Kaldath’s Corner: Share Your Music

On this edition of Kaldath's Corner I am reviving the old sharing day posts. This is something that Jeff used to do when he ran the blog, the idea here is to get to know the community a little better. I am not sure if this will be a regular thing or just a one and done type of experience, we will just have to wait and see.

What we are going to do here is I am going to share with you some of my favorite music and then in the comments below I want you to share a piece of music you enjoy listening to. In addition if you share some of your musically interests with us then you can ask me one question on any topic of your desire and I will endeavor to answer honestly if I am able too. So let us being!

My music tastes are a lot broader than any list of my favourite bands will really ever show, my favourite album is Born To Run by Bruce Springsteen and I have albums and songs by people as diverse as Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson and Slipknot, plus music from soundtracks of films, cartoons and anime that I like as well as various vocalic songs. But as the question was about favourite bands, here we go:
    5. Alexisonfire
song- This Could Be Anywhere In The World (Crisis, 2006)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PPcds3jOhRQ

    4. Funeral For A Friend
Song- Juneau (Casually Dressed And Deep In Conversation, 2003)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_dmHRi0RE8
Note: These guys used to be higher, but they inexplicably decided that after their fourth album, they were going to progressively get worse, which is unfortunate.

    3. Bring Me The Horizon
Song- Throne (That’s The Spirit, 2015)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ow_qI_F2ZJI

    1- Biffy Clyro
Song- Victory Over The Sun (Opposites, 2013)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mR9HdYx4U2E

    1- Thursday
Song- Cross Out The Eyes (Full Collapse, 2001)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6zlnil-v3dg

Yeah, can’t decide who my favourite band is. Technically, as Thursday are on hiatus, Biffy Clyro would count I suppose.

As for a question, how about, if you could meet anyone in real-life face to face, who would it be and what would you say to them/ ask them?

  2. Malfar says:

Oh, I love music posts. Finding some cool music and sharing the music that I like. That’s cool. I liked this Babymetal song.
Now it’s time for my current top-5 now. I like songs in many languages, but this one will be mostly in Russian, so if you don’t like Russian language, just consider number 5 and don’t go further.

    Number 5
Fumihiku Tachiki – the song “Red Dog Red”, which is sort of a soundtrack to one of my favorite animes – One Piece. It is not used in anime, but it was created as a “Character song” for the Nippon Judan, a disc with forty-something songs by One Piece characters/voice actors (one song for each Japan province).
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_32pGdsvWw

    Number 4
Король и Шут – Мушкетёры (The King and the Jester/Korol i Shut – the song “Musketeers”). Well, what else to add? The song of Three Musketeers. It is funny and action-packed.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zd9B4DlHUrs

    Number 3
Kosmodromm – the song “Музыка Ночи” (Music of the night). This song is much calmer. Most of the songs of this band have some “atomic” theme/motif. This one doesn’t, but it’s in the same mood.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MAAYA51VBbk

    Number 2
Канцлер Ги – Барон Самди (Chancellor Gui – the song “Samedi”). A calm and charming song about voodoo cult’s top deity, Baron Samedi. Video has footage from “Hannibal” tv show, sorry for that but I couldn’t find a clear concert video or a video with just the sound.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X88Be-ilEk8

    Number 1
Valeriy Meladze – the song “Stranger”. Beautiful song. Nice video, too. Meladze was my favourite singer before I discovered Folk, Metal and most of my other favourite artists, and I am his fan even now.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1v0nzSPDjkc

Now the question part. For each guy and gal here different things call forth the nostalgic feelings. For me it’s the song “In the shadows” by Rasmus because it often sounded in small shop which I was visiting when I was a kid. It was a small and cozy shop with the cartriges for Sega Genesis/Mega Drive and constant “Uh-oh, uh-oh, uh-oh, uh-ooooh in the shadooooows” from the speakers. What calls the nostalgic feelings for you? Sorry if this question was asked some weeks/months/years before.

  3. Herr D says:

Major compatibility problems prevent me from sharing what I listen to directly . . .
My first eight cassette tapes (yes) were “Future Shock” by Herbie Hancock (includes Rock It) “Bach’s Toccata & Fugue in D Minor Und Anderes Orgelwerke,” Floyd Cramer’s Piano Masterpieces 1900-1972, Janet Jackson’s “Control,” INXS “Listen Like Thieves,” Stray Cats “Stray Cat Strut,” Tone Loc’s debut album whose name escapes me, and a bootleg copy of Willio and Phillio’s “Vacuum Cleaner Hoses.”

The only record I managed to keep from harm for more than two years was the cylinder-style copy of a Mashie Jam session. Just 2:15 or so, but some of the best early orchestrated jazz scat I’ve ever heard. Can’t get that back again–no players, and no one makes those cylinders anymore.

CDs? Queen’s Greatest Hits {Highlander soundtrack, mostly) Trafidlo’s Old Dog, New Tracks

Most of the time, though, the squidlings are watching cartoons or multitasking makes listening impossible, so I don’t get much listening time. I have a rather eclectic collection.

  4. ams says:

Music is a picture in time and this is what my mind looks like right now.

TOOL – Right in two https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fj-10lIrboM

    Metric – Gimme Sypathy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jq3-wZs64n4

    Foo Fighters – Congregation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZHtZrfFuhU

Queens Of The Stone Age – Kalopsia https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Slk-Zo5mGVw

RUSH (live) mix from previous show that has all my faves – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ld0bFyyOrbc

    Cheers!

@ JR19759 – Alexisonfire tune is one I had forgotten. Thanks for bring it back.

  5. Kaldath says:

@JR, After giving this some thought I have decided that the People I would like to meet most is the Band Scandal, Especially Tomomi ( The Base player with the voice of an Anime character!! ) I’d tell them how amazing I find their music even though I only understand a very small smattering of Japanese, and I’d tell Tomomi that watching her play bass has actually ignited a bit of a desire to learn that instrument myself!

@Malfar, I would have to say the Song Surrender by Trixter ( Yes the band was actually named after the Flash supervillian )> It is a song that I played for my first girlfriend after we had our first major argument as a way of making up with her. Now every time I hear the song playing I think of her because even thought we didn’t work out in the end she was my first real love and a small part of me continues to love her til this day.

  6. melmo44 says:

Wow, other than the top three, it’s hard to pick favorite bands. It depends so much on my mood. Some days it’s Savage Garden and Roxette, other days it’s Pantera and Disturbed. But I’ve figured out a top 5.

    5. Rammstein- Reise, Reise. After flirting with the genre for a long time, this is the song that converted me fully to metal. Listening to it obscenely loud in my ex’s car was incredible. They are also fantastic live, and it was one of the best shows I’ve ever been to.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QY3lRgh9xU0

    4. Van Canto- The Last Night of the Kings. A Capella power metal? Surprisingly awesome. They’ve done a lot of covers, but also some really amazing original songs. This is one of them (I’m also partial to If I Die in Battle, but this one just edges it out).
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rt4CQc1MSso

    3. Judas Priest- Touch of Evil. How do you pick a favorite Priest song? You can’t. Okay, well I can’t. I can find a Judas Priest song for any mood, any occasion. We saw them in concert for the second time recently, and they truly are metal gods.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PW-6FKFnHx8

    2. Sabaton- Cliffs of Gallipoli. Started listening to them after hearing the Van Canto cover one of their songs. Military history and heavy metal. My life is made. Even my kids are huge fans, and it inspired my oldest to dress as a WWII soldier for Halloween this year.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOCe2Y7iVF8

    1. Def Leppard- Paper Sun. One of my favorite albums as a kid was a copy of Pyromania ‘borrowed’ from my mum that had been taped from vinyl to cassette, and I still love them (I basically live in my Def Leppard hoodie if I’m not at work). They were my first concert (took my mum!), and saw them for the third time this spring and they are as awesome as ever.

  7. dblade says:

Very cool. I was a metalhead of the 80s so I really can relate to some of these bands mentioned. I look forward to exploring some of these others that I am unfamiliar with (all of JR19759’s selections). If I have time I will share as well.

  8. JR19759 says:

@AMS- It’s a great song. I just wish the guys who wrote it would actually properly bring themselves back. Also, loving the Tool, Foo’s and Rush (my Dad’s favourite band, make you feel old much?) picks. Though isn’t it illegal not to like Rush in Canada? So it’s a bit of an academic pick surely 😉
@Herr D- At least you comply with the law that says that every household shall have at least one copy of Queen’s Greatest Hits then. And anyone who says they don’t like Queen, this is my response-
    http://pre05.deviantart.net/29ad/th/pre/f/2015/319/1/d/tin___queen_by_timsplosion-d9gsmpi.jpg
@Melmo44- Rammstein were the band that got you into metal? Wow, you got in at the deep end didn’t you. And stating that they’re fantastic live is a bit like saying the sun is a bit bright. Only the sun has less giant inflatable male parts and bath-tub crowd surfing.
@Tool- I’d be surprised if most people on this sight had heard of more than one or two of my picks. That’s the thing with growing up in the U.K and having my main music discovery period in the mid to late- 00’s. I’m 20 years later than everyone else who’s commented so far, pretty much.

  9. GuyGenesis says:

If JR’s 20 yrs late to this party, then I guess I’m 20 (or 30) years early. The 50s & 60s is pretty much where I find musical bliss. I always felt out of place when this question came up, and to think all along a simple trip through time was all I lacked to still feel out of place 😉

Favorite Band – The Animals (House of the Rising Sun/Please Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood)
Favorite Song – The Charlie Daniels Band (The Devil Went Down To Georgia)

Marty Robbins; Master’s Call is a favorite, but pretty much anything by this man or the others: -Johnny Horton(Whispering Pines), Bobby Bare(500 Miles Away From Home/Marie Laveau), Charley Pride(Kaw-liga) and I could go on.
-Sam Cook, Del Shannon(Runaway), Dion and the Belmonts, Fats Domino(Blueberry Hill/Let me Walk you Home) and so on
-The Clovers, Platters, Diamonds, Herman’s Hermits(No Milk Today), etc.
    -Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin…
    and the list goes on.
Henson Cargil(Skip Rope), Johnny Preston(Running Bear). Conway Twitty(Lonely Blue Boy), Elvis Presley(Return to Sender), Simon and Garfunkel(Hello Darkness my old friend), Zager and Evans(In the year 2525)

I would say I have a wide variety of taste in music, it’s just confined to basically those two decades.

  10. Wild Card says:

First of all don’t see how y’all manage to narrow down your choices to only five. It took me awhile to get down as few I got.

Being from the South I naturally grew up with this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QxIWDmmqZzY
Another Southern brand I grew up with is Molly Hatchet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxBzUZ1q7Vw
Also on the likes of Ted Nugent: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCJux_7W2i8
Kiss (BTW: Burt Sugarman’s “Midnight Special” was a late night music show on NBC (Pre MTV) and the only reason I would sit thru Johnny Cason’s Tonite Show (I still don’t late night talk shows).) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5ZxJ5jJG-g
    Van Halen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wHXbi1bC9T4
And my all time favorite Aerosmith: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1SLVrd-TDZw

And when I reach High School Def Leppard started to get big (with some help From MTV) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NfQxiPDLkRQ
Also started to get into some of the harder stuff like Ronnie James Dio: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WapvE4pRqic

Maybe I should skip the history and onto some my favorites.
Fave Show tune “Time Warp” from The Rocky Horror Picture Show: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkplPbd2f60
Fave Tribute Heartbreaker (At The Enad of Lonely Street) by Dread Zeppelin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rAM1MKi7bNU
fave anime theme in past five years Crowds (Gotchaman Crowds theme) by White Ash: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lfk8sqQ-qEI
Fave cover Phantom of the Opera by Nightwish: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sw1jI0Hh0Ms
Band I discovered because of You Tube, Therion: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YY-EOYJQMMY
Cover you got to hear to believe, just about anything from Hayseed Dixie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sAWl5peI8HY
Fave song about a comic book character, I am the Law by Anthrax: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCdsO1mBGE4

I could go on and on but I’m stop for now.
