Character Design Contest ♯106 (TGT- Fantasy) Winner

We finally had a close contest this week, for the first time this year. The top two were within a couple of votes all week (at one point it looked like it could end in a draw). However, our winner eventually managed to sneak ahead and take the win comfortably. And that winner is Linea24 for her A Faeries First Steps into the Sky piece. Congrats Linea and well done to everyone who entered.

I’m with Robin on this one

Open Critique Day #12

Okay, I'm really sorry that this was late again. I had a busy plate this week.

By the way guys, please don't be afraid to post something. This is something that requires (in fact, it's pretty much all) audience participation.

As for how this goes, you post a work of yours, finished or WIP (aka work in process, for those who are new to abbreviations), and then others give you critiques on your work.  I do not mind if you post the occasional non-HM picture or piece of writing. Just make sure that you only post pictures that are your own design and not any that copyrighted or based off of copyrighted characters.

Also, again, if you post a work, it is highly recommended that you also give someone else a critique.

Character Of The Week: Candruth- Portrait

Yep, another Candruth one. But this time I'm not actually going to talk about it, and not because I've talked at length about Candruth's shading ability multiple times now. But instead Candruth quite nicely did a time-lapse video of the shading process for this picture, which I think everyone should see. Pay close attention kiddies, you're about to learn a few things.

Character Design Contest ♯107- Vehicles

Ok guys, this week I want you to create some form of powered transport system (i.e. no ridden animals). My only rule is, no space-craft (that's a contest for another time), but you can do any terrestrial transport you can think of otherwise. Oh, and just to make it a bit more interesting, you know the vehicles section in the companions category? Yeah, you can't use it, except for minor parts (i.e. wheels). Have fun.

As per usual, no limits on entries this week and the contest will close at midnight Saturday (blog time). Please read the contest rules before entering, have fun and good luck.

Rules for posts, contests, and challenges that I am hosting: Original characters only, no copyrighted characters, no characters based on copyrighted characters, no characters based on RPG’s or other games. The characters must be your own design and not based on any character that might be copyrighted in any way. I have the right to delete any post that I believe crosses this line without warnings. Only post pictures and images that you have either created for this contest specifically or you know for certain have never been entered to a contest before. If you aren’t certain, don’t enter it, because I’m not going to go back through all of the contests and check.

Character Design Contest ♯105 (Cyborgs)- Winner

Welp, no surprises who won this week. It was CantDraw for his excellent Headcase Mermaid design. So congrats CD, and well done to everyone else who entered.

Character Of The Week: Viper- Artillery

Sometimes, the pics I feature in these posts don't jump out at me first time round and I have to go back and look through galleries again to find something. It's not because there's anything wrong with them, it's just you sometimes have to take that second look to truly appreciate some things. Things like this weeks COTW, for example.

I think the reason I only really looked at this one properly second time round was because of the fact that it was only uploaded as an attachment to the post on Vipers forum thread, so the picture size was smaller than it really needed to be for the design to really come across properly. But when I did view it in full size, there was something special going on.

Let's start off with the colour scheme, which is…. vibrant, yeah, that's a good word. You have a lovely layering effect with the colours on the costume (much like with DeleriousAl's picture last week), where you have two foreground colours that do most of the work, being eye-catching and bright (which they are a lot of both) and then you have the calmer, more grown up and refined background colours, which hold the whole thing down. Think of it like a band, the black and white aspects are like the drums and bass, providing the rhythm/ backdrop for the singer and guitarist (the orange and green aspects) to really shine. If you took them away it would be a complete mess, with two star aspects vying for attention and clashing horribly, but with them there, it's a tight and streamlined outfit that works well together.

The fantastic colour scheme is then further bolstered by some pretty damn fine shading. It is really hard to get highlighting with white to work, but it does here, probably because it is mixed with colour highlighting, white for the green and white parts, yellow/ golden orange for the orange and grey/ silver for the black. It just mixes well. I also light the attention Viper has put into the shading, which you can see on the shoulders, the slight highlight around the rim of the neck and the dark orange shading on the arm, all of which make the character really pop off the screen.

Finally, we have a bit of an oddity. The body shape of the character is very disproportionate. I don't know if the Bruce Timm style male body was used at all, but that's the vibe I'm getting. The shoulders are far to wide, the legs are tiny compared to the arms and the head is massive. It's wonderful. It's cartoonish, outlandish and if you add the vibrant colour-scheme and the bright highlighting, it just makes the character seem special. I like it.

Alright, guys! It's time for another Open Critique Day!
