Open Critque Day #15

Why am I always late with this??

As for how this goes, you post a work of yours, finished or WIP (aka work in process, for those who are new to abbreviations), and then others give you critiques on your work.  I do not mind if you post the occasional non-HM picture or piece of writing. Just make sure that you only post pictures that are your own design and not any that copyrighted or based off of copyrighted characters.

Also, if you post a work, it is highly recommended that you also give someone else a critique.

What you need to do is schedule your post. Above the Publish button on the new post page there should be a bit that says Publish Immediately EDIT. Click on EDIT and you can change when your post will publish. I always do mine the day before, unless I get inspired (then it’ll be earlier) or something gets in the way.
Anyway… I’ve been trying to do this one for a good few weeks now, but I just can’t get it to look right. I was inspired by Gurren Lagann and this comic I found on DeviantArt (which I’ll also link). I’m trying to get it to look sort of like the third panel of the comic, but I’ve got stuck, so any input would be very welcome.

If anyone else wants to have a go at it, I’ll post the text on my forum thread.

@JR: Actually, I’ve already known about how to schedule a post. My problem is that I keep on forgetting to even write the post on either Wednesday or Thursday.
And going back to critiquing, that looks really good, though his expression doesn’t really seem quite right to me. I would probably narrow his eyes just a tiny bit, and maybe change his mouth.
    (Also, Wally for the win)

Are you stuck because it doesn’t look enough like your inspiration, or are you stuck because it doesn’t look like you want it to? This guy looks more like he was stunned by a hammerfist style blow to the nose and is trying to keep from going cross-eyed. Tears would be next if that’s right. Some near-translucent overlays in white might work.

If it’s something else, I might have a different opinion and/or advice. Are PM’s coming back?

  4. JR19759 says:

@Linea24- What would you suggest I do for the mouth? Do you reckon I should make it from scratch out of insignia’s? Also, Wally’s best rival.
@Herr D- I’m stuck because it doesn’t look exactly like I want it to. I’m not at all happy with the lighting (which is why I included the reference picture, because that’s the sort of lighting I was going for) and I’m not sure about the shadow work on the face, and yeah, the nose is horrible, but I don’t know how to get it to look right whilst staying “in style” as it were. And what do you mean when you say “near-translucent overlays in white” exactly, what items would I use and where would I be putting them? As for if the PM’s are coming back, you’d have to ask Ben.

@JR: I would recommend you try one the mouths I included in the link first before trying to build one from scratch ( If you’re trying to go for a mid-yell look, that is.

  6. Worf says:

@JR: Have a look if this is in line with what you want:
    JR Head

and if so, here is the text file:
    JR Head Text File

  7. JR19759 says:

@Worf- Yeah, the shadow work you’ve got is definitely more what I was looking for. That’ll help a lot, cheers.

  8. Worf says:

@JR: Happy to help mate. Let me know how it turns out.

  9. Lef says:
Well this is the third of the Projects…. Apart from shading i really have no idea what the powers of hades will be….. I thought something like teleportation or turning into smoke or something but i dont know how to make that visible in the character…… Thanks in advance 😉

  10. Linea24 says:

@Lef: Maybe you could add smoke effects or the like to his head or shoulders?

  11. Herr D says:

@Lef: Teleportation kind of requires multiple panels or other characters’ reactions to a same-room teleport.

@JR: Best overlays for tears forming are usually arcs like the insignia/tech crescent or something less regular-shaped tweaked ahd masked sideways to the lower part of the eye to look like a lopsided water meniscus. I like multiple scattered differing layers of solid white at 2 – 5 percent for a filmy sort of look.
