Original Justice League vs. Original Avengers

Our weekly Versus smackdown this time out comes courtesy of Sutter Kaine, and I think it's a peach:

{democracy:205}

The concept here was to take the teams as they were originally founded, with that era's characters and powers. With two very major exceptions -- I've removed Superman and Batman from the JLA roster. My rationale is that DC deliberately kept them out of most issues of the JLA comics as they had enough exposure elsewhere in the company's titles. My real reason is that, come on, that would be totally unfair and uninteresting.

Having said that, let's take a closer look, shall we?

Character Contest 74 75: Random-palooza

We haven't done a "random name" character contest in almost a year, so I think it's about time we revisited this always-fun concept.

It's pretty straightforward and a great way to stretch your creative muscles.

Whoever comes up with the best character based on a random name generated by Seventh Sanctum Superhero/Villain Name Generator will win a) his or her choice of either any item they like to be included in the final HeroMachine 3 version; b) a portrait to be included in the final HeroMachine 3 version, or c) a "sketch of the day" style custom drawing. The rules are fairly simple:

The person with the winning entry as selected by our expert panel (i.e. me) will win their choice of a) a portrait to go in HeroMachine 3, b) an item to go in HeroMachine 3, or c) a custom black and white "Sketch of the Day" style drawing (also by me). The rules otherwise are the same as always:

  • Go to the Seventh Sanctum Superhero/Villain Name Generator and choose "10" from the number of names to generate. Leave the other selection boxes at their default and hit "Generate". Your character(s) must be based on one of these generated names. Try your best to limit yourself to one spin of the wheel instead of generating names over and over till you get one you like!
  • All entries must be in JPG or PNG form (BMPs are too big), posted to a publicly accessible website (like ImageShack, PhotoBucket, the UGO Forums, whatever);
  • Entries must be made as a comment or comments to this post, containing a link directly to the image and the character name;
  • The image cannot have been used in any previous HeroMachine character design contest;
  • Please name your files as [your name]-[character name].[file extension]. So DiCicatriz, for instance, would save his "Bayou Belle" character image as DiCicatriz-BayouBelle.png.
  • Please make the link go directly to the image (like this) and not to a hosting jump page (like this). If you see "preview" or "rotate" somewhere in the link you're probably doing it wrong.
  • All entries must be in by next Monday, when I'll choose a winner.

No limit on entries this week, so knock yourselves out. Just make them good!

Caption Contest 110 Winner!

Thanks to everyone who submitted entries for the Creepy Bear Caption Contest! I picked out a few that I thought were particularly funny:

  • MLS: Fuzzy Wuzzy wants you bare.
  • Jake: Where’s Archie? Well, lets just say this bed sheet used to be white.
  • Patrick: This bed is juuussst riiigghhht!
  • Mr.MikeK: I’m the Don’t Care Bear.
  • McKnight57: I’M the reason Goldilocks’ bed was just right.
  • Gene:
    1. Once you go bear, you learn to like hair.
    2. Hey, you ladies know you have the right….to Bear arms.
    3. Have you ladies seen my … honey?
  • Joel: “So, which one of you lovely ladies wants to make me a REAL boy?”

I liked all of those, but since there can be only one winner, I am going with ... Gene!

Congratulations to Gene, and thanks again to everyone who entered.

META: No PUP today

I dropped the ball on the Power User Profiles and thought I had one ready, when in fact I don't. My apologies, but we'll have no PUP today.

So if you all want to treat this as an open thread, go for it! Discuss anything you like within the bounds of appropriateness. If you have another community member you'd like to see profiled, definitely let me know. Or you could discuss the weather, the "DC52" relaunch, what upcoming super-hero movies you are excited about, college football, or whatever you like.
