Anime Talk: Ranma 1/2

This weeks "Anime Talk" will be a short review of the of 1989 anime series "Ranma 1/2".  An adaption of the of 1987 manga series of the same name and is what is considered to be a harem anime.  What is harem anime you might be asking ? In short a harem anime is basically an series with one main character, typically male that finds himself surrounded by at least three often more beautiful female characters that have romantic interests in him.

Ranma 1/2 follows the adventure of a 16 year old boy named Ranma Saotome who has been studying martial arts under the tutelage of his father from. Ranma is a highly skilled martial artist but he does have one major problem, during a training session in China Ranma and his father each accidentally fell into a magically cursed pool of water.  The result of the accidentally immersion  is the cursed waters  is that whenever Ranma comes in contact with cold water he is transformed into a girl, and needs hot water to transform back into his natural form. Ranma's father Genma Saotome is similarly cursed in such that when he comes in contact with cold water he is  transformed into a giant panda.

The series begins with the Saotome's in their alternate forms fighting each other in the streets arguing about an arranged marriage Genma made with his friend Soun Tendo to one of Soun's three daughters Akane Tendo who as fate would have it hates "boys" meaning males her age, Ranma being no exception. The entire series revolves around Ranma's desire to break the curse, while attending high school with his fiance. During the course of the series Ranma and Akane become closer while at the same time maintaining the that the both still do not care about each other. The relationship of our two love birds are further complicated by the need to keep Ranma's secret and by the fact the Ranma is pursed both in him male and female forms by many other suitors which makes Akane jealous even though she denies feelings for him.

All in all I have to say Ranma 1/2 is a fun action filled  series that keeps things light and humorous. In my opinion it is a must see Anime that is one of my personal favorites.

HM3: Female Facial Features Now Added

I've just updated HeroMachine 3 with support for three new sets of items, female versions with properly positioned and sized ears, eyebrows, and noses. Mouths and eyes already had such sets published, but until now you had to manually tinker with the others to get them to fit.

Let me know if you see any weirdness. Hopefully this will make it faster and easier to create your female characters.

As usual, you may need to clear your browser cache (note, do NOT clear Flash cookies or you'll lose your saves!) if the new options aren't immediately visible in the set selection drop down list.

Poll Position: DC vs Marvel

DC vs Marvel

This weeks poll position is a simple one, though one that is likely to be heated. I want to know which of the big two is your favorite, DC or Marvel Comics!

[polldaddy poll="7132827"]

Personally I will have to go with Marvel, though out of my top five superheroes the top three are from DC. All in all I feel that Marvel is the more believable universe so that is why I have to say "Make Mine Marvel!"

So, I just watched The Hobbit.

This one.

Yeah, I'm a bit late to the party, I guess, but I was waiting until I could see it on dvd with a good friend of mine.

I liked it. It was very much what I expected.

But I'm not really here to talk about the movie, half a year after its release. See, I was reminded of the 1989-1990 comic book adaptation by Chuck Dixon and David T. Wenzel.

Dixon has condensed the plot expertly to 133 pages over three issues. Nothing feels left out, but nothing feels rushed either. The transition from novel to comic works incredibly well, arguably better than for the movie, and it makes me a bit surprised how these sorts of adaptations are so rare.

Thorin has come to ride barrels and kick *ss. And he's seriously sick of barrels.

Wenzel's art is just beautiful. His previous work mostly consisted of children's book illustrations, and his soft colours and generally friendly style fits the narrative well, while also providing a nice contrast to elements like Gollum, the goblins and the spiders, who all look genuinely creepy.

Yep.

And not to spoil anything, things do get suitably epic towards the climax.

I highly recommend this book if you're a Tolkien- or a fantasy fan, if you're looking for a present for a child (gotta get them hooked on fantasy while they're young, you know) or if you're just looking for a pleasant bit of reading.
