Punk, Barbario, Keric, Livewyre, Scatman, SprocketSauce, and Worf. And if I have to go with just one to put up on my wall, I’d go with … Atomic Punk!

There aren’t any crazy, out of control special effects here, just a great concept executed very well. I love the colors, the little embellishments, and just the overall look and feel of the whole design. It’s fun and cool at the same time. Great job, sir!

Congratulations to everyone who entered, you all did a wonderful job.
