What Were They Thinking?: It’s a bit Odd, y’see

You know, here on What Were They Thinking? (the place where we take a look at all of the stupidest, most ill-advised things in the history of comics), there are some storylines that we cover that are generally good ideas let down by stupid descisions, like including a rape and a suicide and victim blaming in West Coast Avengers: Lost In Space and Time, or the backstage feuds that cause the Hobgoblin saga to go off the rails. Other times there are storylines that are just terrible because the people involved couldn’t do any better, such as the Image Babwatch crossover. And of course there are those times that see creators who appear to have near limitless talent (like Chris Claremount or Frank Miller) just go mental, and you end up with Whom Gods Destroy or Holy Terror. And then you have this:

Breaking News: Deadpool Set For Adult Oriented Animated Series

Marvel have just announced on their news feed that FXX (the 21st Century Fox owned network) are set to make an action-comedy animated series starring the Merc With The Mouth aimed at adult audiences. Both Marvel Studios and ABC are working on the series alongside 21st Century Fox with Jeph Loeb and Donald GLover working as Executive Producer and showrunner espectively. 10 episodes have been ordered with no release date given as yet.

So, Deadpool doing adult oriented action-comedy animation. I’m hoping it’s gonna be kinda like Archer but even more irreverant and with more Chimichanga’s. That would be nice.

Character Design Challenge #321 – The Doctor Will See You Now

Your challenge this week is to use HeroMachine to create one of the animal/human hybrids known as the Beast Folk from The Island of Doctor Moreau. I have included a list below for reference.

  • Edward Prendick– The narrator and protagonist.
  • Moreau– A vivisectionist who has fled upon his experiments being exposed and has moved to a remote island in the Pacific to pursue his research of perfecting his Beast Folk.
  • Montgomery– Dr. Moreau’s assistant and Prendick’s rescuer. A medical doctor who enjoyed a measure of happiness in England. An alcoholic who feels some sympathy for the Beast Folk.
  • Beast Folk– Animals which Moreau has experimented upon, giving them human traits via vivisection for which the surgery is extremely painful. They include:

The Dark Tower Finally Releases a Trailer!

Hey everyone, here with a very special bit of news! The film adaptation of The Dark Tower has finally released a trailer! And of course it had to do so while I was out of town for a couple of days and didn’t have time to do a proper review for it (although a post about what we did while we were gone is also forthcoming…). So now that we’re home again and work is done for the week, let’s check out our first look at The Dark Tower.

Honourable mention this week goes to Calvary Red. The use of simple shapes and clean lines is really well done.

And the win goes to…

What Were They Thinking?: Car-tastrophic

There are some ideas in comics that are offensively bad. Storylines that make you say “why did they think that was ever a good idea” out of disgust and anger. But there are also other times where you say “why?” just out of pure confusion, because an idea that got to publication seems so pointless and so redundant that it should never have been given the go ahead in the first place. And it is the later we are dealing with one this weeks edition of What Were They Thinking? (the place where we look at the stupidest, most ill-advised things in all of comics history) as we are taking a look at The Spider-Mobile.

Caption Contest #93

Ok guys, time for another caption contest, where you have to come with the funniest replacement dialogue for a random comic panel of my choosing. This week you have to replace the caption for this panel:

Everyone can have a maximum of 3 entries, entries must be in by next Wednesday (April 10th) and All Entries Must Be PG-13.

Character Design Challenge #320 – Art Deco.

Your challenge this week is to use HeroMachine to create an Art Deco style poster that focuses on one of the following topics: travel, music, fashion, architecture or film.

Rules for posts, contests, and challenges: Original characters only, no copyrighted characters, no characters based on copyrighted characters, no characters based on RPG’s or other games. The characters must be your own design and not based on any character that might be copyrighted in any way. I have the right to delete any post that I believe crosses this line without warning. Only post characters that have been created solely using Hero Machine, and that you know for certain have never been entered in a contest before. If you aren’t certain, don’t enter it, because I’m not going to go back through all of the contests and check.

All entries must be in JPG or PNG form (BMPs are too big), posted to a publicly accessible website (like the HeroMachine :,ImageShackPhotoBucket, or whatever);

  • Entries must be made as a comment or comments to this post, containing a link directly to the image and the character name;
  • Please name your filesas [your name]-[character name].[file extension] before you upload it. So DiCicatriz, for instance, would save his “Bayou Belle” character image as DiCicatriz-BayouBelle.png.

Please make the link go directly to the image (like this) and not to a hosting jump page (like this).

This contest will close on Sunday, May 7th at 9:00am Eastern.
