Here is my go at Bad Costume day. I'm going with this version of Storm. When I think of Storm I think of a long white haired woman floating in the sky like an angel. Then they go and give her a mohawk dress her like a bad punk rocker. What can I say, I didn't like it at all. A big get well soon goes out to Kaldath, hope that you are feeling better soon.

The Secret Lair
Wasn’t that technically her original costume back in the 70/80s?
Nope. That was the costume she appeared in, at the end of the Wolverine mini by Frank Miler. It was supposed to reflect a change in character but, it fell short. VERY short.
On a side note, rumors tell us that THAT is partly the story they are filming for the next wolverine movie.
I worked on the costumes for the film X-Men, and Storm’s costume was the most hotly debated amongst the cast and crew. Some wanted the badass rocker chick look while others felt the original look would be more pleasing to the fan base. Eventually the designer came up with what you see on film which seemed to balance the practicality and theatricality needed for that character.
On a totally unrelated subject, but of interest to the commenters (and admins) the plugin that appears to be broken (hence the weird messages various people have been complaining about) appears to be the one that allowed us to edit comments (for up to 5 minutes) that is why the messages eventually disappear.
I was wondering about that… Thanks!
I won’t call this version of Storm’s costume ‘bad’, so much as ‘upsetting’…
It’s quite a change from the traditional one, but, then, she had just undergone quite a change, herself!
I’m glad to see her change back (more or less), but this one was interesting…
I don’t know, I’ve actually always liked this direction for Storm. In any case; at least design-wise there’s nothing glaringly awful about the costume, it’s just a black bodysuit, a pair of belts, and a vest with some biker boots. Nothing garish or even impractical about it really.
I suppose the ‘bad’ comes from the drastic difference to her more regal appearances, but I’d say this change serves the character. Storm is much more than the stereotypical African nature goddess. She grew up an orphan thief on the streets of Cairo, so if anything this costume speaks more to her roots than her previous incarnations. Not to mention this is around the time she lost her abilities, and if you had an empathic connection to the climate of the entire planet suddenly severed wouldn’t you feel like an entirely different person? In need of a change?
I’ll give that the mohawk may be a bit excessive, but she pulls it off. Besides, I’ve never understood why a Kenyan super-hero had such straight billowy hair (especially when the white hair is said to specifically come from her Kenyan heritage). I don’t think they had hair straighteners in the Serengeti…
That’s cool that you worked on the costumes.
I really think the reason why I think it is bad, is because of the mohawk. I like girls with long beautiful female hair cuts, I don’t really like boy hair cuts on girls.
I actually agree with you on this one, there is nothing WRONG with this costume, I think that this was a time when comics in general were DABBLING with the “punk” look, without knowing what it meant to/for the characters.
I think I saw something like this (minus the belts)
on Faith from Buffy TVS, and even if I am wrong, I think this outfit would fit Faith better then Storm
Being a casual X-Men observer, I thought the costume achieved that effect. Just wish Halle Berry could have done the same.
I could think of far worse costumes (90s Scarlet Spider comes to mind) than Storm’s punk look. I actually like it. Plus she looks good with the mohawk hairdo.
Okay, so I didn’t pick the best one to go with for my first Bad Costume post.
I quite like the Storm-punk costume, but I can see how it might aggravate people who liked the original look. It is quite a change, and perhaps (strangely) a little too generic?
Can I nominate a bad super costume while I’m here? I was browsing the realms of minor villains and heroes on comic vine (always a source of inspiration) and came across Vertigo. These days she’s got a (reasonably fetching) spray-on costume of green and white circles. Back in the day, though, there was this..

She’s supposed to disorientate her opponents, not appall them. Was that colour scheme ever OK, even back in the 80s?
I’m hoping Kaldath feels better by next week, because he is better at the bad costumes then me. But we are always open for suggestion. Thank.
Actually, I’d like to thank you for taking over for this during Kaldath’s illness, Hammerknight. It might not have been the worst costume out there, but at the time, it was considered pretty controversial.
In her defense, Storm had lost her powers around the same time, so the traditional flowing-hair-and-cape look for her would be fairly impractical. But, it doesn’t really say “Storm’ to me.
Interestingly, Paul Smith who was doing pencils on X-Men at the time said that the new look was “a pretty bad joke gone too far” afterwards, having said that when it was decided that Storm would be changing her look, he took it to the furthest extreme possible.
Stil, this mostly rates a “meh” from me.
I think the punk Storm is cool, but not what I think of when I think Storm. My thaught is I think we had to have a contrat to Dazzler the Disco Queen!
It’s really the mohawk that does it: that hairstyle simply CANNOT be pulled off tastefully. The rest of it isn’t so bad, really. If you simply pair the outfit with a better hairstyle, like in the movie, it looks perfectly OK, and very 80’s.
I know this one more as post apocaylpse Storm – from the X Men animated series’ days of futures past adaptation
So who knows; with that being the basis of First Class 2, and the current trend of bringing back the original cast – Halle Berry might be able to play rocker Storm afterall
I am still feeling mighty Retched truth be told however I should be able to post next week, in fact I already have something picked out for the bad costume, now I just need think up a Verses for next week also! Any suggestion on Verses of bad costumes are always welcome, either drop me a PM in the forum or shot me an email : Kaldath@gmail.com
Even though I’m not much for the X-Men, I agree that this look for Storm isn’t very good. Not bad, just that there’s something about it all that doesn’t quite work.
Worf, thanks for pointing that out (and to Kaldath for forwarding it to me). I checked on the plugin and it looks like they were acquired by another company. I couldn’t figure out how to update it to work with WordPress 3.5, which I am assuming is where the problem came from, so unfortunately for now I’ve had to disable it. I hope they’ll get it updated soon and I can turn it back on.
Ok I emailed Jeff with this information and he has disabled that plugin until there is an updated version of it.
Close, but not quite. It’s actually from Uncanny #173 by Paul Smith. At the end of the Wolverine mini she still has long hair. But, the issue it’s from is a continuation of the story from Wolverine, so your kinda right.
As for the costume itself, it was supposed to represent a new attitude for Storm. This was after when Cyclops was taking a leave of absence, and Storm was the new leader. And, as much as I don’t like Storm and I’m not a fan of her replacing Cyclops, I will say that she needed a new look to help define her in that new role. And as others have said, shortly after this debuted the rest of the team was kinda doing the punk look too. So, I’ll support as a bad costume just because I hate Storm, even thought it’s not terrible. 🙂
Yep, I remember that story! It was one of their better episodes, I think.
I agree. Mohawks are just as bad as mullets. I’m glad they decided to give her powers back and changed her appearance back to the design we all love
gotta say you are way off on this one. this is probly my fav look on her besides her original. you want bad storm costumes? check out the joe maderiua designed purple one.
You mean this one?

Reverse 90’s mullet for the lose. Also THIGH SLITS for whatever reason. You think somebody who generates intense cold on a regular basis would want to cover up a bit… Ugh. Joe Mad should stick to video-games.
Gah! Mis ojos! Mis ojos!
Also she had just beaten Callisto for the leadership of the Morlocks at the time. I have to say I liked this costume and it worked well with developing the character to a strong lead. If you looked at group pics before and after the change, it gave the X-men more of an edge. And that was the whole point was to make them outcasts, right? Mutants were hated and no one liked a dirty mutie.
@ Hammerknight – I think you might have stumbled onto a new topic here. Instead of just a “bad” costume, you could have “controversial” costume where you will get people you will critique or defend the choices you have made. Peace!
@ams, that is a good idea, instead of trying to find a “bad” costume I can just pick a character and post it to get the likes and dislikes of the character. I tried a movie like/dislike and it worked good, but I think a character one would be better. I could pick comic book version, movie version, etc. Thanks.
I actually like this costume as depicted by the second picture. The thigh slits are actually design elements in that one.
As for Punk Storm this is more about the image reflecting the story line. I don’t mind it to tell the truth.
