Patriot Contest Finalists

I'm happy to announce the ten finalists for the Patriot Contest, the winner of which receives a free custom color character illustration by yours truly. There were some great entries, I want to thank everyone who participated.

In no particular order, the finalists are:

Vote for your favorite! The winner will be the entry that gets the most votes by Tuesday morning, October 7, so vote early and vote often. I've reset the polling to allow you to vote once per day, and don't be shy about sending out notices to your friends and families to come and vote for yours if you like. What's more American than stuffing the ballot box, after all?!

Good luck to all ten finalists, and thanks again for all the great entries everyone!

Patriotism means feedback

I'm going to announce the finalists for the Patriot Contest later today, but I wanted to give people a few hours to look at the submissions and leave feedback here regarding any standouts they see. So head on over to the PhotoBucket slideshow, and let me know which one(s) you think should make the finals.

Mini figure

I spent a big chunk of the weekend working on the template for the upcoming HM Mini, and wanted to get your thoughts on it:

At this point I'm thinking the entire head will be one slot, consisting of the outline of the skull, the jawline, and the chin. Hair, facial hair, and the face would be separate slots as well inside the head slot. This means that when you scale (resize) or move the head, the face and beard will transform right along with it.

The hands also will probably be their own separate slot. That hasn't gotten a lot of traction in HM2.5, but I think partly that's because it was an add-on rather than being a core part of the program from the beginning. I really think having the ability to change out the way they're posed will help make the figures more distinctive.

Flash now lets you dynamically declare one movie clip (which is what the "slots" are) as a mask for another. So what I'll probably do is have one slot for "Hand-held items" with a drop-down box for you to choose another slot to mask it out with or not. That way if there's a cool sword you like, for instance, you could either drag it over the belt to make it look sheathed behind a sash, or you could drag it over to a hand and mask it so it looks like it's being held, or you could drag it over to the back and mask it out with the body so it looks like it's in a back sheath.

The difference between corporate and creative

This week's pile o' randomness was an interesting batch of butt-kicking, living-island-of-Japan, Robot Fighting madness. It started out with this rather disturbing Barry Windsor-Smith cover illustration of X-O Manowar #5, and I challenge you to tell me just what that ... um ... "doo-hickey" is on his left pectoral:

All I'm saying is, I sure hope it doesn't end up sliding further down as the suit finishes forming, ifyouknowhatimean.

Anyway, this batch of random comics was full of contrasting styles and imperatives which I'll go into after the jump.

Poll Position: Heredity bites

Having your own super-powers would be a neat challenge, but would you willingly impose them on your child? That's the heart of this week's Poll Position:

{democracy:49}

The way I see it, you have two sets of consideration here. First, what effect would having those powers from a young age have on a youngster? And second, how would their abilities affect your ability to parent them effectively while they are growing up? Looking at them one-by-one:

  1. Flash: I think this set of powers presents the fewest disadvantages in terms of childhood development and parenting. Granted, they could more easily run away from home, but if you're at the point where your kid's fleeing your house, you probably have bigger problems than speed. However, the super-fast metabolism also requires huge amounts of food, which would be darn difficult to keep up with.
  2. Human Torch: I've had nephews who almost burned their houses down playing with matches, I shudder to think what a five year old who can hurl fireballs would be like.
  3. Professor Xavier: On the one hand, I think being a child with instant access to the most intimate thoughts of everyone around you would hopelessly warp you. On the other hand, it's possible that knowing everyone else that fully would make you much warmer and stronger and more confident since there could be no lies where you're concerned. But I don't think I could in good conscience take that risk with my son or daughter.
  4. Spider-Man: Most of Peter Parker's problems stem not from his powers but from other factors in his life, so as a "naked" power set this one is pretty attractive. However you almost have to live in a city with tall buildings for Spider-Man to be the most effective -- if you have nothing to swing from, travel gets problematic, and what good is it crawling the walls at Walgreen's, you know?
  5. Superman: How do you parent a god? What if your kid turns out to be a bad apple, as they sometimes do, and you've given them the ability to kill everyone on the planet without breaking a sweat? Having Superman's powers yourself is one thing, giving them to someone else is something else entirely.

So having thought through all that, I think I'd probably choose Spider-Man. He's strong, can avoid trouble, is quick, and couldn't do mass harm if he turned out badly.
