The List: Top 10 Greatest Alien Races In Fiction

What is “Greatness”? Well, when talking about Popular Culture, you have to judge it on the impact the subject in question has had on our collective mind-set. When you look at the Greatest Musical Artists of All Time, you are more than likely going to see Elvis Presley, The Beatles and Michael Jackson on the list. Likewise with films, you’re going to see Casablanca, Gone With The Wind and The Godfather. Whether you like them or not, they have made a huge impression. But then you also have the subjective side to the argument, the placement. Who actually is better, Elvis or The Beatles? Yes, you could answer that by looking at stuff like sales, but you can’t quantify a persons reaction to the music. And that is the key factor.

So how to select the greatest alien race in fiction? Do you, a) set out a strict list of criteria that must be met in order to qualify something that is invariably subjective? Or do you b) just let people go with their instincts? Well, we went with the later and now we have our list. Close runners up include, The Flood from the Halo franchise, the Saiyans from the Dragonball franchise, the Kryptonians of DC and the Martians from War Of The Worlds.

Doctor Strange Review (Spoiler Free!)

screen_shot_2016-07-15_at_3-40-37_am_3

Alright folks, we’ve been talking a lot of trailers lately, so I think it’s about time we talked about an actual movie. Luckily for us we had a new one open this weekend that I had a chance to check out. So let’s get right to it! We’re keeping things spoiler-free here, so read on without fear. I will also be writing a spoiler-heavy review elsewhere and I’ll leave a link for anyone who wants to read that as well once it’s live.

What (Are) They Thinking: No More Clone Conspiracies

So, as I’m sure you all know by now, here on What Were They Thinking, we take a look at the stupidest, most ill-advised things from comic book history and we make fun of their idiocy. Some of the things we cover aren’t exactly the most comfortable of subjects but they get covered because of the ridiculousness of it all. I usually cover the stuff that when I find out about it makes me laugh and say “I can’t believe they actually did that!” And I do that because I love comics, I love the characters and I love the stories.

However, this week we are covering something that I am legitimately angry about. And of course it would be something Marvel have done because gosh darn it aren’t they the absolute best at being the worst sometimes. So, buckle up ladies and gentlemen, JR is about to go off on a rant about the current Spider-Man crossover, Dead No More: The Clone Conspiracy.

Poll Position: Greatest Robots/ Androids In Film And TV

Robots have long been a staple of Science Fiction, even back at the dawn of the genre when Isaac Asimov coined the term from the Slavic word for worker. They’ve become somewhat of a cliché, either naively misunderstanding human emotions or trying to keep us safe by enslaving all of humanity. And of course, nowhere is their presence more noticeable than on the screen, be it big or small. But which robot is the best? That’s our question for the week. As per usual, I’ve provided 10 examples to start you off and you can add your own suggestions. Please bear in mind that we are only looking at robots (so fully mechanical automatons created by an organic race for a specific task) or androids (full mechanical automatons given a human like external skin to better blend in with living beings), rather than cyborgs (living beings with mechanical prostheses).

William A. Peterson: I TOLD J’onn that I was the better detective… but he just wouldn’t listen.

Calvary Red: Now I’ll just tell the kid it was Tony Zucco.

DiCicatriz: Did you see the size of that spider? This was the most logical course of action.

goku69: Date night went smoothly.

MurrImAButterfly: I am never letting Deadpool fight Joker for me again…

And the winner is…

The List: Top 10 Greatest Animated Superhero TV Shows Of All Time

It seems that you guys prefer animated superheroes to live-action ones, as this poll got 20% more votes than the previous poll. Or maybe it’s just that there have been more superhero ‘toons? Either way, we’ve got our 10, so let’s get to it.

Halloween Special- Scary and Creepy Moments in Non-Horror Games

halloween-banner

Happy Halloween! In honor of my favorite holiday of the year, I thought I’d look at something in tune with the season. In gaming, there are a great many horror games, but even non-horror games can have scary or creepy moments. So let’s pay tribute to some of those today. Remember, I’m talking non-horror games, so no Resident Evil, no Silent Hill, no Dead Space, nothing like that. I’ve also left off Bioshock, as while not exclusively a horror game, has a lot of the same elements of one (man, getting down to Rapture and having a splicer scream and claw trying to get at you in your bathysphere… eep.). Some spoilers, too, as I can’t really talk about stuff that happens in-game without them. I’m not limiting myself to one per game, either, as some games have multiple instances of creepiness.
