HM3: Widescreen

I am happy to announce that I've gotten the "widescreen" or "character preview" mode working in HeroMachine 3! Here's a screen capture of a character in progress in the regular viewing mode:

And here is the same character with "widescreen" mode activated:

Thanks to everyone who kept reminding me about this feature, it's actually pretty neat now that I see it in action.

Nice work, Jeff. I look forward to the next update for the widescreen mode. I’m waiting for the post that sames that it actually works. I don’t know if it’s fully functional since everthing is a work in progress. I can see that the mode opens up, but will it continue to do so when the picture is saved or will everything still be cut off because of some glitch?

  3. Jeff Hebert says:

I’ll get the Save as JPG thing working properly by launch, no worries.

    Cool.

Is good to know that all those mutilated items are in the past and that such tragedies will not occur again.

    Me likey. Me likey lots.

  6. Timespike says:

    Wow.

I’m chomping at the bit for this thing. Can’t wait. πŸ™‚

  7. The Imp says:

Thank God! No more cut-off chain guns or wings. πŸ˜€

Oh, a related question: are you going to have HM3 available for download like you did for HM2?

  8. Kaldath says:

Imp that question was brought up in one of the other update, Jeff needs to talk to UGO about it.

  9. Niall Mor says:

Jeff, looks like that’s gonna be 37 different flavors of awesome.

Question: What kind of layering or duping options will there be? I’m thinking specifically of insignia. As it is now, a character can have text, a geometric shape, or some other kind of symbol, but not more than one kind. I’d like to see the ability to place a text letter inside a shape–to put, say, an S inside a diamond shaped insignia, in the case of a VERY FAMOUS superhero who shall here remain nameless πŸ™‚

    Anything like that?

  10. Jeff Hebert says:

@Niall: Yes, you’ll be able to have as many items in each slot as you like.

For example, let’s say the “Insignia” slot has a set of items named “Tech” with 10 items and another set of items named “Letters” with 20 items. You could have all 30 Insignia items loaded at once. Or you could have one of those 30 Insignia items loaded a hundred times.

You can have as many of each item as you want loaded at once. You can transform every one of them however you want.

In short, yes, you could have a geometric shape with a letter jammed into it if you want. Assuming I have the right shape and the right letter available as items.

    Spiritech-Zero will fly again!
I also like how I can swing the arms around a bit to show my hero wielding his staff with two hands, AND the entire frame to simulate flight. AWESOME.

  12. Scorpidius says:

Jeff, perfect!!! This is what I have been waiting for!!

Now my warriors can have dirty great big weapons!!!

    Excellent work!

Jeff, that’s cool news on the layering features. Will HM 3 have texture options? One of the things I like about Hero-O-Matic is the ability to shade items in order to create the illusion of texture–metallic or plastic, for example. I know you can do this to a certain extent already in HM 2.5, but I’d like to see this capability expanded and improved.

Any idea of a launch date for the beta version? I’m looking forward to this!

  14. Jeff Hebert says:

I don’t know about shading, I still can’t quite figure out how he’s done that. But yes, just like in the minis, textures will be an option.

  15. Alan says:

Awesome job, and wait until this is FINALLY RELEASED!
    So we can play!!!

  16. J says:

Awesome. Looks really good. This is especially good if you are going to have a musclebound “Brute” pose. There was never enough room in version 2 for those guys.

  17. Danny Beaty says:

@Jeff: I’m looking forward to the beta version of “HM3”. When will the complete version be available?

  18. Jeff Hebert says:

I’m terrible with timelines Danny. The early, not-all-slots-filled beta might be ready for public viewing this week. As for the full release, I just don’t know.

  19. Alan says:

Hey, Jeff, I was wondering, can you like change the way armor and equipment goes on your character? Or will it be the same as the other minis and HMs? Its not bad, but I’m just wondering.

Also, Jeff, do you have an estimated guess of when you’ll release this?

  20. Danny Beaty says:

    @Jeff: Okay. Thanks!

  21. violodion says:

Quite the nifty feature, widescreen is. May just be me, but still getting cut off wings. “Save As JPG” saves standard sized, not widescreen which is to say cut-off format.
