For further Watch reading

With a tip-o-the-hat to (of all things) Radley Balko's libertarian "The Agitator", here's a great list of other comic series you might like if you enjoyed "Watchmen".

Poll Position: The Golden Age of super-hero films

You can make a pretty good case that the 2000's have been the Golden Age of the super-hero film, culminating with the most recent trio of "Dark Knight", "Iron Man", and now "Watchmen" (which, even if you hate it, is still a top-tier Hollywood production). Super-hero movies have finally caught up to super-hero comics, becoming focused on adult characters in adult situations (in the "grown up" sense of the word, not the "Hi I'm the pizza delivery guy and WOW are you naked!" sense), dealing with serious real-world issues. While being dressed in spandex.

Which brings us to this week's Poll Position:

Who Watches the Watchmen? I do.

I have literally just walked in the door after seeing "Watchmen" at the local theatrical establishment and I have a report for you, the loyal viewing public. Both of you. And the report is:

It's good. Very good. The short version is, this was a good psychological super-hero movie, like "Dark Knight" without all the uplifting stuff.

The Good: Excellent production values, solid if unspectacular acting, and an entertaining way to spend almost three hours.

The Bad: Adrian Veidt is way too skinny and weak-chinned, and the script is pretty superficial, not leaving a lot of room for deep thinking afterwards.

The Ugly: The septuagenarian audience surrounding me, all hacking up a lung at the same time. The oxygen tank to iPhone ratio was way too high for comfort, but on the plus side there weren't any children in the theater. Diapers, yes, children no.

More after the jump.

"Watchmen" now a Saturday Morning cartoon!

With many thanks to Runt82, I can't clap loudly enough for this amazing take on "Watchmen", coming soon to the small screen from DC Animation. Click on the big "Play Movie" link to launch it, but be sure to have your drool bucket handy because it is pure awesomeness. I hope "Bubastis Bites", the super-cool replacement for "Scooby Snacks", make it to my store soon.

I do plan on taking in the actual film tomorrow as soon as I can slip away, but in the meantime this scratches the itch nicely. Hope you enjoy it!

HM3: Widescreen

I am happy to announce that I've gotten the "widescreen" or "character preview" mode working in HeroMachine 3! Here's a screen capture of a character in progress in the regular viewing mode:

And here is the same character with "widescreen" mode activated:

Thanks to everyone who kept reminding me about this feature, it's actually pretty neat now that I see it in action.

HM3: I'm ready for my close-up, Mr. DeMill

I wanted to quickly highlight the "portrait view" feature of HM3. I thought it might be handy to be able to get a closer-up view of the head and shoulders of the character, like you'd see on most RPG sheets. So here's a quickie I threw together just to illustrate what that looks like:

At another suggestion from Kaldath, I have separate arm items turned so you can see the inside of the arm instead of the outside. This is to resolve the problem where some of the new hand positions just wouldn't be anatomically possible with the arm in the default pose.

Anyway, there you have it. I'll also still work on a "fullscreen" type of mode where all the controls get removed and you just have the character filling the whole area, so you can see those bits that might be chopped off by the edge of the screen.
