Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Spoiler-Free Review

Hey everyone! Well, we’re back to movies again in time for the new offering from Marvel. As I said in my Sabaton concert review, we needed a break so we didn’t go to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 opening weekend, but we’ve seen it now so let’s talk about it. As usual, things are spoiler-free! Let’s get to it!

Caption Contest #94

Ok guys, time for another caption contest, where you have to come with the funniest replacement dialogue for a random comic panel of my choosing. This week you have to replace the dialogue for this panel:

Everyone can have a maximum of 3 entries, entries must be in by next Wednesday (April 24th) and All Entries Must Be PG-13.

Character Design Challenge #322 – The International Legion for Justice: Phase 6.

Major Patriot became aware of Vasily Kuznetsov in late 1942. Born in the Russian town of Uzlovaya to a chemist father and physicist mother, Vasily’s mutation was hidden by his family who feared for his safety. Vasily could sprout gold metallic wings at will and fly at astounding speeds. In 1943 he was recruited by Major Patriot into the ILJ at the age of 16 and adopted the moniker Imperial Eagle

Your challenge this week is to design Imperial Eagle’s ILJ uniform.

Rules for posts, contests, and challenges: Original characters only, no copyrighted characters, no characters based on copyrighted characters, no characters based on RPG’s or other games. The characters must be your own design and not based on any character that might be copyrighted in any way. I have the right to delete any post that I believe crosses this line without warning. Only post characters that you have either created for this contest specifically or you know for certain have never been entered to a contest before. If you aren’t certain, don’t enter it, because I’m not going to go back through all of the contests and check.

All entries must be in JPG or PNG form (BMPs are too big), posted to a publicly accessible website (like the HeroMachine :,ImageShackPhotoBucket, or whatever);

  • Entries must be made as a comment or comments to this post, containing a link directly to the image and the character name;
  • Please name your filesas [your name]-[character name].[file extension] before you upload it. So DiCicatriz, for instance, would save his “Bayou Belle” character image as DiCicatriz-BayouBelle.png.

Please make the link go directly to the image (like this) and not to a hosting jump page (like this).

This contest will close on Sunday, May 21st at 9:00am Eastern.

Concert Review!

It's called The Last Tour because the album is called The Last Stand. There were some questions about the name when the tour was first announced.

Hey, everyone! You know how in my last post I said that we’d gone out of town last week for a couple of days and that I was going to write about it? Well, here it is (finally!), my first concert review! And not just any concert, this was our first time seeing family-favorite Sabaton! I’ve been to a number of concerts in my time, from small gigs in bars or at university to big ones outside or at large venues but I’ve never written a proper review for one, so bear with me as I try this out. So let’s see how it goes. Oh, and all the pictures I'm posting were taken by us that day.

Anime Talk – WorldEnd: What Will You Do At The End Of The World? Are You Busy? Will You Save Us? – Mid-Season Review.

Welcome everyone to the first Anime Talk I have written in a long time! I want to start off this edition by saying I will be making some changes to my review style. In the past I tried to write as if I were some "professional anime reviewer" and lets face it I'm not! I am just a simple  anime fan and a very so so writer. So now my reviews will be far more casual, like I was talking to a buddy about the show I just watched. I'll leave the more elegant writing in the hands of our other much more capable moderators and blog authors!  So with that said let's get into my review.

What Were They Thinking?: It’s a bit Odd, y’see

You know, here on What Were They Thinking? (the place where we take a look at all of the stupidest, most ill-advised things in the history of comics), there are some storylines that we cover that are generally good ideas let down by stupid descisions, like including a rape and a suicide and victim blaming in West Coast Avengers: Lost In Space and Time, or the backstage feuds that cause the Hobgoblin saga to go off the rails. Other times there are storylines that are just terrible because the people involved couldn't do any better, such as the Image Babwatch crossover. And of course there are those times that see creators who appear to have near limitless talent (like Chris Claremount or Frank Miller) just go mental, and you end up with Whom Gods Destroy or Holy Terror. And then you have this:

Kaldath’s Corner: Injustice 2 Mobile Game Drops today!

Breaking News: Deadpool Set For Adult Oriented Animated Series

Marvel have just announced on their news feed that FXX (the 21st Century Fox owned network) are set to make an action-comedy animated series starring the Merc With The Mouth aimed at adult audiences. Both Marvel Studios and ABC are working on the series alongside 21st Century Fox with Jeph Loeb and Donald GLover working as Executive Producer and showrunner espectively. 10 episodes have been ordered with no release date given as yet.

So, Deadpool doing adult oriented action-comedy animation. I'm hoping it's gonna be kinda like Archer but even more irreverant and with more Chimichanga's. That would be nice.

Caption Contest #93 Results

Ok guys, last week I asked you all to come up with the best replacement caption for this panel:

And here are our top 5 entries:

AMS: And the Marvel Studios/ Fox Studios negotiations continue...

Calvary Red: Never tell a Firefly fan you work for Fox

Calvary Red: Cyclops learned the hard way, not to spoil Guardians of the Galaxy 2 on Facebook.

Calvary Red: Next week, on What Were They Thinking...

Guy Genesis: This was the day Cyclops, and everyone else for that matter, learnt the consequences of touching Captain America’s rare doll collection.

But of course, there can only be one winner right, and I wonder who it could be...

Our winner is...

Character Design Challenge #321 – The Doctor Will See You Now

Your challenge this week is to use HeroMachine to create one of the animal/human hybrids known as the Beast Folk from The Island of Doctor Moreau. I have included a list below for reference.

  • Edward Prendick– The narrator and protagonist.
  • Moreau– A vivisectionist who has fled upon his experiments being exposed and has moved to a remote island in the Pacific to pursue his research of perfecting his Beast Folk.
  • Montgomery– Dr. Moreau's assistant and Prendick's rescuer. A medical doctor who enjoyed a measure of happiness in England. An alcoholic who feels some sympathy for the Beast Folk.
  • Beast Folk– Animals which Moreau has experimented upon, giving them human traits via vivisection for which the surgery is extremely painful. They include:
