What Were They Thinking?: Actually, It’s Damn Stupid

Rarely here on What Were They Thinking? (the place where we take a look at the stupidest, most ill-advised things in all of comic book history) am I actually lost for words about a subject we cover. I've managed to find things to say about Marvel running rape storylines with both victim blaming and the victim falling for the rapist, Frank Miller turning Batman into a child abuser and the Elongated Man into a viagra salesman, and I managed to talk about The Widening Gyre. But this week, I'm exactly sure what I'm going to say, purely because the sheer level of "WHAT THE ACTUAL" is so far off the charts. And surprisingly, we aren't talking about Marvel. Nope, it is back to DC we turn for this week, as we take a look at Hemo-Goblin.

Caption Contest #95 Results

Last week I asked you guys to come up with the best replacement dialogue for this random comics panel:

And my top 5 are:

Drinkfluid

Franklin: When I signed up for Aperture’s child testing program, I just wanted to make faces at the cameras.

Val: There he goes again…

HerrD

Franklin: We’re gonna play basketball, right? That’s what the numbers are for?

Val: I’m not playing ‘skins,’ Franklin.

CantDraw

Franklin: I can change reality.

Val: I wish you’d change your face.

Treasure Hunter

Franklin: Do you think I’ll get my own action figure line?

Val: That would give my dog something new to play with.

AMS

Franklin: And now, I will do my next impression….

Val: If I was old enough to vote, this wouldn’t have happened….

But, in time honoured tradition, there can only be one winner and that winner is....

Why is Lex Luthor Superman’s Antithesis?

While discussing the "Wonder Woman" movie this weekend (it's awesome, go see it if you haven't already!), I started thinking about how DC organizes its heroes and villains into duos of opposites.

So Batman, the champion of justice, is opposed by The Joker, the champion of random meaninglessness. There can be no justice in a world where fate is usurped by chaos.

Wonder Woman, the champion of peace and all that is noble in humanity, is opposed by Ares, the god of war who believes all humans are evil and worthless.

Which brings me to Superman, and for the life of me I can't quite put my finger on why Lex Luthor is his opposite.

So I'm asking you -- what's your best explanation for why Lex is Superman's antithesis?

Character Design Challenge #325 – RPG Character Classes: Round 3 – Rogues

Time for Round 3! Your CDC is to create a member of the Rogue Class. This is the group that includes thieves, assassins, and ninjas among others.

Once again, a brief written description of the world of your RPG is an entry requirement.

Rules for posts, contests, and challenges: Original characters only, no copyrighted characters, no characters based on copyrighted characters, no characters based on RPG’s or other games. The characters must be your own design and not based on any character that might be copyrighted in any way. Please keep all submissions PG13. I have the right to delete any post that I believe crosses this line without warning. Only post characters that have been created solely using Hero Machine, and that you know for certain have never been entered in a contest before. If you aren’t certain, don’t enter it, because I’m not going to go back through all of the contests and check.

All entries must be in JPG or PNG form (BMPs are too big), posted to a publicly accessible website (like the HeroMachine :,ImageShackPhotoBucket, or whatever);

  • Entries must be made as a comment or comments to this post, containing a link directly to the image and the character name;
  • Please name your filesas [your name]-[character name].[file extension] before you upload it. So DiCicatriz, for instance, would save his “Bayou Belle” character image as DiCicatriz-BayouBelle.png.

Please make the link go directly to the image (like this) and not to a hosting jump page (like this).

This contest will close on Sunday, June 11th at 9:00am Eastern.

Wonder Woman Spoiler Free Review

Hey everyone! I’m here with a review for you for a movie that I was really excited but also really nervous for: Wonder Woman. We finally get to see the third member of the DC Trinity get their own live action film, although the 2009 animated movie is also excellent and you should definitely check it out as well. This is also the first female-fronted superhero movie since Elektra, which I only saw part of and found really boring, so this has been a long time coming. I’ve said before that this was my last chance for the DCEU, after the crushing disappointment of Batman vs Superman and the somewhat enjoyable but horribly disjointed mess that was Suicide Squad. If this wasn’t good then Justice League was off the table and I was done being disappointed again and again with characters I’d loved since childhood. But the early buzz was good and even though I avoided reviews of any kind, I was starting to feel a bit better going into this film, and well…

What Were They Thinking?: A Boat-Load Of Trouble

Now, I feel I should start this weeks What Were They Thinking? (the place where we take a look at the stupidest, most ill-advised things in all of comic book history) with a caviat. We are talking about a single character this week and not a very long lived one either, with all of this characters appearances taking place in the 1940's. As I am sure everyone is aware, attitudes in the 1940's were quite different to what they are now and that does go some way to explaining why this character is so terrible. However, I am still going to talk about it, because we are not talking about some jingoistic war-time anti-Japanese propaganda (though that is unacceptable as well) or any of the numerous Nazi villains, those are somewhat understandable and, in context of the time, somewhat excusable. This character though, is not. And it happened with all the right intentions as well, which makes it even worse. So, this week, we're going to talk about Fawcett Comics and how they sunk their own Steamboat.

Get Out Spoiler Free Review

Hey everyone! I was supposed to have this review up over the weekend, but unfortunately the weekend turned out to be pretty rough (anxiety sucks). On the plus side, things have calmed down again. Anyways, we rented a movie the other day that’s gotten a lot of buzz and we wanted to see it for ourselves. That movie of course is Get Out, the directorial debut of Jordan Peele and his foray into the world of the horror film. As usual, there are no spoilers here. So, let’s get started!
