Your Character Design Challenge this week is to create the most awesome illustration possible featuring the idea of a Big Bad type of villain using HeroMachine 3.
We're talking city-threatening, nation-engaging, Justice League-level sorts of things here, stuff that will strike terror into the hearts of supermen and superwomen (and even superdogs!) everywhere. Sure, Paste Pot Pete and The Joker are great one-on-one threats, but I'm going for something bigger and badder here, something that would require a whole team to take down. Or just, you know, Superman. Same diff.
I'll pick my personal favorites when the week is over, with the one I like best being featured in the right column for the week. The rules otherwise are the same as always:
- All entries must be in JPG or PNG form (BMPs are too big), posted to a publicly accessible website (like the HeroMachine forums, ImageShack, PhotoBucket, or whatever);
- Entries must be made as a comment or comments to this post, containing a link directly to the image and the character name;
- The image cannot have been used in any previous HeroMachine challenge;
- Please name your files as [your name]-[character name].[file extension] before you upload it. So DiCicatriz, for instance, would save his "Bayou Belle" character image as DiCicatriz-BayouBelle.png.
- Please make the link go directly to the image (like this) and not to a hosting jump page (like this). See this post on how to get the direct link for most sites.
- All entries must be in by next Monday, when I'll choose my personal favorites.

Also, the file name is incorrect, it needs to be “vesker787-murks.png” whereas now it’s just “murks.png”. It’s a nice drawing, I’d have to have it not count.
Okay so were still having to go through stuff about properly naming files? When you get done while still in the creation window of HM just save the name of the character with “your name – the characters name” example, TOOL – Jefferenski. If you try and rename a link while posting it just breaks the link because it wont go to that page. How many times must we beat this dead horse. Is that easy enough, I know Jeff and others have gone over this at least once right guys, or was it a hundred times, I can’t remember. If your new than steer clear of that shot gun blast just try and read all the rules and regs before entering a contest so you don’t get your butt in a sling with Jeff too. Back to you Jeff…

I’m trying not to be a jerk about it, but I honestly don’t count the ones that aren’t right and that’s a shame, to go through all the effort and not have your work considered.

I understand on that one, I have seen some contest where I was like oh yeah I already got something for this one and had to go back and rename and move over to different file then post so all the naming was correct.

My first entry,
This is Akan which comes from the bible and means “one who troubles”
Akan is obsessed with poison and is an evil alchemist in his own mind. He uses these skills to create horrific batches of poison and spreads them through out cities at a time. His goal is to wipe out major cities leaving them in crumbled states of panic.
He is a psychopath, he does this only for the sole reason to watch the cities fall apart.
He uses the gauntlet on his arm to spray the poison up close and personal to anyone who gets in his way.

For future reference for everyone that doesn’t know how to post properly.
Step 1: export image from hero machine onto your computer naming it for example, CKnap – big bad.
Step 2: go into photobucket or whatever image hosting site you use and upload your picture naming it for example, CKnap – big bad. Then hit upload and save.
Step 3: grab the link and post the link here.
Rhys how I do it with photobucket and it works perfectly everytime. Note that when you save the name it has to be exactly in that order, your name then your pictures name. Hopefully this will help everyone and stop Jeff from having to remind someone every second and third post.

I decided not to go for a literally big guy, but definitely powerful. Originally he was Kamamaru Odeki, a strong and ambitious Japanese politician. His ambition however lead him to make a deal with Susano-o, the god of the underworld. Susano-o gave Kamamaru Odeki a unique power. now, whenever Kamamaru kills another person he absorbs their life force and vitality. Not only does this increase his life span keeping him forever young, but he also gains the slain persons physical, and mental attributes in addition to his own. He started out small, but with each kill grew his ambitions further. Now he rules over Japan with an iron fist. By this point he has killed enough people to give himself strength, speed, and durability on par with, if not surpassing, that of superman, and the intellect of a supercomputer. Now he goes by the supervillain alias Shogun and seeks to control the whole world.

First entry: Melinoe – She is an Interdimensional Bounty Hunter. She takes no prisoners and oft her thinking of the “dead or alive” is Dead. She is accompanied by her sidekick Sinetro who is basically indestructible. Killing him, makes him stronger when he awakens. Shooting off a body part, causes regeneration of both parts, in effect creating a new one. Melinoe herself will often shoot Sinetro to create an army of him. She has almost unlimited strength and can teleport herself anywhere, she also uses telepathy and telekinesis. The only way to stop her is to destroy each of the skulls from where her powers originate, sending her back to her dimension. Each of her weapons will send her bounty back to her dimension. Because of her power to travel to other dimensions, she can also use it to bring or send others to her dimension or any dimension she has been to.

Coming from another dimension also, Hebi has an indestructible body, his weakness is his tails. It is the only place that can be injured, but careful…cutting one off, results in another one of him, with more tails. If the tails keep getting cut off, they can end up overwhelming the world. Hebi, alas, is not very intelligent and can be tricked into going back into his own dimension. I’m sworn to secrecy, so I can’t say how.

Thanks! It’s the same lightning item. I just stretched it out really long vertically and squished it really short horizontally. The part you see is basically just that center bit of the lightning where there isn’t much branching out. And most of the bits of lightning that do branch out are either off screen or hidden behind the character.

I feel it as an unthinking entity, with the same spirit of most animals: eat, fight back when attacked. the problem is, it creates high perturbations in the reality around him when moving, because he is on multiple parrallel worlds at the same time. also, it automatically absorbs electric energy and throws it back at random.

Samael, The Angel of Ruin: He is the herald of the apocalypse. Samael wields The Blade of Oblivion: a sword who’s blade is made of pure darkness. A blade so strong that only his right arm forged from damned souls can wield it without being destroyed. The weapon is both indestructible and capable of cutting through almost anything. He himself is nigh-on immortal/indestructible. Finally, Samael is in possession of The Gaze of Judgement. When he activates this power, Samael causes anything he casts his eyes upon to be consumed by the flames of destruction.

One of the most famous techniques of how to create a sense of suspense and fear in a film, is to use a point-of-view shot and a reaction shot. The point-of-view shot is very self-explained. The audience views events through someone’s (or something’s) eyes. The reaction shot works like a mirror. Instead of seeing the actual object, the viewer sees the reaction of the people in the film, who are seeing the object. From the expressions on their faces – be it awe, be it disgust, be it horror – the audience learns something about the unseen subject.
I have used this concept for my Big Bad. Instead of actually seeing it, you see a menacing shadow and the defeated hero, who is pleading for his life. The title of this entry is “Overshadowed”

The Prophet
He isn’t strictly evil. Misguided would probably be a better word. He is under the belief that the kami (Shinto gods) wish for none but themselves to have supernatural powers. The Prophet has been gifted (though no one knows how) with immense “divine” energy. Though he is only human, he can fairly casually throw around divine blasts that make a lightning bolt seem like one of those novelty hand buzzers. Because of his belief that he is doing the will of the kami, The Prophet seeks out anyone with superpowers, be they hero, villain, or other, and kills them with his immense power.

Awesome contest with some really impressive big bads. I just have to throw my hat into the ring on this one. I started out using HM for rpg character design and eventually moved to making cool enemies too. I enjoyed making this one for the contest so much that he just became my current campaign’s primary enemy.
Normally slow to act and methodical in his machinations, the arch-devil Asmodeus now sits before you. Over twice the height of your tallest companion, he exudes menace and power. Countless have come before him on his throne and all have fallen… you will be no different.
He stands, blocking out the almost the entirety of his throne. Wielding a sword as tall as you and bearing a shield nearly a foot thick with ease, he takes a ready stance. As the burning hellscape on which you stand erupts behind your unbeatable foe, he looks at you… through your eyes… piercing your soul… and you hear words of dread you know to be true.
“Now, you die.”

Just a reminder to look at your links and make sure that you have named your files correctly. For instance Blaq Aries has the character name but does not include “blaq aries” in the file name.
Rule of thumb: If you right click on your image to save to your hard drive and the file name does not contain your handle then it is named incorrectly.
