Open Critique Day #H7

I'm going with an open critique day today. I am going to move the "Color My Character/ Strike a Pose" challenges to Fridays and I'm bring back Open Critique Day to Thursdays and will have a weekend Open Critique day on Sundays. After very little participation for in "Kids Korner" I am going to take it off of my weekly program.

I liked to look at Kids Korner stuff, but as I got no kids, I had no reason to participate… But OCDs are always on my list of interest.

After seeing some great cover illustrations done with HM, I decided to try and make one for Sandokan set. It is still very much WIP, lacking details on the face and so forth. I’m mostly interested in opinions if the design and posing are working, and if or if not I should add some kind of decorative element that would separate black and blue background elements.

For once, a regular person! Quinn Flynn is a fairly successful artist who likes to spending time helping street children.

  4. Dionne Jinn says:

By the way, Hammerknight, you haven’t thought about starting to number the OCDs like Jeff used to do?

Very Excellent piece of art!! The only thing I would change is to adjust the sleeve on the woman’s upraised arm. It just looks to narrow to me, I’d make it wider bringing it down to about a 1/4 of the way down from the top of her breasts.

No I have not thought about numbering them, would it help everyone if I did?

  7. Keric says:

Hammerknight: No I have not thought about numbering them, would it help everyone if I did?

It is a system of organization, would it help? Perhaps if you had to search for something posted in the OCD’s, if not-you really would not care!

I can go back and number them.

  9. Keric says:

Btw re last weeks Q: Ranged attacks, I did not think about them when I made the illo, I was thinking I could give a shuck and jive answer, like they all could or Cy could, but I just didn’t think of it.

  10. Arioch says:

Not satisfied with this one, but I dunno why.
For the record, she is supposed to feature the 2 keys holding the fur cloak, and the wolf. The rest is up for grabs.

I have posted this character on several critiques and I dont think anyone has said anything about it yet and I havent made anything new ish lately so I will repost again in the hopes of getting some feed back.

I’m wondering about a more clever title referencing “American Gothic,” a source of inspiration.

@Keric: If you want it simple, have Cy holding a rock for a Fezzic impersonation. (Princess Bride)
@Tool: Love that mask. Good blood effect on blade. Where’s his sheath?
@Arioch: I’m guessing it would be better to have the keys completely on top of the cloak, try to place a ‘pin and finding’ right behind them, then put the wolf on top of everything and play with the translucency.

  14. Herr D says:

@Kicktar: hmmm. She does look like a regular person. Simple understated virtue is hard to depict. Do you have plans for her in an action scene?
@Dionne Jinn: Very nice with the water around the ship. Wakes are next? As for the separation, you might try just rimming the round with another color, trying several. If you do more you might get stuck doing a frame, etc, and then your background might take over–but yes, a rim might improve it.
@Hammerknight: I do like the OCD’s numbered. I miss enough of them and have such an erratic schedule that it is sometimes a big help to me.

  15. Herr D says:

@Guy: Like the look–is it a costume / environment suit? Or a droid?

Ah yes he could of used a sheath I guess, Thanks by the way.

I would suggest changing his hold on both his weapons. The sai could use being angled slightly downwards instead of upwards and the katanta could be moved so that his hand is closer to the hilt. The hands are in an odd position that I don’t think it’s actually possible for a human to do without breaking both wrists, so you could either change the hands so they are palms out, or change the arms to the default arms. Either way it will clean up the problem.
    Hope this helps.

Hopefully this still makes the Open Critique Day. I’d like to show you (partly share the joy of, partly ask for critique on) the following cards I made using HeroMachine. They are for a game which i may or may not ever see complete (or even then, probably just for fun between me and my geeky friends) but which, for the time being, serves me very well in clarifying the story universe they’re from and some of their interactions. I’ve credited Jeff’s HeroMachine everywhere, so i don’t feel there’s any misuse of the program, but if Jeff or HK or any other officers of HeroMachine sees any infringement, don’t hesitate to let me know and i’ll pull them off DeviantArt.
But meanwhile, without further ado, here they are:

No you were okay to post it. Because there were so many links to other pages in your post it went to moderation, and I had to approve it. The problem is this happens sometimes when I am sleeping and I don’t get to it until the morning. As long as you don’t make copyrighted characters, Jeff for the most part is okay with you using HM. I have asked to do so in the past for some project that I have done. Just remember to give credit where credit is do.

  23. Ximero says:

Awesome, many thanks, HK. I will stay right clear of anything copyrighted and will sing duly high praises to HM everywhere i go 🙂

  24. Arioch says:

    Herr D: Thanks!

Harlequin: Holy sh*t! I’m sorry, I just can’t help you on this, this is waaaay beyond my skill. I usually don’t like your faces, but these are great!

  25. Kicktar says:

Herr D: I’ll probably rely on the other characters for any fighting, considering they have cybernetics and super-powers.

  26. Nick Hentschel says:

P.S. Sorry about the poor response to Kids’ Korner, Hammerknight: I tried to contribute as much as I could. (I was always a lousy salesman.)

  27. Hammerknight says:

That’s okay Nick it might not be gone forever.

  28. Herr D says:

@Ximero: I’m no knowledge of that sort of card game, but they look interesting, and I LOVE your captions.

    These look great!

The only complaint I might have is the wall of text. It is practical, but not very aesthetic. And since it looks quite complicated, it does rebut me from the game. You might be better of with simply the name of the ability and its cost, or fewer abilities.

  30. Ximero says:

@ Herr D: Many thanks for liking the captions (I guess you mean the “flavour text” at the bottom, right?), i’m rather partial to them myself as i always put some thought into them, to make them both very relevant to the Character and pretty funny (though not everyone likes a “terrible” pun 😀 )

@ Arioch: Thank you! Yes, i do know what you mean about the wall of text, but that’s kinda what happens when thorough turns into OCD – it’s the kind of game that can be easily picked up as you play especially if you’ve checked the rules and terminology beforehand (and if you keep checking those bold effect words as you go). That said, though, I also mostly just browsed through the D&D manuals for the monster pics 🙁 so i do know the wall of text is daunting at first. BUT it’s a very detailed game? AND it’s not just battling it out via teams of creatures, but making those creatures move around, equipping buildings and landscapes on the battlefield, managing energy costs and attack/defence probabilities (dice) & even a bit of energy farming… exactly why i don’t ever think it would be very commercially successful 😀 but oh well, i enjoy it 🙂

  31. Ximero says:

…unless of course it were a PC/browser game and then all those choices would be a bit faster/clearer (e.g. highlighted tiles showing where you can move a Character or how far a selected attack would reach, etc.) – but many others have beaten me to that punch (including our friends at SODWA), nor am i personally very programming-gifted, so what can ya do 🙂

  32. TOOL says:

I know I already posted something on here this go round but I was feeling like making something a little different from my norm and wanted to see what you guys thought?
