Caption Contest 58

To up the challenge this week, I have a panel with a blank caption that is NOT, in fact, completely blank. How crazy is that?!

What is the mysterious cloud of green funk? What is the identity of the portly fellow, and what is he doing? That’s up to you to decide, but somehow whatever you write to fill in that missing dialog balloon has to make sense with the white-clad fellow’s “Blundering Fool!” rejoinder.

Yeah, good luck with that! The rules as usual are:

  • All entries must be made as comments to this post;
  • No more than three (3) entries per person;
  • Keep it clean, appropriate for a PG-13 type of audience.

That’s it! I’ll choose a winner next Tuesday, to be selected by whichever one makes me laugh the most. So get ready to bring the funny! The winner will get to choose to have either a caricature of their face, or any one item of their choice, included with the HeroMachine 3 final version.

Good luck everyone!

Character Contest 13 Winner

Thanks to everyone who entered Character Contest 13, and congratulations to the finalists below for their outstanding work. Before getting into the meat of the submissions, though, I wanted to kick things off with Ian Healy’s inspired cover, which would never get the Comics Code Authority seal but nonetheless is a hoot:

And now, the finalists!

Poll Position: Cinematic Slugfests

Our poll position question for this week dumps all that touchy-feely chick-flick nonsense and gets down to discussing what really matters to guys in super-hero movies — fisticuffs!

Discussion after the jump. And many thanks to good buddy John for coming up with the question when I was out of ideas. You rule!

HM3: The sky is the limit

I’ve just released the “BackgroundSky” set for use with the HeroMachine 3 Alpha. Here’s a taste of the first page of items in the new set:

background-sky

While most of these can be used singly, you can get some really nice settings by toggling “multiples” on, and combining some of the Sky items with Floors. For instance, the tree with lawn from Floor layered over the rickety rope bridge also found in Floor, with the waterfall and rock item from Sky, makes for a cool jungle-explorer setting.

Drawing these environments takes a really long time, as you can hopefully see from the level of detail in them. So I understand there are a lot more Sky and Floor and other environmental goodies that could be done, but I frankly am kind of sick of them at this point. We’ll circle back and fill in the (sizable) gaps before launch — for instance, there are lots of “wizard’s lab” types of items that would work great.

Also, I realize that “Sky” is probably a bad name for these, since after the first four or five items I kind of ran out of actual “sky” stuff to do, and instead is more like a “middle ground” sort of set. But I didn’t think anyone would know what “middle ground” meant. The sets in this slot are all sort of a jumble, but if it’s too odd I can always go back and reorganize, just let me know.

Finally, I’ll be moving on to Kneepad items next. Would they go better in the FootRight and FootLeft slots, or should I put them in Legwear? And let me know any specific knee-pad types of items you would want specifically to see.

Friday Distracticon: Serial trouble and I don’t mean Captain Crunch

So by Friday, I’m usually pretty brain-fried and in need of distraction, a state which I am sure is shared by most of the world plus the people who read this blog. So during my jog this morning I thought of a new sort of Transformer called “Distracticons”, whose only real power is to make their opponents stop paying attention for long enough to escape:

This week, I’ve been a bit distracted by the “Wednesday Comics” experiment by DC. If you haven’t heard, each week DC is publishing a set of one-page comics stories on old-fashioned tabloid-sized newsprint, in an effort to revive the serial sensation of comics in their heyday:
