CDC 384 – Sirens

In Greek mythology, the Sirens  were dangerous creatures, who lured nearby sailors with their enchanting music and singing voices to shipwreck on the rocky coast of their island.

Your CDC challenge this week is to design one of these alluring creatures using HM3.

The winner this week will receive a HeroMachine rendering of my take on their design.

Please follow the instructions below regarding the naming of entries.

You may enter up to three times.

Rules for posts, contests, and challenges: Original characters only, no copyrighted characters, no characters based on copyrighted characters, no characters based on RPG’s or other games. The characters must be your own design and not based on any character that might be copyrighted in any way. Please keep all submissions PG13: full or partial nudity is prohibited. I have the right to delete any post that I believe crosses this line without warning. Only post characters that have been created solely using Hero Machine, and that you know for certain have never been entered in a contest before. If you aren’t certain, don’t enter it, because I’m not going to go back through all of the contests and check.

All entries must be in JPG or PNG form (BMPs are too big), posted to a publicly accessible website (like the HeroMachine :,ImageShack, Deviant Art or whatever);Do not use Photobucket.

  • Entries must be made as a comment or comments to this post, containing a link directly to the image and the character name;
  • No copyrighted characters please – they will be deleted.
  • Please name your filesas [your name]-[character name].[file extension] before you upload it. So DiCicatriz, for instance, would save his “Bayou Belle” character image as DiCicatriz-BayouBelle.png.

Please make the link go directly to the image (like this) and not to a hosting jump page (like this).

This contest will close at 9:00 am Eastern on Sunday, October 14th.

I don’t really DO backgrounds, so I figured I’d give one a shot this time

1st Siren is taken from the mythos that has it have more of a human/bird hybrid shape, akin to that of a harpy. Here the Siren have called the sailors into the rocks and are picking them off one at a time.

2nd Siren is taken from the more mermaid type appearances, here I showed 2 sirens one in true form and one transformed to a body to entice the sailors over. Below you see the remains of their past victims.

3rd Siren I decided to combine the 2 and make a straight forth monster from the myths with both bird and fish like attributes.

My entry this week is the Deep Siren.

The Deep Siren lives in the dark depths of the ocean, feeding mostly on the fish that live there. To her, humans, so rarely found in the abyssal layer, are an exotic and sophisticate meal that she just can’t resist. Her glowing organ atop of her head has the ability to hypnotise males in a similar way to how other kinds of mermaids use their songs, which she uses to lure her prey, including unsuspecting divers and submarines.

I call this one the Scavenger, because she takes at least one “souvenir” from each of her victims, hence the crown and the draperies. I imagine she once lost her hand while trying to subdue a Turkish soldier who fought back, and she replaced her hand…with his scimitar.

Bit hard to be indecent in Heromachine, but to be sure . . . where are the togas?

  6. GuesssWho says:

I couldn’t do the legs right on account of the site missing a few features, and I had to do the closeup separately because the idiotic thing wouldn’t let me export a large widescreen version, but after a few hours when I should have been sleeping I came up with this/these: and
The proper, classical seabird version, complete with toga and talons 😀

ETA: My vote is for rossoftheyear, assuming you can’t vote for yourself. Or it would be, if we could vote.
