Character Design Contest 79: 'Tis the Season

Your design challenge for this week is to create a character or characters based on something related to the current holiday season. You could go with something Christmas related (Santa, the elves, flying reindeer, turbo sled, Wise Men, a hero named "The Shepherd", a villain named "The Swaddler", etc.), Chanukah (Maccabeus, eight members of the "Menorah" team, someone named Shamash, etc.), or you could go with something winter related (Solstice, blizzards, etc.). Your choice!

The rules are the same as usual:

  • All entries must be in JPG or PNG form (BMPs are too big), posted to a publicly accessible website (like ImageShack, PhotoBucket, the UGO Forums, whatever);
  • Entries must be made as a comment or comments to this post, containing a link directly to the image and the character name;
  • The image cannot have been used in any previous HeroMachine character design contest;
  • Please name your files as [your name]-[character name].[file extension]. So DiCicatriz, for instance, would save his "Bayou Belle" character image as DiCicatriz-BayouBelle.png.
  • Please make the link go directly to the image (like this) and not to a hosting jump page (like this). If you see "preview" or "rotate" somewhere in the link you're probably doing it wrong.
  • All entries must be in by next Monday, when I'll choose a winner.

The person with the winning entry as selected by our expert panel (i.e. me) will win their choice of a) a portrait to go in HeroMachine 3, b) an item to go in HeroMachine 3, or c) a custom black and white "Sketch of the Day" style drawing (also by me).

Good luck, everyone!

This one sounds interesting, I’ve been thinking about doing something like this for a few days now, I guess this will give me the nudge to make it a reality.

  7. Dionne Jinn says:

This is my idea of old fashioned Finnish Joulupukki (literally “Christmas goat”) as he might have appeared before the “Coca-Cola Red Santa Claus” came to Finland. He was more likely to bring sticks to the naughty children than presents to anyone.

  8. FRM says:

is a santa hat an option in hm?

  9. Jeff Hebert says:

No limit, it’s the giving season 🙂

  10. Kaylin88100 says:

    @FRM (9): I don’t think so, but I know how to make one 😉

  11. Jeff Hebert says:

    I don’t think there’s a Santa hat, no.

  12. BenK22 says:

Can I just say that that is one BA Santa. I’m certain he makes most Martians run in terror. He is one roundhouse kick away from being Santa combined with Chuck Norris.

  13. Moomonster says:

By the way, it’s called The Ghost of Christmas Present….. just in case no one got that.

  14. McKnight57 says:

The HyperElf is Santa’s cybernetic helper. A sonic lock-pick on his left arm allows access into the homes of good boys and girls. He carries the list in a magic scroll and hits the homes that santa can’t always get to. That mostly means the ones without a chimney and fireplace.

    Solstice doesn’t play nice.

  16. alphaalpharomeo says:

Tis the season to remember him and what he sacrafised for all of us. Whether you believe or not, he is the reason we have this holiday.

  18. Johnny Gear says:

There is a story about Saint Nicholas that while at the Council of Nicaea he got angry at Ariaus and pinched him out. I imagine him looking something like this. Of course I added the red and black to make him more Santa-e.
    http://i1121.photobucket.com/albums/l512/JohnnyGear/JohnnyGear-SaintNick.png

  19. Vampyrist says:

@Alphaalpharomero, actually you can thank the Romans for that. Merry Natalis Invicti everyone.

  20. TJ says:

Sorry about the double post! Was having computer issues!

  21. Nick Hentschel says:

Johnny Gear (28): Thank you (as a Nicholas) for remembering that old story. I had a bizarre image of Santa suiting up for a boxing match, reading that tale as a kid…..

  22. Syntax says:

Uhh, Jeff, for some reason the Heromachine main page isn’t showing up on my computer. It keeps saying that the site is down, which I now know it isn’t. Any way that can be fixed?

  23. victor hugo contreras says:

santa claus from the Mortal Kombat universe, not all the time santa claus have to be good or had to use that traditional outfit all the time, he can be badass and show some martial arts instead of going down the chimneys

I don’t really think I can do much with this one. Here’s my first (and possibly only) entry, Disapointment:

And since I am now convinced that I do not have the skill to pull something like that off, somebody make a picture of Santa giving a little Jesus a birthday present.

    Happy Holidays!!

  32. Syntax says:

Blue Blazer, I gotta give you props since that is quite possibly one of the coolest Santa related things I have ever seen in my life, but it looks like the Elf girl’s arm is broken.

Volt, that is an awesome robot. Does he transform into a totally pimped out sleigh?

Off topic, not that I’m a holy roller or anything, but how come we only have one Jesus and absolutely no Jewish stuff, Kwanza stuff, or any other religious holiday stuff? Santa is cool, but it wasn’t originally his holiday.

  33. Whit says:

@Syntax (50): I’m planning to do a Kwanzaa piece, just hadn’t got to it yet.

  34. TJ says:

@ Tom(43) feel free to use the name TJ! I’ve been considering goin with another user name!

  35. Zarae says:

thought i’d try one, tho not good quality at all.
had to press print screen and past in paint b/c it didnt cooperate.

  36. Volt says:

    Im agree with Syntax,
..”Santa is cool, but it wasn’t originally his holiday”..
    Christmas, really is about Jesus

    (sorry.. my english is low)

  37. dblade says:

In these modern days, Christmas has become more about the spirit of giving and Santa represents this in a distinctly iconic fashion. Even an agnostic like myself partakes in the holiday and I don’t give a second thought to its origins.

  38. celticdragon79(TJ) says:

changed the user name to celticdragon79(formerly TJ)to avoid confusion.

There’s a reason that nobody bothers Santa while he’s making toys…the Frost Giant Jack!

  45. headlessgeneral says:

    Cold-powered hero, Jack Frost.

  46. Syntax says:

Ya’know, evidence is showing that Jesus was actually born in the summertime. We get it in wintertime because the Romans occupied the holy lands at the time, and the Birth of Christ began to merge with the Roman Saturnalia to help smooth the conversion process. We get alot of modern Christian stuff from the Romans, including the word Christ itself.

  47. vodnik says:

Rudolf II, Holy Roman Emperor, King of Hungary and Croatia, King of Bohemia, and Archduke of Austria

    http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2011/355/a/6/rudolf_ii_by_vadnik-d4jrldg.png

Hundreds of years of inbreeding in Europe’s Hobsberg family has led to Rudolf’s unusual, and strikingly holiday themed, appearance.

    http://i1111.photobucket.com/albums/h476/surs1/hm3-beta-1.png

  49. Phatchick says:

Behind every great man is a woman; and that is never more true than at the North Pole. Santa may make the yearly gift run but it’s Mrs Claus who triple checks the naughty list, make sure the paint on the toys is non-toxic and keeps St. Nick on a steady diet and exercise routine (how else do you think he can eat all those cookies on Xmas eve?). Mrs. C, as she’s fondly known, is the force that keeps the North Pole running smoothly year after year. The Big Guy couldn’t do it without her.
    https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-MajpmZzyvR0/TvIpJiIrJUI/AAAAAAAAAR0/qamccdjNSE8/s512/Phatchick-MrsC.png

  50. skybandit says:

@ Phatchick: Mrs. Claus is Hillary Clinton? That explains why Santa’s calling for Hoes all the time. And there’s their Chinese financier!
Seriously, a nice concept well executed.

  51. FRM says:

    how many entries are allowed?

  52. Syntax says:

Jeff said there was no limit this time.

  53. Nick Hentschel says:

NOTICE – Having one 2 caption contests, I now declare that I am in these contests solely for fun.

Anyway, here’s what I was thinking: a long time ago, there was this silly cable movie that featured Kathy Ireland as Santa’s daughter. Wondering about where she got her genes from, this got me thinking about her mom. For what law is there, that says Mrs. Claus HAS to be a fat old grandma in Victorian clothes?
Santa lives with ELVES, for pete’s sake, and is even described as one himself, Elves don’t necessarily show how old they are, and even at that, Santa’s probably in a position to choose anyone he wants. And most of all, the Queen of Christmas surely deserves better.
So, I offer you this new view of the sight that may have greeted the Santa, when he came to the Norht Pole, the one that keeps him coming home every year. (Wouldn’t you?)

    http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/s320x320/407673_2948853768452_1474586528_33319525_693829324_n.jpg

This got me thinking about goofy story ideas again, of course, stuff like, “Santa – A Love Story.” After all, with a face like this to come home to, you have to wonder: is he in it for the kids… or for her? 😉

  54. FRM says:

here’s one making fun of Keebler, and the “baking-cookies-in-trees” idea

haha! fleas navidad! good one, Phatchick!

  58. Nick Hentschel says:

FRM (80/83): Good jokes, both. Thanks for keeping politics out of #80; there’s too much of that going around.

  64. Worf says:

    @Zokontech(86): Two problems:

    – Second is when I log in to see your picture it says the picture cannot be displayed as it contains errors.

  70. Lime says:

Long ago, the great god Ra lived among humankind as their king. As he aged, there came whispers of a conspiracy against the elderly ruler. Ra heard of this, and called forth his daughter Hathor. This was a goddess most associated with music and laughter. But when she heard of the threat against her beloved father, she became enraged. Transforming into the fearsome Sekhmet, in the form of a lioness she sought out and slaughtered the conspirators. Yet her rage was not calmed.

Fearing Hathor would destroy all of humankind, the other gods devised a plan to stop her. Having mixed red ochre with beer, they poured this concoction over a field, so that it appeared flooded with blood. When Hathor approached, she was fooled by the sight, and being quite literally bloodthirsty, she lapped up the beer. She became drunk and sleepy, and when she woke, her rage had passed.

But now she was distressed by the realization of what she had done, and she fled Egypt, taking away the light she bore, and wandered in the desert. At last she was found by wise Thoth, who convinced her to return to her home. With every step homeward, her light grew, and the days no longer shrank but began to grow longer again.

  71. Worf says:

@alvacascus(99): WOW. I am amazed! Awesome use of the highlights to bring form to a totally black figure. Also, best children I’ve ever seen done with HM.

  72. Myro says:

I may try my hand at something else, but for the time being, I give you the Hero of Hanukkah, The Dreidel. Make sure not to get hit by his pieces of gelt. At those speeds, they will put you down.

  76. Phatchick says:

alvacascus & gendonesia, IMHO, your’s are the best this time around. Beautiful use of perspective and color.

  77. Lime says:

Niphredil was beginning to suspect she was adopted. Her mother, Holly, kept telling her now was not the time to raise the subject. It was Christmas, after all! Of course, it was always Christmas in Christmastown …

(“Niphredil” is the Sindarin name for a type of flower called a snowdrop, in case anyone was wondering.)

Dblade, yea, as you kick my butt yet again!!!! Thanks though!!

  79. Nick Hentschel says:

Lime (110): Cute, subtly naughty contrast between Elves and Eldar. But don’t worry about us understanding; the name is pretty obviously Tolkienish.

Wouldn’t it be a neat idea if the North Pole was where the Elves went after leaving Middle-Earth? It would allow us to blend two myths together easily….

  80. Trekkie says:

    Entry #1

Pantomime- a Christmas play with very over-the-top acting (mostly from the villain), cross-dressing, happy endings and fourth wall breaking: http://forums.ugo.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=81391&d=1324575459

  81. Lime says:

    Last one from me …

Imagine you lived long ago. Long before electricity, before glass windows and grocery stores and snow plows. You are keenly aware of the growing cold and the shrinking daylight. There is nothing to do but bundle up inside your little home, be it made of sod, logs, or mud bricks, and hope your stock of firewood is enough, for it is dangerous to trek out into the snowstorm to seek more. Even more desperately, you pray your food stores will be enough, for there is absolutely nothing you can do if they run out.

The nights are long. You are cramped, cold, hungry, restless and frightened. You badly need something to break the tension. So you count the days until the receding sun begins to turn its course back toward you again. You hold a ritual to encourage the sun to remember you. And when at last the battle between day and night begins to favor light again, you cannot help but engage in euphoric celebration.

The world over, cultures celebrate winter solstice. We may argue about the origins and who stole what from whom and whose religion is better, but all mark the promise of life renewed.

Skybandit(98): YES! This is awesome! I actually find it even more funny when you know enough of Stooge-Lore to know that they were all Jewish. Also, Monty Python FTW!

Alvacascus(99): Dude. It took me a while to realize that was done in Heromachine. I thought that you drew that and were posting it for giggles. Well done.

Myro(103): I love the yarmulke that Dreidel has on. More superheroes should wear them in my opinion.

Gendonesia(108): I love the perspective on that. It kinda looks liek the girl’s head isn’t on right, but that may be me.

Lime(110): If she was adopted then she’s kinda like a living present. 🙂

  85. Syntax says:

Papakrok(111): Thank you for clearing that up since I had no idea what was going on. I blame poneis and Windigos.

Trekkie(113): I love to sense of ham that I get from the villain, and the cloud-bushes. And a crossdressing guy is always funny.

Lime(114): Beautiful. I am not worthy to gaze upon it.

Headlessgeneral(115): Man that’s cool! Although he kinda looks like he’s doing squat-thrusts. Menacing Squat-thrusts.

FRM(118): Now I’m depressed. At least the guy is apparently weighty enough to keep his oversized-looking pants on.

Man, I’ve gotta be pretty funny if I want to be a finalist since there is now way I’m getting there by design quality.

    My first entry.

    Anti Christmas

First of all personally i hate christmas. I have a good and personnal reason. Two of my relative died near christmas in a same year. So i really really hate this season of the year

A little note about the picture. The skeleton santa doesn’t need any explanation. In Hungary, Santa assistants we call Krampusz aka Little Devil. One of the little devils gives a gift, which makes no sense, and the other is to punish if someone was bad.

This image is a social critique on my part. Christmas has lost what it’s mean. Only one thing important how to give each other stupid gifts. For me Christmas is all about love and peace with each other and the world.

(Sorry i don’t want to disturb anyone but this is my personnal opinion)

Final entry, had this stuff on my mind for a while. In certain tribes up north, there are tales of a monstrous creature that lives in the snow. A creature that was once man, but man no longer, now only a mindless killer. A creature they call the Wendigo.
    http://i.imgur.com/VZije.jpg

  98. Syntax says:

Tarkabarka, I love the bone tree. It’s very macabre, yet very festive as well. As for the Krampusz(s), at first I thought their horns were bows. Whether that was your intention or not, I like the fact that they look like one thing, but may very well be another. That kind of ambiguity makes them a little unsettling.

I just realized that Steve’s hand was on backwards. Whoopsie! http://i.imgur.com/YX2Lt.jpg

Santa’s new hiring scheme seems to have backfired… or did it?

  101. Syntax says:

Almost forgot, Steve is wearing polar bear skin boots and wrappings. Polar bear fur is kinda yellow-y white, but the skin is black. Just throwing that out there.

  102. Tarkabarka says:

Long time ago when i make 2 picture in a day, but i have this idea.

The picture name is One cold Winter Night.
A lonely girl in a cold night in the cemetery, what she want to find it. Who knows it. (I know it but i give everyone a chance to find the good answer.)

    Tis The Season Entry #1
I made this one for a White Elephant Gift Exchange:

    http://s795.photobucket.com/albums/yy240/Cliff_HM3/Cliff_WhiteElephantSanta.jpg

    Entry #2
I wrote this haiku for a GIFt contest (won’t find out if I won till January), and made a haiga out of it (illustrated haiku) then I printed some out and used it for my Christmas card to my poet & haiku friends. The red square in the corner is my Chop, my Japanese signature (took about 20 Insignia squares and triangles to make), my haigo (haiku penname) is Kawazu, which is the old literary term for Frog honoring Master Basho’s “old pond …/ frog leaps in/ water’s sound

    http://s795.photobucket.com/albums/yy240/Cliff_HM3/Cliff_ChristmasEve_haiga.jpg

    Entry #3
Here is a redo of Prixy on the Ornament
It’s not just taking the suggestions made on him, but I changed the lighting as well, making it more obvious about the yellow tree light to his right.
While I got rid of the stripes on the red ornament, I decided I liked it better solid color.
I also made the ornament top larger to look more realistic and to cover his publics a little better (yeah Prixy has no Privates) 😀
I also added the horseshoe Insignia as a hanger,
Altered the color on the diamond ornament a little.
So hopefully this is new enough for the contest.
I was really happy with the outcome.

    Entry #4
You know my love for Satyrs, well here he is, Satyr Claus wishing everyone a Fantastic Faunalia, a Cool Yule, a Wonderful Winter Solstice, a Happy Hannakha, a Very Merry Christmas, A Bountiful Boxing Day and a Krazy Kwanza!

    http://s795.photobucket.com/albums/yy240/Cliff_HM3/Cliff_SantaSatyr001.jpg

    Entry #5
    Something Super Hero:
Sleet is a cool kid who found a crystal on a snowy winter’s day which turned out to be an alien crystal fallen from a passing meteroite during the snowstorm and gave him the powers of snow and ice. He feels no cold effects, and generates cold from his body, or produces snow and ice, he can ice up creating body armour or ice weapons and can even produce ice under his feet for skating on surfaces.

I hope you enjoy and hoping you all had a great holidy this year.

  116. Cliff says:

    Tarkabarka
I am so sorry for your loss. Not only the relatives but the Holidays as well.
My mother died Dec 19 1999, since 1996 we had 12 deaths of friends and family, one was my wife’s mother Ruby who died the day that our friend Jerry who had AIDS came home from the hospital to spend his reamaining days with us. Our friend Steve was murdered by a drug dealer, then Jerry died of AIDS at our house where he wanted to be.
My parents always gave me great holiday memories and I couldn’t let her memory down, even though our garage collapsed and destroyed our decorations that same year, I still didn’t let it ruin Christmas for me, we went out and bought new ornaments and had a good Christmas with the remaining family and friends, remembering how Mom would have loved it.
This year had it not been for a $10 Gift Card from my Dialysis doctor I couldn’t have even had a present for Bre to open this year, and thanks to a free turkey coupon from our electricity company last month and food stamps we are going to feast today on stuffing, gravy, cranberry sauce, pea salad, satyr eggs (we don’t like to call them deviled anymore) and mashed potatoes, and for desert we have home made cookies and butterscotch fudge our equally financially challanged roommate made us, which is so much better than any gift she could have bought us.
As you said, it’s not about all the gifts, the Holidays, which ever WInter celebration you celebrate, should be all about the love of friends and family and I am just thankful for the ones I still have and the memories and love of those now gone.

At my family’s house, it’s the fallout after opening presents that’s the best. This is basically what the living room looks like right now… it’s the one day of the year that my mom tolerates such a massive mess. 🙂

(Hoping to convince her to leave all the paper till tomorrow, but that’s probably a long shot.)

    Merry Christmas, HM!

    A very Doctor Christmas:
