Make It Sew – The Costume Blog

Due to a very busy week, there will no costume blog this week. I will try to get my "Schmidt" together and post as usual next Friday.

Friday Night, Just Got Laid … Off

I just wanted to give y'all a heads-up that I got laid off from my regular job today. On the one hand, obviously that sucks. But on the other hand, I am leaning pretty seriously towards making HeroMachine my full-time obsession once again. Ad revenue has gone way up over the last few months, to the point that it's a viable option.

I haven't decided for sure yet. But if that's the way I go, that means hopefully more app improvements like finally finishing out all the left-right item sets and such.

Thanks again to all of you for your long-time and continued support of me and the site. I'll keep you posted about how things go, any decisions made, etc.

Turn Your Dog Into a Super-Hero!

In conjunction with Dogster.com, I'm happy to announce a new off-site contest! Head on over to the article for the details, but basically one lucky entrant will get to have their pet drawn as a super-hero by yours truly.

Here are a few samples of what we're talking about:

Big Question ♯22

As I said last week, for this week's big question I want to talk about bad or even useless superpowers. Now with all of the super-powered individuals running around in comics land, it's inevitable that a few are going to have powers that are, at best, not very helpful for superheroics. So, what I want to know is, who do you think has the worst power set of any comics character (and I'm not counting non-powered characters here)?

Power User Profiles: Cantdraw

This weeks Power User has got one of the best shading styles I've seen. Some of his costume designs have been a bit, ummm, risky, but I can't think of anything he's done that I haven't thought, that's a pretty damn good design. He might not be able to draw, but he sure can heromachine. Give it up for Cantdraw.

Poll Position: Friday Night Fights!

fridayfightnight Logo

There seems to be enough interest for me to run another Friday Night Fights  therefore this weeks poll position will be dedicated to possible Themes for FNF.

Monsters: Five different monster types such as Vampires, Demons, Golems, Bestial monsters etc.

Super Team: A five member team of supers with 5 different Hero/villain types such as Brick, Blaster, Gadgeteer,  Martial Arts, etc

Mix Genre: Five characters from a mix of genre such as Fantasy, Super, Horror, Sci-Fi, etc.

Historical Figures as Supers: Five characters from five different historical periods of time such as ancient Rome, Ancient Eygpt, Early America, French Revolution ect. The catch of this would be that you need to re-image a true historical figure from the given time period as if he or she had been SuperHero of Supervillain back in his or her day.

Public Domain Remakes: I select five public domain characters you will need to re-design.

Other: Some other theme you'd like to see.

********************

Last week I asked which party role you prefer when gaming, Tank, DPS, Healer, or Crowd Control. The Result of the poll based on your votes is .... Tank ... winning by just one vote, with DPS coming in second.

Character Design Contest ♯45- Naturalism

No, not that; that's naturism. This week I want you to create a character who can control some aspect of nature, so things like plants, animals, earth that sort of thing. I'm not looking for elementals, so no fire controllers or geo-mancers, but you can have water as long as the character has some connection to a natural environment (think Aquaman style powers). Also weather controllers will count.

As per usual, there are no entry limits, the contest will close at 12am Sunday (blog time). Please read the rules before entering, have fun and good luck.

Rules for posts, contests, and challenges that I am hosting: Original characters only, no copyrighted characters, no characters based on copyrighted characters, no characters based on RPG’s or other games. The characters must be your own design and not based on any character that might be copyrighted in any way. I have the right to delete any post that I believe crosses this line without warnings. Only post characters that you have either created for this contest specifically or you know for certain have never been entered to a contest before. If you aren’t certain, don’t enter it, because I’m not going to go back through all of the contests and check.

Screen Spotlight: Big Bang Theory

So, as promised this week we will talk about the Big Bang Theory. Now, the reason I want to cover this show is not because of the number of references to 'geek culture' (e.g. the Green Lantern t-shirt dead centre in the pic above). No, the reason I want to talk about it is I can't work out what to make of it. Now I know a lot of people on here love the show, hell, the rest of my family seem to be addicted to it, but I can never work out if they are just taking the piss half of the time. Obviously I can only comment on what I've seen of it, but it seems to rely almost exclusively on the very old and tired stereotype of geeks being  socially inept, sci-fi obsessed losers (see the first Sci-fi corner, when we covered Star Trek, for further details). I will concede that this doesn't happen all of the time and sometimes it its done in very clever and amusing ways, but for gods sake, I grew out of stereotypes when I was 15. People say that TV, and comedy in particular, is based on stereotyping, but that isn't true (something we will cover on the next Screen Spotlight when we cover one of my two favourite shows of all time: Red Dwarf). Considering the success of things like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, New Doctor Who and the Star Trek reboot movies (in purely financial terms with the last one), stuff generally considered as "Geek Only" are becoming increasingly "For Everyone", so why keep bring up the geek stereotypes. No-one finds sports fans who collect their various memorabilia (signed baseballs, hats, football kits, old baseball/ football cards, posters etc. etc. I mean there's so much of this **** I could go on for ages) weird or funny, so why is collecting figurines of Star Trek or comics characters? And my main gripe, and this is purely personal, but because I love all of the comics, sci-fi, fantasy stuff they routinely use, it sometimes feels like my family are only laughing at stuff on the show because they recognise some of it from what I do (although I probably don't help myself in that respect).

But anyway, that's enough from me. As I said at the start, I know there's a lot of you who love BBT so it's over to you to convince me that I'm wrong about the show. Sorry for the rant, I've been ill all weekend and that's not conducive to being cheerful.

Next week we'll be going back to What Were They Thinking and looking at Marvel in the '90's.
