I’m Still Around

I just wanted to stop by and let you all know I am still around and doing well. I know I haven’t written anything in a long time, I have a lot of things going on right now so that combined with a  severe case of writers block has kept my  participation on the site as simply a reader! But you are all in the more then  capable hands of Jr, melmo44, and djuby which are all better writers the  I ever was! Good work guys!! I’ll see if I can get past this writers block and get some Anime Talk and or Kaldath’s Corners up in the near future.

Character Design Challenge #319 – Masterworks – Results

Two Machiners entered this week’s CDC and WOW is all I have to say! The challenge was ti recreate a section from a famous Seurat painting,

Christi S. captured the texture and sense of shadow and light of the original,

While HerrD emphasized Seurat’s use of pointilism in his entry.

So to the win…

I always said I would never end a CDC in a tie, but this week  I cannot determine a winner.  Both entries address the challenge beautifully and effectively. In the past, when two pieces are very close, I would break the tie based on which piece I could see competing for CDC of the Year, and this week I think both are worthy.

So for the first, and possibly the last time we have a draw. Beautiful work by tiy both, and thanks for entering.

What Were They Thinking?: Ultimate Stupidity

Here on What Were They Thinking we like to look at the stupidest, most ill-advised things in all of comic book history. And, as you might expect, cross-overs are always a good place to look for this kind of behaviour. They are the home of such “classics” as the reality punch, two year long clone conspiracies and wars between superhero teams. But which cross-over is the worst of all time? That is a hard question to answer, but I think we can all agree that the title would have to go to Marvel. I mean, they are the people responsible for Civil War, Avengers vs. X-Men and the subject of todays missive, the story which may just take the title of worst cross-over. I am, of course, talking about this…

Dr. Malcolm Returns to the Park!

As I may have hinted before several times, Jurassic Park is a big deal in our house. As in, my other half is currently writing up scripts for videos because it’s the 20th anniversary of The Lost World this year kind of important. So naturally it didn’t take us long to hear word going around last night that Jeff Goldblum, aka Dr. Ian Malcolm, was set to return to the franchise. Given the nature of the Internet, we waited to see some further confirmation of this before reporting. And….

Caption Contest #92 Results

Ok guys, last week I asked you all to come up with the best replacement dialogue for this here panel:

And our top 5 are:

The Atomic Punk: Bishop to White Queen 7-11. Seriously, I don’t know how to play this game.

Treasure Hunter: Dying in order to stay out of XMen 3? Classy move!

Rekulhs Nathe: No, no, no don’t move there, Ugg! No wonder Jean left you!

HerrD: Mine has the kung fu action thingy on the back!

Calvary Red: I finished my character sheet. I have all the powers of the X-Men, and my mouth ISN’T sown shut.

But of course there can only be one winner and that person is…

Trailers of the Week

Hey everyone, coming at you with some new trailers and stuff this week! April’s been a bit thin on films we wanted to see, other than Colossal, which isn’t playing near us, but there were a few trailers this week that I wanted to talk about. Also, at the end I’m going to show off something I picked up yesterday that I’ve been meaning to get my hands on since its release. So, without further ado, let’s get to it.

Character Design Challenge #319 – Masterworks.

A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte by Georges Seurat.

Your challenge this week is to use HeroMachine to recreate a portion of this painting. There is no limit on number of entries.

Rules for posts, contests, and challenges: Original characters only, no copyrighted characters, no characters based on copyrighted characters, no characters based on RPG’s or other games. The characters must be your own design and not based on any character that might be copyrighted in any way. I have the right to delete any post that I believe crosses this line without warning. Only post characters that have been created solely using Hero Machine, and that you know for certain have never been entered in a contest before. If you aren’t certain, don’t enter it, because I’m not going to go back through all of the contests and check.

All entries must be in JPG or PNG form (BMPs are too big), posted to a publicly accessible website (like the HeroMachine :,ImageShackPhotoBucket, or whatever);

  • Entries must be made as a comment or comments to this post, containing a link directly to the image and the character name;
  • Please name your filesas [your name]-[character name].[file extension] before you upload it. So DiCicatriz, for instance, would save his “Bayou Belle” character image as DiCicatriz-BayouBelle.png.

Please make the link go directly to the image (like this) and not to a hosting jump page (like this).

This contest will close on Sunday, April 30th at 9:00am Eastern.

Character Design Challenge #318 – Classic With A Twist – Results

The winner of this week’s CDC is James Knight.

The approach taken to the body was restrained and thoughtful with just enough detail to be effective, while the facial expression is brilliantly composed.

Please join me in congratulating James on the win.

Well done you!

What Were They Thinking?: The Cheesecake Factory

Ok, to kick off this weeks What Were They Thinking? (the place where we look at all of the stupidest, most ill-advised things in all of comics history) I’d like to take some time out of the sarcasm and semi-mock-outrage to be a dictionary, and todays word of the day is Cheesecake. So what does the dictionary have to say about the word cheesecake? Well, cheesecake is a noun, the name of a type of cake that has a firm custardlike texture, that is made with cheese (usually cream or cottage cheese, sometimes both) and sometimes topped with a jamlike fruit mixture. I, personally, adore cheesecake, it’s my favourite desert. However, there is a more pertinent definition of cheesecake, which is also in the dictionary. This definition is the informal definition, used to describe artwork (originally photographs but now also drawn artwork as well) featuring scantily clothed attractive women, also referred to as “leg art”.

So, with the definitions part out of the way, lets move on to the main subject of todays missive shall we. Now, when talking about cheesecake in comics two things should come to mind immediately. Firstly, the 90’s and secondly, Image Comics, because the 90’s was an era famous for style over substance and Image was the most pervasive perveyor of such comics, so who else do you think we’d be talking about when we’re talking about cheesecake (apart from Marvel, but we’ll get to them at some other point). So, out of all of the cheesecake Image sold in the 90’s, what to start with, oh what to start with? Well, let’s start at the event (because it was the 90’s, of course there had to be an event centred around cheesecake) known only as EXTREME BABEWATCH! And no, I am not joking. And it gets better…
